Only Slightly Superstitious

Gamblers are a superstitious lot by nature - many of us would definitely not walk under a ladder on the way to the casino, and the thought of breaking a mirror prior to gambling just makes you shudder. Although I normally fancy myself a fairly logical thinker, I can’t help but be amazed at how fortune or misfortune seems to converge into very palpable winning - or losing streaks.

Of course, I know that a perceived losing streak is just another statistical deviation, and that probable outcomes are just that - probable. For instance, a coin-flip can come up heads ten times in a row, however unlikely, and consequently you don’t win every time the dealer has a six in blackjack.

Due to the randomness of gambling, some people will be luckier than others during the course of their lives. Those who win the lottery are one example: they have conquered nearly impossible odds and will by definition count among a few, exceptionally lucky people. So of course luck exists even if it’s no supernatural phenomenon, and you will most likely receive more or less of it.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, I had a rather bad day at the tables yesterday, and today I decided to seek guidance from my horoscope. Gladly, it informed me that today’s planets are set on giving me a second chance (where were the planets yesterday, btw?). In addition, my Chinese horoscope agrees that I have a chance of “increasing my earning potential”. Not bad, but I’m sure good odds and an even better casino bonus can’t hurt my chances, either.
