Online Gambling Still Going Strong
You might have thought that the online gambling boom had come to a standstill and that the number of online gamblers was slowly but certainly declining. Actually, it‘s the other way around. Although the growth has certainly been halted by anti-gambling laws and the like, poker rooms and online casinos still enjoy both a healthy influx of newcomers as well as regulars who return to enjoy one of their favorite pastimes.
Sure, many of the smaller operators have been acquired by bigger ones or merged with others, but that’s just the nature of competition. The largest online poker room, PokerStars, reported a new record in December: more than 150,000 simultaneous visitors. Now that’s impressive, and ironically in a time when the future of online gambling has come into question.
The yearly WSOP craze is a good indicator of the overall popularity of online poker. Practically all poker rooms arrange satellites to the World Series of Poker and several other big tournaments such as the World Poker Tour and its European equivalent, the EPT. More and more players qualify, or at least want to qualify to the big poker events from home.
It’s about time that politicians and legislators realize that online gambling now is a popular, established form of entertainment, and that problem gambling can only be solved with licensing and regulation instead of bans and censorship. Do you feel the same way, or do you have another opinion? Feel free to comment.
