The Best of The Worst
November 11, 2009
“Maybe that Rex guy isn't so stupid after all.” The above words have never been said, but one of these days, they just might. No they won't. After a year and a half of holding out, I finally joined the “we are close to a bottom” chorus last month, and September's numbers bode reasonably well for this prediction. Even though September of 2009 saw a 3.5% decline in gaming win, which represented the 22nd straight month of negative numbers, it was the smallest decline since June of 2008. Labor Day is getting some credit for the unhideous numbers because the holiday fell in September of this year instead of August like the year prior, so we will need another month for confirmation of a trend. Things were not quite as optimistic for Downtown Las Vegas which was off nearly 9%. There was one hell of a crowd Downtown during the Labor Day weekend, but things did visibly ... Shame On Everyone
October 26, 2009
It probably comes as no great surprise to anyone, but Nevada now has the second highest jobless rate in the nation, trailing only Michigan … a state which seems to perpetually hold the top spot. The 1-2 ranking does lend credence to the notion of Las Vegas being the new Detroit, but that's a different conversation. As Nevada's unemployment rate continues to increase, a new phenomenon has taken hold in the Valley. Actually, it's not so much a “new” phenomenon (they've always been here) as it is a common tactic which appears to be enjoying a surge in popularity. As each recessionary month passes, and as more people lack jobs to report to, it has become a regular sight to see “Shame on You” campaigns in front of every type of business imaginable. Hotels, retail stores, hospitals, casinos, hell … a couple of weeks ago there was a “shame campaign” in front of the Church ... Read the full blog post...
Vegas Reaches For Its Bottom
October 13, 2009
Columbus Day used to be my favorite holiday of the year. Few people are aware of this, but one of the objectives of good old Chris was to discover a safe oceanic route to transport opium from Eastern Asia to the European colonies. I've searched the annals of history from front to back, and quite frankly, I've yet to run across a more noble cause than this. Lately, my enthusiasm for the holiday has waned, however. I feel pressured to buy more gifts each year, and I feel that people have totally forgotten what the Columbus spirit is all about. Opium. The day has become just a bit too commercial. Anyway, given that this was a three day weekend, I was surprised that there weren't a few more people out and about. Both The Strip and Downtown were decidedly moderate, but by no means representative of a typical Monday off. New Vegas numbers are out ... Read the full blog post...
The Great Vegas Land Shortage
August 14, 2009
During my drive to the M Resort earlier this week, I actually made it a point to take several photographs of nothing along the way. While it may sound silly, I am actually quite serious. These photographs of nothing are very important to me. When I fly around the Vegas Valley, or when I take a drive more than 5 miles from the city's core, I try to take photos of the large pockets of vacant land that I see along the way. Why? To remind myself that no matter what the Las Vegas real estate industry says ... no matter how much they jump up and down and scream themselves purple about how our real estate market has bottomed and must go up … I can always look at my photographic folder aptly named “/users/rex/desktop/nothing” as irrefutable proof that there is not now, never has been, and never will be a Las Vegas ... One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
August 11, 2009
It's that time of the month. The time of month when I have to go to the drug store to buy large pads, a bottle of Midol, and several containers of vinegar . That's right, it's time to clean the oven. A brillo pad dipped in vinegar will get out even the toughest stain, but sometimes the smell gives me a headache. Thank god for the pain relieving properties of Midol. This month, however, I am going to save at least one bottle of vinegar, put a special applicator tip on it, and march over to the offices of the LVCVA. After the latest round of numbers, our fine city may need a little “internal cleaning”. That's right, the never ending stream of “read 'em and weep” stats are out. While Las Vegas was throwing minor celebrations and calling a bottom because revenue was “only” down six percent in May, numbers from June have just been ... Read the full blog post...
Skid Row of Vegas
August 4, 2009
In another installment of the “neighborhood series”, I decided to hit one of the places that few tourists know about, and frankly, most of Las Vegas wants to keep it that way. That fact of the matter is, yes Virginia … Las Vegas does have a Skid Row. Neighborhoods like Skid Row are not unfamiliar to me at all. I've lived in mostly urban areas for my entire life, and I actually lived “on” Skid Row in Los Angeles for a number years, and my rapport with the surrounding community was actually quite good. While I did not live in a tent on the street myself, many years ago I was able to procure a “loft” (a/k/a the corner of an old 1920's office building converted to residential use) on the East Side of Downtown LA for a monthly cost that was practically free. Coming from the East Coast, I thought the ... Read the full blog post...
Fiddling While Vegas Burns
July 24, 2009
When I started “blogging” (for lack of a better word), my intent was to be able to write my blog in a vacuum if I so desired. What this meant was that if every other Vegas website, blog, newspaper, TV station, PR department and wire service went out of business and completely vanished overnight … I would be able to continue my blog more or less as-is. I would not be at the whim of slow news weeks and reports from other people. I could walk out my front door with a camera, a laptop, a few bucks and a bottle of penicillin and do my own thing in a complete informational void. What I came back with may or may not be even remotely interesting, but at least it was my own. I think I have at least partially succeeded. I certainly don't sit around and wait for news to break ... The Currency of Las Vegas
June 25, 2009
Brooklyn, New York – about 20 years ago. I emerge from an F train station at about 3:00am with a cheap Fender guitar in a soft gig bag strapped across my back. As I walk along the sidewalk, I realize that I have a very bad case of the munchies. I also have bloodshot eyes and my mouth is incredibly dry. Given that I am on my way home from Bible Study, I have no idea why I find myself in this particular state. I typically use my guitar to accompany the church pianist during late night hymns, and I often stop to serenade sick children, the elderly, and the underprivileged with uplifting songs on my way home … so this may explain my mild disorientation and hunger. Fortunately for me, there is a small bodega about a block away that never truly closes, and I stumble … I mean … I walk ... Read the full blog post...
The Fontainebleau Declares Bankruptcy
June 9, 2009
Well, the writing was on the wall, and I doubt this will surprise or shock anyone. I suppose this would fall under “Breaking News”, and I don't usually get into the breaking news game … but this one effects me somewhat directly given that I can throw a rock three times and hit the place. I just found out mere moments ago that The Fontainebleau has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. I, my neighbors, and pretty much everyone in this town was hoping beyond hope that we read the scrawled words “failure” incorrectly, and it was possible that things could turn around, but it looks a bit bleak right now. It's been nearly a month since I have seen a full team of workers present at the Fblue site, and little to no visible improvement has been made to the structure in that time. I happened to drop by and took a full ... Read the full blog post...
Vegas Gamblers Are Getting Luckier
June 5, 2009
Significantly luckier, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The numbers are in, and Nevada's April gaming win is down over 14% from the same time last year. Since the recession “officially” started last March according to some sources, our monthly revenue was supposed to begin reaching parity with 2008 beginning this Spring. So what happened? According to the Gaming Control Board, you have been winning more, and the casino has been winning less. The casino's “gross win” (the win amount excluding operating costs and deductions) is down. Big time. “The overall amount of money wagered was about the same as it was in April 2008, but casinos were unlucky in what they held this April”, according to Frank Streshley, an analyst with the Gaming Board. So how well have you, the Vegas gambler, supposedly been doing? Casino Slot win is down 5%; Casino Baccarat win is down 12%; Casino Roulette win ... Read the full blog post...
