Beach Clubbing

February 27, 2010

The largest eyesore south of Echelon Place is finally getting ready to disappear.

Well, not so much “disappear” exactly, but it is finally slated to become something other than an eyesore.

For the last several months, the construction at the base of the Encore Hotel and Casino has made the vacant lot directly across the street look downright appealing.

Every time I have driven by the construction site (including today, the photos on this page were taken hours ago), I always feel surprised that Steve Wynn would allow such a fugly scene to play out in front of one of his signature properties.  It seems so … heterosexual.

If I were building an addition to my property, I would have no qualms with digging the place up and parking dump trucks on the lawn, but Steve “I Need More Teeth Whitener” Wynn?

Perish the thought.

Alas, Steve took it upon himself to crap where he ate for many months, and was content to be a major contributor to the blight that is the North Strip, but it’s now getting ready to pay dividends.  I hope.

The $100 million addition to Encore is wrapping up its construction phase, and will soon begin its hiring phase.

Wynn Resorts is joining the popular Vegas pool party scene and plans to fill 400 positions for its new Strip-side beach and nightclub area.
The Encore Beach Club has been under construction for months on the west side of Encore, right along Las Vegas Boulevard. It will be the first resort beach attraction directly facing the Strip.

Construction is also under way on the Surrender Nightclub, the second club at Encore, after XS.

Group interviews for positions at both properties will begin March 11.

Positions to be filled at the venue include: model cocktail servers, model bartenders, hosts, promoters, lifeguards, pool attendants and security.

In Las Vegas-speak, “Model bartenders” and “Model Cocktail Servers” = “No Fat Chicks”

Seriously, how do looks and proficiency with a tray bear any relation to each other?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge proponent of eye candy (a solid 10% of my blog is devoted to it), but even I get kind of skeeved out when I read these kinds of help wanted ads.  I guess hot waitresses are like sausages.  The end product is great, but you don’t want to see it being made.

Frankly, I’m not sure how excited I am about these new “attractions”.  I was not aware that we hand a pretense void in this city.  To the contrary, I’m pretty sure we were set in that area.

Nightclubs are now a dime-a-dozen in this town, and I’m not a huge fan of any of them. Obviously, I am not the target demographic for this new endeavor, but I can’t help but wonder who is.

This kind of project is very “2007″.  Back when bags and baggettes ran the town.  Back when every self-respecting gambler was chased away and the town hung out the “Middle Class Unwelcome Here” signs.

Not to mention, Aria will be soon opening its own new pool/nightclub combination called “Liquid” & “Haze” respectively.  Much like Crystals Shopping Mall, it all seems a little overkill and out-of-touch with the times.

Established beach clubs like Rehab still have overwhelming mindshare, and it’s not like the other clubs were overflowing on a typical Summer weekend.  I’m not really sure there was a demand out there that needed to be addressed with all of these new clubs.

Maybe I’m wrong, though.

One interesting thing about Encore’s two venues is that they will face the Vegas Strip.  Assuming sidewalk passersby will be able to see the festivities in an unobstructed manner, it could provide a welcome relief from the contiguous blight currently present in the area.  On the other hand, I’m not sure how excited club-goers will be when they realize that they are specimens in a human zoo.

In any event, it will be interesting to see how the Summer of 2010 plays out.

If Steve builds it, will they come?  The man has a good track record, so if anyone can do it … I suppose it’s him.

As always, I expect the worst and hope for the best.

Instead of “more of the same”, I would really like to see a fresh idea or two hit The Boulevard, but it doesn’t appear that this is going to happen anytime soon.

For those of you who like daylife as much as nightlife, you are about to get two new options for both.

Enjoy.

If you simply advertise for a cocktail server or bartender, you can’t fire them 20 years from now for being old or fat. Reference the many cocktail waitresses at older resorts who are pushing 60 but hold the best shifts. Unions and seniority.

In fact… it was interesting to watch the opening of Bellagio, Venetian, et. al. and see that they had hired the hottest, youngest cocktail servers in the market. While many older resorts had cocktail servers who were perhaps a few years (and pounds) past their “youngest, hottest” in appearance.

Side Note: Don’t shoot the messenger. Just noting why what is happening.

If you hire them as models… well… they can be let go any time they aren’t up to being a model. If they hire you to simply carry cocktails… they have to let you work as long as you can carry cocktails.

Well, just like XS has become a dominant player in town, I believe Encore Beach Club will do the same. What interests me is that it is the first daylife pool area designed to be just that from the beginning, rather than taking an area of an already open pool and just walling it off.

Hopefully it won’t become a major sausagefest like the other pool parties are.

The nightclubs are a dime-a-dozen in this town. Enough. Come up with something new, please….
