Strip shut down for collector cars

October 9, 2009

It was a beautiful fall day last Wednesday, the perfect kind of day to walk down the strip and see the Barrett-Jackson auction’s collector cars drive down Las Vegas Boulevard. I hung out on the balcony at Margaritaville to watch the cars drive by on their way to Mandalay Bay Casino for the auction. I gathered around a couple of tourists and let them know what was going on. I was hoping they’d all come down at once, sort of two by two in a cluster or something, but they were more like one at a time. The police had closed the Strip for the occasion and escorted them down to the casino’s warehouse. The cars were gorgeous. There were all kinds of them, from the Model T type to the modern sports car. Every one of them was in perfect condition with their new wax jobs gleaming ... Read the full blog post...

Real dinosaurs sold at the Venetian Casino

October 5, 2009

The day finally arrived for the Natural History auction at the Venetian Casino. I’ve been waiting a long time to see this action. Real, honest to goodness, dinosaur skeletons were on the auction block. And it happened in Las Vegas! Unlike the jewelry auction, there was hardly an empty chair in the former Guggenheim Museum in the Venetian Casino on this day. There were even people standing in the back of the room throughout the auction. The action started with fossilized leaves and small fish, but it got to the good stuff rather quickly. There were only 42 lots to sell and “Samson”, the T. Rex, was number twenty-three. In speaking with Tom Lindgren, the Co-Director of Natural History at Bonhams & Butterfields, he had told me he thought the bidding could go as high as ten million dollars. A less important discovery, “Sue”, another Tyrannosaurus rex ... Read the full blog post...

Loads of Bling Sold at the Venetian

September 21, 2009

Today was the Salon Jewelry auction by Bonhams & Butterfields at the Venetian in Las Vegas. So many totally awesome items were for sale. There were plenty of rings, watches of all types, necklaces, brooches and oddball pins. I watched for a couple of hours to get a feel for how this works. The one I’m really looking forward to is the Natural History auction where they are going to sell “Samson”, the Tyrannosaurs Rex, a Wooly Mammoth and a whole lot of other fossils and skeletons. That will take place on October 3rd, 2009. This auction was tied in with both Los Angeles and San Francisco. People were bidding live even though they were not physically present. Each location had their own auctioneer. The auctioneers would rotate with one leading the auction from Las Vegas, then they would switch. There were ... Read the full blog post...

A morning drive down the Las Vegas Strip

September 18, 2009

I took a little drive down the strip this morning because I needed to go to the Bellagio Casino for something. I’ll get into that in a later story. I enjoy driving on the Vegas strip in the mornings. It is so car free! It isn’t really, there are plenty of cars in the morning but you can actually get somewhere. They aren’t all jammed up and dodging ambulances. Plus, in the mornings I can always park in my favorite area in the Bellagio parking garage. It is right near the door on the ground level. Call me lazy, but I really look forward to that spot. It is such an easy in and easy out. I love it. The problem with the Bellagio self parking is getting to the Bellagio self parking. In the evenings there is a very, very long ... Much Bling going to the auction block in Las Vegas

September 8, 2009

The ancient fossils and dinosaur skeletons aren’t the only thing Bonhams and Butterfields will be auctioning, there will be lots of jewelry and watches too! The Salon Jewelry auction will be held on September 21, 2009, at 1pm at the Venetian in Las Vegas. It will be simulcast in San Francisco and Los Angeles. When I previewed the fossils I couldn’t help but notice all those beautiful, colorful, sparkly, shiny things in the jewelry cases. I tried to walk past and did manage to stay away for a while, but hey, come on, I’m a girl. I ended up back at the pretty things before I left. I was strolling through by fingertips on the case glass, admiring all those beautiful and unusual rings, bracelets, necklaces and pins. Michael Larsen, the Senior Watch Specialist for Bonhams & Butterfields noticed my struggle with my camera. He offered ... Read the full blog post...

So a Wooly Mammoth and T-Rex walk into a casino

September 6, 2009

Bonhams & Butterfields Auction has set up a mini-museum inside the old Guggenheim Hermitage Museum inside the Venetian Casino. They will be holding an auction on October 3rd, 2009. Besides auctioning off a 66-million year old Tyrannosaurex skeleton named “Samson”, there are lots and lots of other way cool fossils. This make-shift museum is going to be open to the public starting September 18th. It only costs $6.00 per person to go inside and see this incredibly cool stuff. I went inside a couple of days ago and Tom Lindgren, from Bonhams showed me around. He’s their Natural History Specialist and was in charge of unpacking and setting up these fossils. If you ever need to know which bone connects to another, I guess he’s your man. Tom and I hung around the huge T-Rex, one of the largest ever found to date. He told me all ... A New Roulette Betting Option in Vegas

September 1, 2009

There is a new game of Roulette at The Orleans Casino in Las Vegas. The creator of table games, Casino Gaming, LLC, came up with this new idea. They have also created the Blackjack betting option Automatic Win™ and the craps betting option 7 Point 7™. This new betting option is called COLORS and The Orleans is the first casino in Las Vegas to have it. COLORS allows you to bet that either red or black will hit three consecutive times in a row. The normal Roulette rules do still apply, you just have an this additional option of betting that the red or black will hit three times in a row. If your chosen color does win three times in a row then you are paid 8 to 1. So, if you bet $10 that Red will come up three times and it does, then you are ... Read the full blog post...

Las Vegas Back in the Day

August 25, 2009

The first time I ever set my foot down in Las Vegas, is when I exited my boyfriend's beat up, olive green, VW Bug, in 1975. I graduated High School that year. As the custom was in Southern California at the time, you all piled in buses and went to Disneyland. Being the more 'interesting' type of kid at seventeen, I took off for Vegas with my first love. He had a brother living there and we thought we'd have some fun with him and his wife for a few days in Fabulous Las Vegas. It has been a very long time really and my memories have faded, but I do remember still some of the good stuff of the trip. The boyfriend, well, let's just say I try to block that memory. I learned some real lessons there. Vegas, on the other hand, ... Read the full blog post...

A Luxor Overnight

August 17, 2009

I spent the night at the Luxor a few nights ago. I got a room in the East Tower for the night. It was great to see a show and just go to my room and fall into bed just like you tourists get to! The Luxor has some really interesting exhibits going on all the time. I really enjoyed the Titanic exhibit when I saw it earlier this year, although it left me a bit bummed out. They do a good job of showing you some of the reality of it all. I haven’t been in The Body’s exhibit because I took a biology course at the University of Utah and I’m afraid between the cadavers in the lab and also doing my duty on the Havre Kadisha committee, I think I’ve seen all the dead bodies I’m in the mood for just now. ... And then our Mayor chugged it! Happy Birthday

August 1, 2009

As you may remember, I went to the Las Vegas’s Mayor’s birthday party a couple of weeks ago. I went that night because someone on the news said it was ‘this Friday’. I doubled checked and emailed a news anchor… who shall remain nameless…. But it starts with JA and ends with SON…. And he told me exactly where I should go to attend this party with no mention of it being weeks away. Anyway, after much trial and tribulation, and a kind soul helping me out on Twitter, I discovered it wasn’t that night. His birthday party was going to happen on July 31st. I was a couple of weeks early, terribly rude of me. Thank God for Twitter, I tell ya. So I went to our mayor’s big birthday bash, again! Only this time, everyone else did too! And it was cool. The ... Read the full blog post...
