A Night at Gilley’s
June 23, 2010
Last night, I decided to make my second trip to Gilley's since it opened two months ago at Treasure Island. I had to meet someone at the Mirage later in the night, and I figured the country bar would be a good place to kill some time since I was running about an hour ahead of schedule. I had my ride drop me off in front of the Mirage, and I then headed north and tried to enter Gilley's from the outside. I soon realized the error of my ways. To call the pedestrian situation in front of TI a "logistical nightmare" would be kind. Calling it a clusterf**k would denigrate the beautiful act of making love to clusters. Frankly, I don't know what to call the situation other than a "complete and unadulterated mess". If you try to reach Gilley's by walking north from the most populated portion ... Boogie Nights
June 14, 2010
Another weekend has come and gone, and once again, I spent most of it at the "Summer of the '70s" on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas. This weekend, I had kind of a special reason for dividing my time in such a unilateral manner. A KISS Tribute band was playing two nights consecutively, and I wanted to catch at least some of their performance on both nights. I still remember almost every moment of the KISS revolution from when I was but a child. If you were in elementary school from roughly 1974-1979, you were likely saturated with KISS music and imagery every day in the hallways. Every red-blooded boy owned at least Destroyer and Dynasty, and KISS lunchboxes and posters were fairly common. I even remember this one kid who would play air guitar during lunch, stick packets of ketchup in his mouth and bite down on them ... ejecting "blood" ... Read the full blog post...
Prattle of the Sexes
June 2, 2010
Over the past week or so, I've received more than a few pieces of correspondence from people who seem to be surprised that I have not addressed a particular injustice that is being perpetrated in my own backyard. (Damn, that was a long sentence.) Apparently there is a civil rights crisis being perpetrated by Wynn Resorts as we speak. A crisis which threatens the very foundation of our democracy, and one which represents another step in our unobstructed march toward totalitarianism. You see, the Encore Beach Club opened last weekend, and their admission structure has become the subject of some armchair controversy. For those who are not yet aware, admission to the Encore Beach Club is officially $40 for men and $30 for women. They are also charging hispanic people $70 to enter and black people $90. Okay, I'm just kidding about those last two, but can you imagine ... Anyway, my opinion ... Read the full blog post...
That 70’s Post
May 30, 2010
Friday was the first night of "Summer of the '70s" Downtown, and to show support for the effort, I decided to spend a couple of hours patronizing Fremont Street and soaking in the new theme. Before availing myself of the entertainment, however, I had to eat, and this time around I decided to fill up on the Golden Gate's $3.99 "large" shrimp cocktail. Honestly, in my several dozen trips to eat at the Golden Gate, this was the first time I had ever noticed the "large" option, and I am upset at myself for this. Had I paid attention to the menu earlier, I would have been ordering one of these instead of two of the cheaper offerings. The bigger cocktail is more appealing to me because the "large" shrimp are actually large. I'm not sure if they fall into the "jumbo" realm, but they are damn close, and ... Let The Games Begin
May 29, 2010
It's hard to believe that it's already been a year, but today kicked off the 2010 World Series of Poker. Of course, the Main Event still doesn't begin for another month, but it feels like only yesterday that I was perusing the halls of the 2009 event. When I went over to the Rio to check out the preliminary tournaments today, I ran into a situation which I had heard about, but had never witnessed first-hand. Standing outside near the red carpet, random grinders were cutting deals with other players and benefactors. People were showing up to the event without money and were trying to get staked on the spot. It kind of reminded me of trying to get picked for dodgeball. One guy was saying "I came in 4th at the blah blah tournament last month", and another guy was pimping his son and trying to get him into a tournament. ... Read the full blog post...
Freaky Friday
May 23, 2010
Located in an unimpressive building on Industrial Road, only a block from the Trump Tower, sits a somewhat unlikely Las Vegas attraction. The Erotic Heritage Museum has been around for awhile, but for some reason, I've always just assumed that the place was a trap. I envisioned going inside, staring at a couple of posters on a wall, and then being herded into a strip club where I would be mercilessly hustled for lapdances until I was able to summon my inner ninja to stun my attackers and slip out the back door. It is entirely possible that I have lived in this town for too long, because I no longer trust anyone or anything here, and my natural assumption is that everything is a complete scam. More often than not, I'm correct ("Hey, how long are you in town for? Do you want to see a show?"), but after hearing some ... Read the full blog post...
Summer of the ’70s
May 17, 2010
After the very successful "Summer of '69" effort, I was strongly hoping that Fremont Street would bring us another theme this year, and it appears that I will be getting my wish: It's going to be 102 days of dy-no-mite surprises as Fremont Street Experience brings you the "Summer of the '70s" festival and free concert series. Headlining bands as well as weekly tribute bands will fill downtown with sounds of the '70s including disco, classic rock and more. Although I started getting burned out on tie-dye halfway through the summer, when all was said and done, I thought that what Fremont did last year was brilliant. The free concerts, costumes, and custom light shows really added an element of fun to Downtown that surprised me. Before the Summer of '69 theme kicked off, frankly, I was skeptical. The whole thing just seemed too corny, and when I first heard about it, I ... Read the full blog post...
Gnarly and the Chocolate Factory
May 7, 2010
For the first time ever, yesterday, I embarked on a trip to the famous Ethel M Chocolate Factory. For those of you who are unaware, Ethel M is kind of a big deal for those who like sweets. It is a gourmet candy factory which just happens to be located about 10 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, and is a mecca for chocolate lovers from all over the country. Given its popularity, it's somewhat odd that I had never been to Ethel's before. The reason for this is that I am not a huge chocolate lover. I like it just fine, but I'm generally not willing to brave travelling to Henderson to consume it. Having kids, however, means that what you want is often completely and utterly irrelevant. You are going to do and pay for whatever you are told to do and pay for. It's a lot like being an ... Read the full blog post...
Gay Pride 2010
May 2, 2010
Last night Downtown Las Vegas once again hosted the Gay Pride parade, or as Steve Jobs likes to call it, "Macworld 2010". Frankly, I have lost count of the number of Gay Pride parades that I have attended. In both DC and NYC, they were kind of a tradition. Growing up in these two towns, I always had a large number of homosexual friends, colleagues, and acquaintances -- and I am really no stranger to the culture. Well, except for the anal sex thing. At least that's what I repeat to myself when I cry in the shower. As parades go, Gay Pride gigs are really the only ones that are not completely boring. I once attended the Rose Parade in Pasadena, and there is not enough methamphetamine in the world that could keep me awake for it a second time. Marching lesbians and over-the-top drag queen routines, however, have always been a ... Read the full blog post...
Timberrrrrrr!
April 18, 2010
Well, it's that time of year. The first 90-degree weekend (or close to it), and the first reality check that the hellish Vegas Summer is only a few weeks away. While this realization stresses me, I am consoling myself with the following fact: In only 5 short months, it's once again going to be October. If I can make it through the next 150 days, then I will have a solid 180 days as a reward (October through March in Vegas is really quite livable). Since I have a few people staying on the "Mandalay Mile" (the string of continuous MGM/Mirage properties south of Tropicana Ave.) this weekend, I have made the trip back and forth to this area a couple of times already, and I will make the trip at least once more before the weekend is over. Now, every cloud has its silver lining, and in Las Vegas, the silver lining to ... Read the full blog post...
