Stripwalking
May 31, 2010
Two weeks ago I fractured my ankle and was advised to stay off of it. Of course, I didn't exactly comply with this advice, but I did minimize the damage by riding around town in my Six Fo' Impala more than usual. Today, I decided to push the issue a bit, and I spent most of the afternoon walking and playing amongst the Memorial Day Weekend crowd. While I would absolutely describe this weekend as "very crowded" ... it's not quite as busy as I was expecting it to be. Now, usually when I say this, somebody comes online screaming "What are you talking about?! I was there this weekend and it was soooooo crooowwwwwwdeeeeed!!!" Everyone wants to think that they were here during the most epic weekend ever, and the prevailing wisdom seems to be that if I don't declare it to be packed, I ... Read the full blog post...
That 70’s Post
May 30, 2010
Friday was the first night of "Summer of the '70s" Downtown, and to show support for the effort, I decided to spend a couple of hours patronizing Fremont Street and soaking in the new theme. Before availing myself of the entertainment, however, I had to eat, and this time around I decided to fill up on the Golden Gate's $3.99 "large" shrimp cocktail. Honestly, in my several dozen trips to eat at the Golden Gate, this was the first time I had ever noticed the "large" option, and I am upset at myself for this. Had I paid attention to the menu earlier, I would have been ordering one of these instead of two of the cheaper offerings. The bigger cocktail is more appealing to me because the "large" shrimp are actually large. I'm not sure if they fall into the "jumbo" realm, but they are damn close, and ... Let The Games Begin
May 29, 2010
It's hard to believe that it's already been a year, but today kicked off the 2010 World Series of Poker. Of course, the Main Event still doesn't begin for another month, but it feels like only yesterday that I was perusing the halls of the 2009 event. When I went over to the Rio to check out the preliminary tournaments today, I ran into a situation which I had heard about, but had never witnessed first-hand. Standing outside near the red carpet, random grinders were cutting deals with other players and benefactors. People were showing up to the event without money and were trying to get staked on the spot. It kind of reminded me of trying to get picked for dodgeball. One guy was saying "I came in 4th at the blah blah tournament last month", and another guy was pimping his son and trying to get him into a tournament. ... Read the full blog post...
The Lady Luck Revival
May 27, 2010
Lady Luck is a somewhat imposing Downtown casino that was shuttered in 2006, expected to re-open a year later ... yet still sits dormant. Over the last year or so, I've received numerous inquiries into the state of affairs at the Lady Luck. Unfortunately, to all of the inquiries I have received, my answer has always been the same: I don't know. While I am acquainted with a fair number of people who work in casinos which are actually open, I honestly wouldn't know who to contact when it comes to projects which are in the works. Even if I did know who to contact, I doubt I would do so. There is a huge difference between a "blogger" and a reporter. A blogger writes a web log of his/her personal experiences and opinions, while a reporter investigates facts and is assigned to stories of which he/she may ... Read the full blog post...
Positive Creep
May 26, 2010
Yesterday, construction began on a brand new piece of art. This is a display which will adorn my own neighborhood, and it is expected to be completed in three months. A short, mainstream explanation of the work-in-progress follows: We already have the Bow and Arrow Motel, the Horseshoe, and the Silver Slipper along Las Vegas Boulevard North, as well as the Vegas Sign, Martini Glass, and more along East Fremont Street. Now, another set of street installations is coming to the downtown area. Las Vegas has commissioned artist Dennis Oppenheim to create a gateway to the Arts District in downtown Las Vegas. His previous work consists of other outdoor installations around the world in locations including Lithuania; Kansas City, Missouri; Ventura, California; and Seattle’s Olympic Park. The local project will display a pair of 45-foot-tall paint brushes angled in over the street. Each will be topped by a set of lights that will shine a rainbow of ... Read the full blog post...
The High Cost of Self Esteem
May 24, 2010
"Would you like to buy me a drink?" Up until this point, my evening was actually going pretty well. "What?", I responded to the young lady who had just parked herself beside me. I was hoping that I had misunderstood her but I was sure that I hadn't. "I said I'm going to let you buy me a drink", she reiterated, this time with even more self-confidence than before. I looked at the woman, this time more intently. She was in her mid 20's, had light brown hair ... and was about a 6.5 on a scale of 1-10. "That's a very generous offer", I said, "but I'm not even buying my own drinks." Technically, I was correct. For the first time in a long time, someone else was picking up my tab. It's not cheap being VegasRex since the money to grace others with my wonderful presence usually comes out of my own pocket. ... Read the full blog post...
Filling The Gap
A few weeks ago, while standing on the balcony of a Sahara penthouse suite, I looked to the lot immediately south of the casino and asked "Are they supposed to build something here?" The person whom I was with had no idea, and when I later posed the question in my own forums, I realized that almost nobody had an answer. The former home of the Wet n' Wild amusement park has been sitting vacant since 2004, and like so many other projects around town, it's devolved into little more than an eyesore. Yesterday, on my way back from an absolutely thrilling hold 'em session at Caesars Palace, I passed the vacant lot again and noticed a new fence which read "10,000 New Jobs For Nevada - Silver State Arena". Huh ... what?! Good god, how on earth had I managed to miss this development? They are building a stadium in my own backyard ... Read the full blog post...
Freaky Friday
May 23, 2010
Located in an unimpressive building on Industrial Road, only a block from the Trump Tower, sits a somewhat unlikely Las Vegas attraction. The Erotic Heritage Museum has been around for awhile, but for some reason, I've always just assumed that the place was a trap. I envisioned going inside, staring at a couple of posters on a wall, and then being herded into a strip club where I would be mercilessly hustled for lapdances until I was able to summon my inner ninja to stun my attackers and slip out the back door. It is entirely possible that I have lived in this town for too long, because I no longer trust anyone or anything here, and my natural assumption is that everything is a complete scam. More often than not, I'm correct ("Hey, how long are you in town for? Do you want to see a show?"), but after hearing some ... Read the full blog post...
Where’s The Gambling?
May 21, 2010
How about a round of applause for a little more Downtown redevelopment ... The Las Vegas City Council today unanimously approved leasing a city-owned, three-story former retail store to a pair of developers who hope to turn it into a nightclub that will help light up downtown's Fremont East District. The building, at the southeast corner of Fremont Street and Sixth Street, is envisioned to have a nightclub within about a year to a year and a half, and will also be used for retail space and condominiums, according to the developers. Terry Caudill, who owns the Four Queens and Binion's casinos, and Carlos "Big Daddy" Adley and his wife, Ava Berman Adley, who own the Velvet Margarita in Hollywood, have formed a limited liability corporation to lease the property, called 601 Fremont LLC. "We're going to bring in some of the top retail, restaurant and amenities, literally in the country to this spot," ... Read the full blog post...
We Are Beautiful, No Matter What The Trop Says
May 19, 2010
Even though I had transit difficulties on Monday, I was still able to make it to the Tropicana without too much trouble, and while I was there I decided to get some updated shots of their "new" pool. Of course, Monday just happened to be the most overcast, windy day we had experienced in several weeks, but such is the dark cloud that ostensibly hovers over my head. It's not that Jesus doesn't love me, he's just not big on public displays of affection when it comes to yours truly. In any event, the "new and improved" Tropicana Pool has been open for much of this month, but as you can clearly see from the photographs, it is not yet finished. At this point, the pool does not look all that different from the "old" pool. Since I have always been a huge fan of the Tropicana swimming hole, this is certainly ... Read the full blog post...
