Unrhythmic Rolling at the Casino

It’s crazy how things can go off when you’re at the casino. Each little coin looks the same when they enter the building, but one or two of them are destined to cause a ringing brouhaha.

Which will typically mark the apex in the life of some lucky gambler.

When money-spinning wheels halt in preferred constellations and formerly impecunious devils go down in an incredulous spin of joy, the improvised dancing cannot be referred to as rhythmic rolling.

We all know that the casino holds an edge against us; otherwise they could not stay in business. We gamble with a negative expectation – when it comes to the money. But this may no longer be true if we look at the so called Utility (cf. Nobel-prized works of Sen and Kahneman.)

Maybe the utility of a quarter is so small to us that it’s worth risking for even a tiny chance at the eight million dollar jackpot? Almost certainly! I know it is to me, I don’t even bend down to pick them up.

I would bend a long way to pick up eight million dollars, though. And it’s not just a question of money. Other values come into the equation as well.

What’s my point here? I just mean that gambling at reasonable stakes isn’t such a bad thing. If you enjoy it! If you don’t fire off the family budget! If you know your Nobel Prize winners.

Pun apart, enjoy your gambling – but always remember this adagio: Don’t roll the dice if you can’t pay the price. (And keep your eye on the sparrow =)
