Playing Baccarat without Mr. Bond
The other day, we were involved in a game of online Baccarat. Baccarat is such a nice, classical card game. The banker may win a little more often than the player, but then again you are free to place your bet on the banker. My bankroll steadily increased thanks to the patented 1-3-2-6 system, but strictly speaking I prefer the stand-off bet; it kind of gives you more value for money. Or higher variance, if you prefer. If you’re one of those variance-hunting nerds out there. Hola compadre.
When you play online Baccarat, what part of our popular culture are you most likely to relate to? Who is your fictional role-model when handling the cards and the checks? Well, obviously the handsome gentleman Mr. Bond – James Bond. The civil-servant and professional murderer who can raise any high stakes, super posh Baccarat game to a larger-than-life experience by his mere presence.
But the time is out of joint. As our excellent blog neighbor points out, nowadays when Bond enters a high-roller casino on the Riviera, in the Middle East or in any other part of the world, no longer does he steer himself and his tail of unearthly female attendants towards the highest-stakes Baccarat tables. He may still be drinking his very dry Martinis, still distributing his even dryer jokes, still bringing down every woman that has a license as international top model, but he doesn’t play Baccarat anymore.
Now James Bond plays poker. Voilà, the mysterious Agent 007, a reed shaken by the wind? Is it possible that even the most self-assured heroes carry within them that hyper-sensitive radar for the trends of the time? Yes, apparently. The urge to comply with the general attitude is that strong. Bond may seduce and kill with more accuracy than any other man alive, but he is not man enough to walk his own path through life.
And thank god for that. Such a super hero would be unbearable. Weakness is what makes us human.
We sure would like to see him back at the Baccarat tables, though.
