A Beginner's Guide To Online Roulette

Thursday, Apr 16, 2009 | By CasinoGuide

Online roulette is definitely a fun way to try your luck at an Internet casino. If you're going to take a shot at the spinning wheel, don't go in blind.

You can take a few easy steps to improve your chances of winning at roulette. Read on to find out what they are.

The Martingale System

The Martingale system is not one of these things. This is the concept of doubling your bet every time you lose an even-money bet like black/red or odd/even. The idea is that with a 50/50 proposition, you'll have to come out ahead eventually.

The fallacy involves the law of large numbers. Although over time you will certainly see a roughly even number of reds and blacks, there is nothing in the short term prohibiting five, 10 or even 20 blacks in a row.

If you're betting red all the way and doubling each loss, this means it is a very short time before an astronomical sum is required to double your bet. Stick with straight betting strategies, or press your bets when you are winning, not losing.

Wheel Selection

One thing that can definitely improve your results is good wheel selection. Look for wheels with only a single "0" space, as opposed to the traditional American roulette wheels that also have a "00."

The zeroes on the wheel provide the House edge, since they are not part of the payout odds. More zeroes mean a greater House edge. Playing with one zero instead of two actually cuts the House edge in half.

Special Rules

Once you've found a single zero wheel, keep your eye out for the "en prison" or "la partage" rules if you like to play even money bets. The former rule states that if you spin a zero on your even money bet, you can get your money back if that bet is a winner on the following spin.

The latter rule, also called surrender, is a similar idea, except you have the choice to simply get half your money back instead of letting it all ride on the next spin.
