I finally found a casino I like
April 10, 2009
I made it out to the boonies to see the M Resort. As you might know, I do not like leaving my bubble. Their address is in Henderson but it seems so much farther. There isn’t much else out there. If you stay there, they are serious about the mountain views because that is about all you will see out the window. I live on the north end of the strip and google maps says it is about sixteen miles from my house. If you rent a car when you’re here, then you could easily stay at the M Resort and do the Strip too.
I was impressed with the casino from the moment we parked on the upper level of the garage. We were actually following the Valet signs and ended up there. We never did find the valet, but I guess it is somewhere. We had three old people in the car and we were following the signs carefully, so we take no responsibility for not being able to find the valet. The parking upper level was better than Valet anyway. It was a really easy walk to the door.
I really like the décor they have in the casino. They have some really cool huge lamps that hang all throughout the place. I even liked the carpet! Everything is so very 1960s with simple lines and smoothness. The colors are the ever popular browns, tans, oranges with a splash of red or purple here and there. I think the Encore could have learned something over here with use of color and shapes.
For whatever reason (I SO hate my camera) my photos of inside the place did not turn out well at all. They were all so dark. I tried to fix up this one so you could get kind of an idea.
Remember I was stopped from taking photos in the Studio B buffet? Haha, I found the source of those incredible desserts! No one stopped me from photographing in there! Whooho! There is a bakery that apparently makes some if not all of those delectables.
The casino floor is laid out in sort of an unusual way with a pod idea. There are banks of slots all over and at first glance it looks like it is all slots, but in the middle of the casino floor there is an open bar. The gaming tables are in groups all around that bar. You’ll see some gaming tables and then more slots, then another group of gaming tables. It goes like this all around that bar. I have photos! But you can’t see them because they are all way too dark. Bummer, I know. I even was loving the carpet in there. Seriously, they have really cool carpet in this casino.
Part of the lounge cooperated with my lame ass coolpix camera. Here is the back portion of the bar where the booths are. There is a nice stage and it is really cozy in there. The end of the bar opens up to a balcony where you can sit and listen to the band outside. It overlooks the pool.
Now, this is a pool! They have their cabanas right in the water! It is so Cleopatra-esque. What a sunburn you could get out there, but it would be damn cool getting it. You slid open the gently flowing drapes of your cabana and slowly step down into the water. Have your personal photographer ready, because you are going to look gorgeous out there.
There are also chairs which are right in the water. I liked this idea when then did it over at the Golden Nugget’s pool. What a nice way to stay cool in our 115 degree heat.
There is a stage at the far end for, I’m assuming, bands and what-not. A real luxurious party pool, it seems.
The lobby was, totally awesome. They have walls that are made of vases of lilies. There is a waterfall. The super high ceilings are covered with lofting fabric on one end and open glass on the other end. In this photo you’ll see the actress I hang around with when she’s in from Los Angeles. She won’t allow me to take her photo for the blogs but she accidentally got in to this one.
I’ve seen an awful lot of casinos at this point and they all seem to just run together. It is the same sort of stuff over and over, but the M Resort really stood out for me. Maybe they designed it with people like me in mind, sort of a taste thing. I don’t know why I liked it so much, but I do. I’m looking forward to going back again and again.
An added note, there is a $25 resort fee per night when you book a room at the M Resort. This does give you unlimited in-room wireless access, unlimited access to the fitness center, nightly turn down service including bottled water, choice of daily newspaper, complimentary scheduled transportation to & from the Airport plus Shopping (Strip: Mandalay Place and Fashion Show), complimentary local and 800 phone calls. The free Internet access alone is worth that fee, if you need it. If you don’t need those things, then I suppose it is an unneeded expense. Room rates start at $75 per night.

I got a very nice add in the mail for M opening. How close to your bubble is the place?
I live as far from M as you can get and still be in the Vegas area.
If you have not tried the Red Rock it too is quite nice and the Sunday Brunch is the best I have had. Good views too.
For day trips I live 3 miles from Aliernte that opened last Nov 11, so it is very new yet. It has an : “Original Pancake House” So if breakfast and lunch is your need it is a good place. It is only a Casino though so if shopping and Spa is your need… It does have a fitness center they brag about however I have not seen it.
If you haven’t check Aliente out and plan to, contact me I’ll go with you and give you my opinion to throw into your info basket.

Hi Pappy! I’m about 16 miles away because I’m on the North end of the strip.
I’ve been to Aliante to see Eric Burdon and the Animals and thought it was okay. Boy, that is far out there!
I’ll tweet you the next time I go out to Aliante and you can show me around the joint.
Looks like I said south end of the strip in the blog post. LOL I’ll go fix that now. (perpetually lost, I am)

Sorry to disagree, but those resort fee’s are total BS. Everything you list is considered an “amenity” at other leading hotels. This is just as bad as charging me $25 for a checked luggage. These places need to just be honest in their pricing and sell themselves on what they really are…if they are good, they will get the customers without being disingenious.
That being said, I do like your blog and read it regularly, please keep up the good work.

Hi Joe,
The marketer in me disagrees with you about the resort fees. But the consumer in me totally agrees. The M Resort seems kind of inexpensive at $75 a night, and at $100 it is still not bad for such a nice place. A lot of Las Vegas hotels are doing away with the free internet access, from what I understand. That’s very unfortunate.
Thanks for the feedback! I love hearing from readers like you.
