Thresholds of Awareness in Online Poker
In a very interesting article, the “Poker Shrink” Dr. Tim Lavalli talks about thresholds in our sensory perception of external stimuli. For example, the point where you start feeling that the stove is getting warm, or noticing that daylight is starting to fade.
This has a natural application to poker. Your sensory threshold decides what signs and tells you’re able to pick up at the table. This holds just as well for online poker.
If you can lower or even reset this threshold, obviously you’ll be a better informed player and – logically – make more money from online poker.
As Dr. Lavalli puts it, “this means that you can detect and utilize more vital information from your opponents by resetting your threshold of awareness.”
The key to resetting your threshold of awareness is to increase your level of attention. The more you pay attention to the game and what happens around the table, the more you’ll perceive.
This may sound obvious enough, but there’s more to it. Studies show that increased attention also increases your ability to remember and use the information later in the game.
So, without any special methods or memory tricks, just by paying really close attention, you will not only increase your level of insight in the ongoing poker game, but also improve your memory.
With this new insight into the poker mind, it’s certainly easier to understand the greatness of Phil Ivey. Have you ever seen a poker player pay attention as hard and tirelessly as he does? No wonder he appears to see the other players’ cards.
Try it, you’ll like it
