6,358 players entered the World Series of Poker Main Event this year. It ended with a heads-up battle between Jerry Yang from USA and Tuan Lam from Canada.
Yang had a big chip lead with $104 chips against Lam's $24 million when the heads-up play begun. The chip leader Yang took a firm grip of the match from the start, playing hyper-aggressively, forcing the tight Lam to play defensively. After 36 hands it was all over.
Yang opened with a $1.5 million raise, Lam quickly declared himself all-in and was immediately called by Yang. Lam held Ad-Qd and Yang pocket eights. The flop came Qc-9c-5s and things looked bright for Lam holding top pair. The turn was 7d, giving Yang a few extra outs. The river card was 6h filling Yang's inside straight, giving him the victory.
Jerry Yang is the new World Champion of poker, winning over $8.2 million. Tuan Lam gets $4.8 for second place and the South African Raymond Rahme gets $3.0 million for his third place finish.
Jerry Yang is a 39 year old psychologist that will share his winnings with his wife and six children and he has also promised to give 10% to charity.
