"Do you have a cigarette?" "Can you spare any change?" "Hey man, help me get a sandwich." This was not how I wanted my Saturday night to begin. I've been having such a decent time on Fremont Street the past few weeks that I've come to take the positive vibe for granted. Last night, however, the streak sort of came to an end. I'm not sure if it was the heat, the booze, or a combination thereof, but last night on Fremont Street there were a few shouting matches, a few fisticuffs, and worst of all ... a busload of panhandlers. Literally. A few weeks ago, someone emailed me with regards to the new influx of posers on LVB. The person informed me that the LAPD was cracking down on the posers along Hollywood Boulevard, and that it was getting too difficult for them to work the streets in LA. Instead of sticking around Hollywood, ... Read the full blog post...
Decisions, Decisions
June 18, 2010
An old friend stayed Downtown for two nights this week, and when I say "old friend", I literally mean that the man is so old that were he to die of a heart attack tomorrow, people would say "it's about damn time." Seriously, this guy is in his 70's, he drinks every night, smokes non-stop, and claims to still hire prostitutes -- although I personally have some doubts as to the veracity of this claim. At his age, were he to engage in coitus with a hooker, it would probably look a lot like pushing a shoestring through the Lincoln Tunnel. Anyway, I decided to drop by and see the old prune for about half an hour yesterday, but beforehand, I decided to spend some time in the Golden Nugget. Why the Golden Nugget you ask? (I know you didn't ask, it was rhetorical) Because it's the official Las Vegas casino for ... Read the full blog post...
Boogie Nights
June 14, 2010
Another weekend has come and gone, and once again, I spent most of it at the "Summer of the '70s" on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas. This weekend, I had kind of a special reason for dividing my time in such a unilateral manner. A KISS Tribute band was playing two nights consecutively, and I wanted to catch at least some of their performance on both nights. I still remember almost every moment of the KISS revolution from when I was but a child. If you were in elementary school from roughly 1974-1979, you were likely saturated with KISS music and imagery every day in the hallways. Every red-blooded boy owned at least Destroyer and Dynasty, and KISS lunchboxes and posters were fairly common. I even remember this one kid who would play air guitar during lunch, stick packets of ketchup in his mouth and bite down on them ... ejecting "blood" ... Read the full blog post...
That 70’s Post
May 30, 2010
Friday was the first night of "Summer of the '70s" Downtown, and to show support for the effort, I decided to spend a couple of hours patronizing Fremont Street and soaking in the new theme. Before availing myself of the entertainment, however, I had to eat, and this time around I decided to fill up on the Golden Gate's $3.99 "large" shrimp cocktail. Honestly, in my several dozen trips to eat at the Golden Gate, this was the first time I had ever noticed the "large" option, and I am upset at myself for this. Had I paid attention to the menu earlier, I would have been ordering one of these instead of two of the cheaper offerings. The bigger cocktail is more appealing to me because the "large" shrimp are actually large. I'm not sure if they fall into the "jumbo" realm, but they are damn close, and ... The Lady Luck Revival
May 27, 2010
Lady Luck is a somewhat imposing Downtown casino that was shuttered in 2006, expected to re-open a year later ... yet still sits dormant. Over the last year or so, I've received numerous inquiries into the state of affairs at the Lady Luck. Unfortunately, to all of the inquiries I have received, my answer has always been the same: I don't know. While I am acquainted with a fair number of people who work in casinos which are actually open, I honestly wouldn't know who to contact when it comes to projects which are in the works. Even if I did know who to contact, I doubt I would do so. There is a huge difference between a "blogger" and a reporter. A blogger writes a web log of his/her personal experiences and opinions, while a reporter investigates facts and is assigned to stories of which he/she may ... Read the full blog post...
Where’s The Gambling?
May 21, 2010
How about a round of applause for a little more Downtown redevelopment ... The Las Vegas City Council today unanimously approved leasing a city-owned, three-story former retail store to a pair of developers who hope to turn it into a nightclub that will help light up downtown's Fremont East District. The building, at the southeast corner of Fremont Street and Sixth Street, is envisioned to have a nightclub within about a year to a year and a half, and will also be used for retail space and condominiums, according to the developers. Terry Caudill, who owns the Four Queens and Binion's casinos, and Carlos "Big Daddy" Adley and his wife, Ava Berman Adley, who own the Velvet Margarita in Hollywood, have formed a limited liability corporation to lease the property, called 601 Fremont LLC. "We're going to bring in some of the top retail, restaurant and amenities, literally in the country to this spot," ... Read the full blog post...
Summer of the ’70s
May 17, 2010
After the very successful "Summer of '69" effort, I was strongly hoping that Fremont Street would bring us another theme this year, and it appears that I will be getting my wish: It's going to be 102 days of dy-no-mite surprises as Fremont Street Experience brings you the "Summer of the '70s" festival and free concert series. Headlining bands as well as weekly tribute bands will fill downtown with sounds of the '70s including disco, classic rock and more. Although I started getting burned out on tie-dye halfway through the summer, when all was said and done, I thought that what Fremont did last year was brilliant. The free concerts, costumes, and custom light shows really added an element of fun to Downtown that surprised me. Before the Summer of '69 theme kicked off, frankly, I was skeptical. The whole thing just seemed too corny, and when I first heard about it, I ... Read the full blog post...
A Tale of Two Cocktails
May 5, 2010
Last night I had to deliver a package to someone staying in a Downtown hotel (it's a long story, and no, the contents were not illegal) ... and while there, I found myself suffering from hunger. In the past month, I've lost 8-10 pounds, and this morning I had to punch an extra hole in my belt just to keep my pants from falling down. I've been so busy, that on some days, I simply forget to eat. I've never been a terribly food-oriented person, and when I was in my teens and 20's, I would have to make a point to eat just so I would not be too underweight. Hell, I often looked like I had a heroin habit even when I didn't have a heroin habit. Now that I am a 41 year-old, 190lb fatfuck, I no longer have to worry about gaining weight, but I am still not ... Read the full blog post...
Gay Pride 2010
May 2, 2010
Last night Downtown Las Vegas once again hosted the Gay Pride parade, or as Steve Jobs likes to call it, "Macworld 2010". Frankly, I have lost count of the number of Gay Pride parades that I have attended. In both DC and NYC, they were kind of a tradition. Growing up in these two towns, I always had a large number of homosexual friends, colleagues, and acquaintances -- and I am really no stranger to the culture. Well, except for the anal sex thing. At least that's what I repeat to myself when I cry in the shower. As parades go, Gay Pride gigs are really the only ones that are not completely boring. I once attended the Rose Parade in Pasadena, and there is not enough methamphetamine in the world that could keep me awake for it a second time. Marching lesbians and over-the-top drag queen routines, however, have always been a ... Read the full blog post...
Greeding The Meter
April 27, 2010
Recently, several green parking meters have popped up in and around Downtown Las Vegas, but since I don't pay to park, I didn't realize what they were until they began making headlines. Las Vegas has set up refurbished parking meters as "donation stations" where people can donate spare change to help the city's homeless people. Mayor Oscar Goodman and City Council members Steve Wolfson, Ricki Barlow and Lois Tarkanian christened one of the stations in front of City Hall on Monday. Wolfson, who said he frequently gives money to panhandlers around the Regional Justice Center, said the program is a better way to give money to homeless people. "It's going to guarantee that the money ... provides for the real needs for our homeless," he said. The city of Las Vegas will maintain the meters, with the money passing through the city's Homeless Services program to pay for shelter, transportation and other needs. The meters ...
