Breakfast and Blackjack

September 30, 2009

There are a couple of folks from out of town (I include Henderson in that designation) visiting Las Vegas today and somewhere along the line it was decided that an informal breakfast was taking place this morning at the Peppermill. Given that each step I take feels as though someone is shooting me in the knee with an AK-47, it made perfect sense for me to walk to this small gathering.  Face it, there's a little bit of masochism in all of us. The Peppermill is one of those places that looks horribly out of place on the Las Vegas Strip.  It is a stand-alone structure in the middle of a parking lot in a configuration reminiscent of a suburban Denny's. In slightly better economic times the mill was the subject of frequent rumors that it was operating under the ever-present threat of the wrecking ball, but such concerns have been put to ... He broke our Beloved Charo

I enjoyed Charo’s show so much that I was really looking forward to seeing here show again. Charo is scheduled indefinitely at the Riviera Casino in Las Vegas. Click here to see my review. Charo is an accomplished musician, playing mostly classical and flamenco on that guitar of hers. Her show includes some awesome Flamenco dancers, as well. So, I prepared a spot in my busy schedule just for me to see Charo. This would be a rare opportunity for me to see a show just for me to see a show. I don’t have to start taking photos, video, or continually write a story in my head the entire time I’m sitting there. I can just sit back and enjoy because the show is only for my entertainment. Guess what happened? Charo sustained an injury! Charo was backstage at the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon over the ... Read the full blog post...

Supply and Supply

September 29, 2009

With all the talk and anticipation of City Center and the F'inBlue, I completely forgot that another major project is due to go live soon. I've already grown so accustomed to its omnipresence on the Vegas skyline, the fact that it's not even open has completely dropped off of my mental radar … which admittedly is not very powerful. The only reason that I now know is due to an injury.  I (once again) blew out my knee late last night and I have spent the better part of the day confined to a chair in front of a computer surfing por … I mean perusing Christian websites, worshipping the lord, and catching up on local news. Fortunately (I suppose), I hit the Las Vegas Review-Journal website to see if they had any more prolific prostitutes or geriatric erotica with which to amuse myself. I regret to report that they did not, but I ... Read the full blog post...

ALICE!

Much like I feel about Ozzy, I'm glad Alice is still alive. He probably shouldn't be, so we are all blessed. Not only is he alive, he’s still working like he always was. He’s coming back to Las Vegas. I wonder if he’ll give me some make-up tips? I’ve been feeling a little outdated lately. Alice Cooper, aka Vincent Furnier, will be playing The Orleans Showroom on October 23rd, 24th and 25th. That would be my favorite choice of venue for him. I love the showroom at The Orleans. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. It seats 827 people, but you'd never know it. It seems so small when you're in there and the view and sound is great. I have seen Etta James, Craig Ferguson, Sammy Shore and others in there and they were ... Read the full blog post...

The Greatest Gambling Story Ever Told

September 28, 2009

September 28th. Average high temperature, 89, today's high temperature 102 according to my own thermometer. Labor Day finished up a couple of weeks ago, and it's officially autumn, but for some reason Summer never left.  For all intents and purposes, August of 2009 lasted sixty days. By this time of year, I'm usually breaking out my laptop in the Flamingo courtyard or on the steps in front of Caesars, but since my machine is only rated to run at temperatures of 95 degrees or below I've been out of luck. The extended length of this particular season has definitely put a damper on my overall frame of mind, but hey, my loss is NV Energy's gain.  The AC has been working overtime and I'm pretty sure this draws more power than, you know, not running the AC. All hail single-payer electricity.  I can't wait for the townhalls and the teabaggers to begin gathering and decrying ... Read the full blog post...

Barry Manilow is Back

Barry Manilow is back on stage in Las Vegas. He was gone for a while. As a matter of fact, when my Aunt came to town she had tickets. The show was canceled and she was none to happy about it. She was really looking forward to seeing his Las Vegas show. I don’t know what the problem was with Barry Manilow for those weeks. He has a reputation for not missing shows. Whatever it was, it had him out for quite some time. Does it matter why? He’s back, that’s all that matters and fans are filling the Las Vegas Hilton up once again to see him. I’m not a real big fan. I never was. Sure, I like his songs and can sing along with most of the big hits. Oh, admit it, you can too! ... Read the full blog post...

What Happened In Vegas?

What can I tell you, I have impeccable timing. If I were slightly more important (okay, a lot more important) and a little more paranoid, I might think they were doing this just to flip the proverbial bird in my direction. I woke up this morning, and this is the first thing that came across my news reader: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/2009-09-27-las-vegas-what-happens-here_N.htm The Las Vegas Sun reports that tourism leaders are returning to the message that sold the city in the best of times after using a series of less memorable pitches — advertisements saying "Vegas right now" and "Crazy times call for crazy fun." Those ads respected difficult times, but tourism officials say it's time to test a former blockbuster. The "What Happens Here" campaign has been pulled off the shelf and put back on TV … During months of brainstorming, the agency entertained — and rejected — dozens of other like-minded pitches, including: "The stories are true;" "The ... Las Vegas: Come As You Are

September 27, 2009

“Can you recommend a club for my next visit?” If you live in Vegas, visit with any frequency, or simply follow the city, you are no doubt on the receiving end of this question on a fairly consistent basis. The problem is, the person asking will never get a consistent answer because there are basically two factions in the Las Vegas knowledge-sphere. One group loves nightclubs and the subculture that goes along with it.  The other group hates them and everything they stand for. Even though I am more aligned with the latter than the former, I felt somewhat committed to actually patronize a club last night because, despite my protests, this is where a visiting relative decided to celebrate an event.  For a couple of reasons I'm not going to name the specific club, but suffice to say that it is a popular place that is heavily advertised.  I have been to a ... It's About Time

September 25, 2009

Complaining about Vegas timeshare drones is almost as overbaked as complaining about six five Blackjack, but I think it may be time to touch on the issue once again. This isn't exactly out of the blue.  I have had a couple of run-ins with timeshare drones as of late, and I'm becoming increasingly surprised by their growing level of hostility. In the interest of full disclosure, I have not always had clean hands with this particular group of people.  To the contrary, I've used them for my own personal amusement at times, often saying the most inappropriate thing that popped into my head. At the time, I felt they deserved it. You see, I have a theory.  The theory holds that when you interject yourself into someone else's life unsolicited, you are taking a risk.  As such, you get what you get, and you have to live with it.  For this reason it's always ... The Bellagio Gardens Fall Display

You know you’ve acclimated to the Vegas hot weather when you walk through the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and you actually get cold! The fall colors are out in the gardens and it is, of course, beautiful. Maybe it is not like a stroll through Vermont, but it is gorgeous, all the same. The new Fall display opened in the Conservatory on last Thursday and I took some photos for you. I know many of my readers love that place and if you can’t make it here this season, I have some pictures for you. In the entrance is a thirteen-foot scarecrow looking down on you with a smile. There are gold, scarlet and amber colors throughout the garden and sprinkled about. Some of the old features are back, like the talking tree, the 35-foot tall cider mill powered by water, and the ten-foot tall Ent - ... Read the full blog post...
