When the Elimination Approaches

Once you have gotten passed the pure newbie stage of elimination blackjack, you will notice a number of interesting situations that occur time and time again. One of them is when an elimination hand approaches, you’re the second shortest stack, the shortest stack moves all-in in desperation, loses and busts out - before the elimination hand even started.

There you were, feeling safe and playing minimum bets, having a short-stacked player protecting you from elimination. And all of a sudden you come into the elimination hand being the short stack. Now all the pressure is on you. You must risk all your chips to have any chance of surviving, and even if you win, survival is not guaranteed. The next shortest stack may very well have your stack more than doubled and can play it safe.

So what do you do about it? Well, I guess the answer lies in the end of the previous paragraph. The player who could play the elimination hand safely was not the second shortest stack when the elimination hand approached, but the third shortest. Conclusion: don’t be contented having one player behind you in the field – he or she may bust out at any time, leaving you exposed to immediate elimination.

Playing it safe and letting others take the risks is fine when you’re comfortably positioned in the top layer, but when you risk being affected by other players busting out, it’s probably better to gamble it out, take your chances, create your own fate.

By the way, as another blackjack expert relates, the Ultimate Blackjack Tour is going to Las Vegas. Time to get on the train, if you haven’t already!
