Dinner In The Sky
March 21, 2009
Las Vegas has a brand new attraction. It’s called “Dinner in the Sky”. I first heard about this last year, and I have been keeping very close tabs on it.
I’m kind of a height junkie. I like flying in airplanes and helicopters, I like going up in The Stratosphere Tower, I like the Eiffel Tower and Foundation Room, I like Sunrise Mountain … I just really like elevated views. I’m not afraid of heights, I actually seek them out.
Therefore, when I first heard about this, it seemed right up my alley.
Now, the premise of this thing is a little odd, so you are going to have to keep an open mind. The gist of Dinner in The Sky is that you put a dinner table on a platform. Then, you put chefs in the center of the dinner table. Then, you seat 20 or so people around the dinner table, hoist them 160 feet into the air with a crane, and feed them fine food and wine.
Make sense?
Of course it doesn’t make any damn sense. That’s the whole appeal of it.
Why do people eat on a giant platform dangling above the street below?
Because they can.
Their original intention of the “Sky” people was to launch flights from a lot adjacent to the Palms, but for unknown reasons, they had to find a new location. This delayed things for a little bit. At the moment, it is located on Sahara Ave, just west of the I-15. It’s located behind a bank building in a non-descript part of town, and is not terribly easy to find … but I assure you it’s there.
This afternoon, out of pure curiosity I decided to check the status of the company, and I noticed that they had a “sunset flight” scheduled tonight for 6:30pm. I looked at the clock, and it was 6:10. Since I have been curious about this for some time, I headed out the door and sped through the tail end of rush hour traffic. I just had to see this thing in action. I also wanted the combination of the night/day flight … which I understand costs a little extra for “passengers”.
I arrived at the launch pad about 10 minutes before the flight. I got to watch as everyone was strapped in, and I watched as they were lifted off almost 200 feet above the parking lot on Sahara Avenue. I imagine the view was pretty nice.
Now, I really don’t know how they came up with this concept, but I suspect that marijuana, or possibly mushrooms were involved.
When I try to think of how it went down, I imagine the conversation went something like this.
President of the Company: “Duuuu-huuu-huuude, wouldn’t it be so cool if we could like … eat up high while suspended by a wire?”
Vice President: “Duuuuuuuuude!”
And so a business was born.
While the dinner table was airborne, I spoke with the employees for a good 20 minutes. They were quite eager to answer any questions I had.
My first question was … “What if I have to pee?”
The response? “No problem, it only takes a minute and a half to lower the platform. You go, then we hoist you back up.”
I guess that was that.
I forgot to ask what happened if you dropped your fork, but I guess the answer is obvious. You poke the eye out of the guy operating the rope down below.
They went on to tell me that the platform was 7 tons fully loaded, felt stable, and did not sway. All of the ground employees had been up in it several times, and they told me that it was a blast. I believe them.
I was also told that the attraction is still looking for a permanent home, and their intention is to eventually move it to the lot adjacent to the Fashion Show Mall. That should provide for a pretty interesting view, as it will be perfectly positioned in the “dog leg” of The Las Vegas Strip.
Dinner is a couple hundred bucks per person, and your “flight” lasts an hour.
This particular crane is the only one of its kind open to the general public. They have other DITS cranes, but they are only used for Corporate functions and other closed get-togethers.
In Vegas, like most other people/things in town, anyone with cash can ride it. As a matter of fact, I think that should be our new slogan: “Vegas, if you have the cash, you can ride it”.
Anyway, I’m glad I finally saw the thing. My curiosity was really getting the best of me, and this dinner experience just might find a niche’.
It still doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, and I think there is going to be a huge “WTF? Factor” when people first hear about it, but when you have people sitting in casinos all over town playing 6:5 Blackjack … it’s proof positive that you can convince anybody to do anything.
I actually spoke to the guys about arranging a group flight later this year, and I may end up booking a reservation and having dinner on the crane myself.
When all is said and done, I don’t think they will have a very hard time selling this concept, because … let’s face it … everyone likes to eat when they get high.
It’s usually not quite this literal, but what the hell … it works for me.

Oh boy another crane in the Vegas skyline. Wow Rex I thought you would be all over that. Dinner in the sky is nothing new, just new to Vegas. I do have a blog idea for you Rex if your interested. You have been bringing up customer service issues lately and since I work in customer service they interested me. I think poor quality and customer service go hand in hand. Well my issue with Vegas is the decade plus long food quality and buffet issues. Dozens of buffets and food establishments are rated horribly time and time again but yet they never try to get better and remain open. Why? We or they can’t blame the economy because this has been going on for years. You would think these establishments would take all the negative feedback and run with it but they don’t. Please help and do a blog on this. Thanks.

This company made a swing through Florida – Orlando, Tampa, Miami – for two dinners a night per stop. Not a bad gimmick. If it doesn’t work out in a city just roll on down the road to the next town with the 7 ton table. I wonder whenn the franchise sales start.

I can see this doing ok in Vegas. It would help to lower the price a bit as $200 each is a bit pricey.
My only question is what are they going to do to the people with reservations when the “flight” is cancelled due to wind? Seeing how ofter the Sirens show gets called off due to wind, I can only imagine that the crane will have to be offline on windy days.
Though, that could attract a whole new market. Not just dinner at 160ft, but a thrill-ride dinner at 160ft. It’d be like Insanity on the Strat. serving appetizers.

It’s not something I’m into, but I will say this, Vegas can always use a bit of getting back to it’s WTF roots. Way too serious lately a little absurd works for a 4 mile stretch with volcanoes, castles, and billboard pyramids.
