The Whitman's Sampler of Vegas Performers

August 31, 2009

There was a Michael Jackson Tribute going on at the Pearl inside the Palms on Saturday afternoon. Yeah, yeah, I know, Michael Jackson - I’ve had it up to here with the Michael Jackson crap. I know, me too. But a friend of mine had a ticket he couldn’t use so I went in his place to report back about how all his friends did on stage. The ticket scalpers were very thick inside the Palms. People were grabbing people in line, trying to sell them tickets while they waited to buy tickets. The show was reported to be sold out at one point, but it appeared it was not actually sold out. They had a goal of raising $100,000 for a charity that funds the local music education for kids here. The last I heard they had hit the $75,000 mark. I don’t ... Read the full blog post...

Oui Oui Monsieur

Another weekend has come and gone, and I ended this one the same way I started … in Paris. Even though gaming at Paris is not exactly low-roller friendly in 2009, I still think it has one of the most well executed themes on The Strip.  The theme being “Cosmic Fun on the Space Shuttle” for those unfamiliar with the property. Aside from the appeal of all of the NASA memorabilia, I also have fond memories of the place dating back about about ten years ago. After driving from DC to Las Vegas complete with blown hoses and tires, one of the first things I did after crossing the Hoover Dam and entering the Silver State was to head directly for the Paris self-park and stuff myself so full of king crab and shrimp that I s**t sushi for a week (which may have made a subsequent appearance at the Imperial Palace buffet). Even ... Read the full blog post...

A Plague, a Porsche, and a Set of Jacks

August 30, 2009

The Vegas Plague. Armed with a shotglass, a magnifying glass, and a non-existent degree in biomolecular research, I have finally discovered the method in which this disease is spread: A sick person from Arkansas comes to Las Vegas and they leave their cooties on a gaming chip.  That chip is picked up by a sick person from Japan, and he leaves his germs on it.  Then, a guy from Germany buys into a game and transfers his euro-virus to the chip. As the petri chip sits in a stack, the three germs look at each other, and one of them gets the idea to have a sloppy threeway without protection.  For the next hour the germs roll around, copulate, and produce a three-parented offspring that has dominant genetic traits from all of its parents. Eventually, I walk into a casino and procure this microscopic universe on a wafer.  By this time, the new bastard ... Read the full blog post...

Charo, as entertaining as ever

August 29, 2009

Charo was everyone’s favorite guest on the Love Boat, wasn’t she? Her Cuchi!! Cuchi!!, her thick, Spanish accent, and adorable humor, and well, I suppose those huge boobs had something to do with it, too. I adored her when I was young and watched her on television every opportunity I had. So, Charo is in town, you know. She’s playing a show that is ongoing at the Riviera. Now, your first thought is likely the same as mine, “CHARO?!”, and a chuckle. Then you think about it. You have to see her. I drove by the sign one day when I was plowing down Paradise and made a mental note of “Charo, must see“. Then a few days later I saw an interview she did with Jason Feinberg on our local Fox TV station. Then I was in all kinds of a hurry to ... Read the full blog post...

Looking Back From Above

August 28, 2009

I was scrolling through some old photos the other day, and I came across pictures I took from the Eiffel Tower nearly three years ago. While looking at them, I realized that much has changed on the south end of The Strip since that time. Signature has been completed, the Planet Hollywood Tower has topped out, City Center has been nearly finished, Aladdin is now Planet Hollywood, and the M has been built on the far South end. Obviously, it was time to go back up and refresh my photo cache of this ever-changing city from one of its most famous observation points. Before enjoying the view, by all means, ride along with me to the top. When I got to the top of the tower this afternoon, the first thing I did was pull a forty ounce bottle of malt liquor out of my back pocket, unscrew the cap, pour some over ... A CityCenter Sneak Peek

There is something new for the artsy set. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art is opening up a new exhibit on September 18, 2009, and it will run through April 4, 2010. This art show is named "12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter" and is partnered with the CityCenter Fine Art Collection. I really didn't think most tourists who come to Vegas were interested in art gallery shows, but I'm getting asked about art now and then these days. People like to go to museums and have a little culture in their gambling and feasting outings, who knew? As it turns out, it wasn't just a goofy idea dreamed up by the Bellagio and Steve Wynn. People like still love some art! My faith in humanity has been renewed. "12 + 7" stands for twelve contemporary art stars and seven of the master architects who ... Read the full blog post...

Feeding The Habit

August 27, 2009

Although I like to jokingly refer to myself as such, I don't honestly consider myself a degenerate gambler. While I do enjoy gambling, it's doesn't even make my list of top 5 overall interests.  For that matter, I'm not even sure if it makes the top ten. I played three instruments, played basketball competitively, and entered things such as the New York City bicycle marathon.  I flew airplanes and surfed (in water).  I rode motorcycles and I still like taking photos and enjoy screwing around with computers.  I have a litany of interests that appear before “gambling” even comes into the picture. The problem is, as I age, the less things I can do and the more gambling I end up participating in.  Try playing basketball with two shot knees.  Try biking in 108 degree weather (with two shot knees).  Try stepping on ... Internet Gambling … An Unlikely Cure

August 25, 2009

I've put forth many hypotheses about how Las Vegas could revive its revenue base, and most of them have been fairly commonsensical.  Better service, more skin, better odds, etc. There is one thing that I never really took into account, however. Technology. In the 70's, if I wanted to see a naked woman, my options were limited. I could walk to 14th Street or Times Square (as I sometimes did) and watch the working girls flash various body parts at passersby, but I rarely got to see the whole girl and the meager money I had as a nine year old wasn't going to get me any slick on my willy. Of course, I also participated in an endeavor that many other boys did at the time: Dumpster diving behind one of the dozens of adult bookstores nearby. Sure, there were coffee stains (or worse) on the discarded products, but you take what you can get as ... Read the full blog post...

Fifty Dollars and a Name

It's a happy day for Oscar Goodman and David Stern. Almost. On October 1st 2009, Nevada's Domestic Partnership law will go into effect, and if they so desire, these two will finally be able to admire each other's balls and gaze into each other's eyes in a slightly more official capacity. Even though Governor “Let's Pay a Czar to Spend Money” Gibbons initially vetoed the law, he eventually was spanked by the Nevada State Legislature who rammed it up his rear end anyway. Among other things, this law will allow “domestic partners” to hold community property, be responsible for each other's debt, and will allow a less wealthy partner demand alimony from a more wealthy partner in case of a breakup. I was not aware of this, but apparently, there is a large group of folks that yearn to be responsible for each other's credit card payments outside of marriage. This being the case, if anyone ... Las Vegas Back in the Day

The first time I ever set my foot down in Las Vegas, is when I exited my boyfriend's beat up, olive green, VW Bug, in 1975. I graduated High School that year. As the custom was in Southern California at the time, you all piled in buses and went to Disneyland. Being the more 'interesting' type of kid at seventeen, I took off for Vegas with my first love. He had a brother living there and we thought we'd have some fun with him and his wife for a few days in Fabulous Las Vegas. It has been a very long time really and my memories have faded, but I do remember still some of the good stuff of the trip. The boyfriend, well, let's just say I try to block that memory. I learned some real lessons there. Vegas, on the other hand, ... Read the full blog post...
