Coin Slot Machines!
February 21, 2009
So what’s the big deal? I won five bucks, big deal. Yeah, but I won it on a slot machine that I ACTUALLY PUT QUARTERS INTO! They were quarters from the bottom of my purse. So, basically, it was FREE money.
This is how I am used to gambling. Back in the day, I would go to a casino and dig all the change out of the bottom of my purse. I would pick a machine that sort of ‘spoke’ to me. You know, you go around the room with the psychic powers turned on and then one machine grabs your attention. It is like the sky opens up, angels sing, a spotlight comes down on it and it is THE machine. Then I would put all this found money into the machine. It was a great system and it worked for me.
Until one day after I had moved to Las Vegas. I thought I would play some slots while waiting for a friend. I looked and looked and couldn’t figure out how to put the money in. WTF? I was pissed. What kind of screwy place is this?! Well, what I found out later is that life had passed me by. That’s what ya get when you spend a few years gambling in Wells, Nevada. Some kind soul somewhere filled me in. You have to put bills in only now, or cash tickets. What’s a cash ticket? Yeah, I know.
Main Street Station has coin slot machines! I had no idea. Well, I usually have no idea on anything until a tourist notices something. When my Dad spotted a coin slot, we were all over those machines.
I thought I should take my Dad and his relatives downtown to look around a bit. We had planned to do dinner somewhere and they asked what my favorite place is. I told them the 777 Cafe at Main Street Station. Of course, the buffet in there is my favorite on Tuesdays, that’s steak night. They were doubtful, I think, when I told my story of getting a $7.25 prime rib dinner in the 777. I think they were preparing themselves for the worst. They were looking at me rather suspiciously.
I told them the portions were huge and the food was great, but they fell for the $1.95 salad upgrade. I sucked on what appeared to be a half gallon size lemonade while they got full on their salads. Then dinner arrived to their moans. They were full already. Tsk, tsk, tried to tell them. Luckily they had planned on splitting their entrée. They both ate and ate and even left some fish and chips behind. They loved it.
Of course, I had the ‘small’ $7.25 prime rib. It was still wonderful. I love that place.
Right on the menu it says that the root beer Float comes in only one size. Well, there’s a warning. I have not seen the root beer float, but I’ll bet you need a couple of friends to help you get through it. At a little over four dollars, the thing must be party size.
So, the Triple Seven Cafe was a big hit. And so was Main Street Station. I wouldn’t be able to keep them out of there even if I tried. Every day they are back in the place having a blast.
Today they are in Prescott, Arizona. No, Nancy didn’t win the car, they are in the rental car. I hope they aren’t too tired to go to Fremont Street Experience tonight. I’m ready for it. Today it is almost warm again and that means, party downtown time!
