Rex … The Greatest Sport Bettor Alive Part 2

October 29, 2008

When I got home, I decided to pull up ESPN again and see which shit ticket I was most likely to collect on. About 10 minutes into the game I learned that “UAB” stood for “University of Alabama at Birmingham”. Alabama has colleges? Does it really take four years of education to learn how to fuck your sister? I couldn’t get the game on TV (since I only have a 13 inch TV with rabbit ears), so I pulled up this thing called “Game Cast” on the ESPN website.  It gives you a play-by-play thing, and you can keep track of the score. Tennessee got out to an early 14 point lead, but it ended 14-0 at halftime.  At the start of the second half, the Alabama Jew-Haters (or whatever they are called) kicked a field goal, and I figured they would hold the spread easily. I just left the “Game Cast” running, and came back ... Read the full blog post...

Rex … The Greatest Sport Bettor Alive Part 1

Is it possible to bet on two different teams to win the exact same game, place the bets within 15 minutes of each other, and cash in on both tickets? Can you really win two sides of the exact same bet? You can if you are me. What can I say,  I am just that damn good. And you’re not. That’s right, I’m gloating.  I don’t get to gloat often, so I am going to milk this one for all it’s worth. Okay, so when, where, what, and why. It went down like this. A few weeks ago, one of my readers gave me something called a "lock of the week".   It was the week of September 13th, 2008, and there was quite a buzz about a particular football game that had an insanely large spread. Obviously a "lock" is a sports pick that was a guaranteed winner, and everyone likes guaranteed winners. Apparently, Tennessee could not possibly beat UAB ... Read the full blog post...

The Bronx, Nevada

Echelon Place has been put on hold for even longer than was initially anticipated. For those of you who don't know (all one of you),  Echelon Place was supposed to be Boyd Gaming's new mega-property. In March of 2007, they knocked down the iconic Stardust to make way for Echelon Place, making it one of the most eagerly awaited properties under development. In August of this year, Boyd gaming, citing the poor economic climate in Las Vegas, decided to lay off almost all of the Echelon construction workers, and "pause" construction on the complex until the company's financial picture brightened. Well, news has come in today that the "pause" will last at least until 2010 (the year that Echelon was scheduled to open).Boyd is now looking at new options for the property, including entering into a partnership with other parties. In addition, Boyd atypically declined to issue any earnings forecasts for the upcoming quarters. This is ... Read the full blog post...

Boobs And Balls On The Las Vegas Strip

October 28, 2008

One of the benefits of living here is that you do, indeed, get some surprises when you least expect them. For example, It's almost November, and upper 80's are forecast for this entire week. When the weather breaks from the norm, you do get little unexpected treats in this town from time to time. Namely ... scantily-clad women. I have been out and about every day this week, and because of the temperatures, I have made it a point to drop by the Hawaiian Tropic Zone several times.  So far, nothing out of the ordinary has happened ... but my expectations remain high. You see, almost one year ago to this day, I went over to check out the Aladdin Casino as it was making its final transition to "Planet Hollywood" which to this day I simply refer to as "Planet Aladdinwood".  Eight years ago, I was actually here in Las Vegas for the grand ... Making Scams Work For You

As someone who would sooner watch Rose O’Donnell go down on Barbara Walters before driving a car in this town, I am a frequent taxicab rider here in Las Vegas. While a solid 95% of my rides are very pleasant and fair (even though I have to give them turn-by-turn directions to anything that is not a hotel), I have noticed that one particular ruse has been rising more and more lately. And it’s not the well-known tunnel scam. It’s the lessor-known “Oops, silly me, I forgot to turn on my meter” scam. The basic premise of the scam is that since most tourists have no idea how much it costs to go from point A to point B, if you casually forget to turn on your meter … you get to charge pretty much whatever you want. In addition, the ride doesn’t register on the fare box. So the cabbie can potentially take ... Read the full blog post...

Walls, Walls, and More Walls. A Trip to the Vegas Suburbs.

October 27, 2008

One of the things I often get criticized for is being too Strip-centric. People always say "There is more to Las Vegas than The Strip, show us more of that." The problem is ... these people are wrong.  Outisde of The Strip, Downtown and some nearby areas such as the Rio, Palms, and Hard Rock  ... Las Vegas is dirt, walls, and strip malls. Mostly walls. You can't see most of the town because it is behind walls. For a few months, readers have been asking me to show them other areas of Las Vegas. I have taken some video of my own neighborhood (which doesn't have walls), but I have been reticent to oblige them with video of the outlying suburbs. Why? First, you can't see over the walls.  Second, I just don't leave The Strip area all that often.  I used to live out in "The Lakes" area, but after moving down here in the shadow ... Saturday Live

October 25, 2008

One of the things people kind of like on my other site is the "Real-Time Las Vegas Webcam" thing I do from time to time. Every now and then when I am walking around Las Vegas, I will take either my laptop or my BlackBerry along with me and just manually upload shots at random of the scenes around me. I suppose that in some way, it makes people sort of feel like they are here ... without actually dropping the cash for airfare. And since it's real-time, you basically see what I see pretty much when I see it. You can see how crowded or empty the city is and kind of get a small feel for the vibe. Since this blog is a new format, and I don't have the real-time photo upload enabled, I will actually have to stop and post the shots manually, which means they may be a few minutes ... Between a Rock & a Hard Place at the Hard Rock

I went over to the Hard Rock to review it for you guys but was thwarted by security. I like the security guys when someone is breaking into my car in the casino parking lot, other than that, not so much. Sigh. Getting to the casino was a bit of a trial for me and it should have been a clue. I drove into the valet only to discover I was two isles over the wrong way and sitting in the cab line. There was no way to get from the cab line to the valet line. I had to go back out to the street and turn left. I HATE having to turn left in traffic. Lucky for me traffic was light on the road (it was all jammed up at the Hard Rock's valet) so I got my left and then left again back into ... Read the full blog post...

Excalibur Electronic Poker Room

October 24, 2008

Recently, the Excalibur Poker Room went all-electronic. They ditched dealers altogether. The X is trying to save money, and save the room at the same time. I went over there to play some cards and see what it was like.  I had never played on an electronic table before, so this whole experience was entirely new to me. When I arrived, the X Poker Room staff was very friendly and helpful, and made great efforts to explain the system. The floor person will stand behind you as you play the first few hands until you get the hang of it. There is a “Call Floor” button on the table to summon a human quickly, and there is always a floor person nearby. You aren’t totally flying blind. Before you can play, you have to sign up for a special Excalibur Poker Room card … which looks exactly like an MGM/Mirage Player’s Club Card. You are ... Read the full blog post...

The Rio Masquerade Show In The Sky

October 23, 2008

Earlier this year, the Rio closed its "Masquerade Show In The Sky" in order to "upgrade it" ... so to speak. I see the Rio show about once a month, so I was kind of bummed that it would be closed for some time. To put it into perspective, this was the "old" Rio show.  The one that supposedly wasn't sexy. The Rio promised that the new show would be more "adult oriented" and "more sexy" ... and I figured that it would be worth it. The show has re-opened, and I recently went back to see this new and "sexier" show, and do you want to know how it was? Well, take a look.  This is the "new, improved, sexier, naughtier" show. Other than the addition of another dude, do you see much difference? Because that's all I see ... more guys. Wang here, wang there, wang everywhere. There were more wangs than a Chinese province. More wangs ... Read the full blog post...
