WSOP – it’s All about the Bracelets
In these days, it’s all about the World Series of Poker. With 55 events, the 2007 WSOP stretches over seven weeks and gathers a huge number of mostly very ambitious poker players.
Sometimes, the superior goal of everybody seems to be the ‘coveted golden bracelets’. But this picture is not quite accurate; for many players, the money is just as important as the bracelets. Or even more important.
Or even much more important, as for Tony Korfman, second-place finisher in the Seniors No-Limit Holdem event. In an interview for Poker Listings, he comments on the bracelet question in a fine, cutting way:
- Doesn’t a WSOP Gold Bracelet mean anything to you?
- Does it mean anything to me? I’ve got a very nice bracelet that my wife gave me a couple of years ago.
Korfman goes on to tell the tragic story of his daughter who was kidnapped and murdered by a serial killer. He and his wife have created a scholarship foundation in her name and will use the prize money for this good cause.
Other players also care primarily about the money, although possibly for other, more mundane reasons. Some people even go so far as to play poker primarily for the money, not because they particularly like it.
Who am I to comment on people’s intentions and reasons? They can go into the game for any reason they want, that’s nobody’s business, really.
But maybe Korfman misses a point, nevertheless. When people say it’s about the bracelet, of course they don’t mean it’s about the bracelet as such. They mean that it’s about the honor. The honor of having won. Having won a WSOP event.
Seeing that a second place may pay pretty well, what’s wrong with a little honor on top. Although on the other hand, those bracelets are getting quite a few nowadays. We’re seeing a veritable bracelet inflation.
One single thing in all this is for sure (like Katja Thater said) – the WSOP bracelets are scheiss ugly.
