The Downtown Triple Crown
May 2, 2009
Yesterday, three separate events happened to coincide in Downtown on the very same day. The events were First Friday, the Farmer's Market, and the Gay Pride Parade. These three events have never co-existed before … and it made for some interesting logistical issues with regards to getting around. Despite the large number of road closures and detours going on last night, I was able to hit all three. Luckily, I have my own “shortcuts”. Since they involve alleys and even alternative modes of transit, these are tricks your cab driver will probably not be familiar with, but what can I say … they work for me. First up was The Farmer's Market. Last week was a dry run, but this week was the Grand Opening. In addition to vendors this week, they also had live entertainment. Again, this is probably not terribly interesting to tourists, but on a personal level I'll probably hit the ... Read the full blog post...
Alta Drive
April 30, 2009
First of all, for those of you who have not heard, this week MGM/Mirage secured financing to complete City Center. We are still waiting on the Fontainebleau's financing issue, but Las Vegas is guaranteed that at least one project will open by the end of the year. I've been over both of these projects ad-nauseum this month, so I have nothing to add other than … I hope they both open and succeed. I also doubt that this completely puts an end to the City Center drama (as a matter of fact there is a construction code issue hanging over the place), but we'll see. Anyway ... A couple of months ago while doing the “neighborhood series” where I toured through one inner-city neighborhood after another, I mentioned that we did have neighborhoods that were upscale, unique, and not completely suburban and cookie-cutter. The two that sprang immediately to mind were Sunrise Mountain and Alta ... Read the full blog post...
Las Vegas … We Have Good Food Here
April 8, 2009
I'm psychic. I know, it's hard to believe, but I am going to prove it to you. Think of a town in the USA. Any town. Go ahead, take some time to think of a random one. It doesn't matter if you have been there or not. As long as it's not too obscure, and most people have heard of it … it will suffice. Got it? Write it down. The next time you come to Vegas and find yourself surrounded by at least ten other tourists, simply mention the town that you have written. Say something along the lines of “I was in XYZ town last year”. Right now, well in advance, I am going to tell you exactly the first thing you will hear as soon as you are done speaking. “They have good food there!” Somebody will say it. I promise. It doesn't matter how crappy the town is, or how big of a dump it ... Read the full blog post...
Dinner In The Sky
March 21, 2009
Las Vegas has a brand new attraction. It's called “Dinner in the Sky”. I first heard about this last year, and I have been keeping very close tabs on it. I'm kind of a height junkie. I like flying in airplanes and helicopters, I like going up in The Stratosphere Tower, I like the Eiffel Tower and Foundation Room, I like Sunrise Mountain … I just really like elevated views. I'm not afraid of heights, I actually seek them out. Therefore, when I first heard about this, it seemed right up my alley. Now, the premise of this thing is a little odd, so you are going to have to keep an open mind. The gist of Dinner in The Sky is that you put a dinner table on a platform. Then, you put chefs in the center of the dinner table. Then, you seat 20 or so people around the dinner table, ... Read the full blog post...
Would You Like Fries With That?
December 12, 2008
The Las Vegas tourist is about to start hearing that phrase more often. Just when you thought the Encore opening was going to be the largest event in Las Vegas this year … BAM … Ronald McDonald comes in and steals Steve Wynn's thunder by opening a new restaurant a mere half mile from Steve's newest creation. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole Encore thing was postponed now, as the new hotel is going to be nothing short of anticlimactic at this point. Honestly, I never thought that I would write a post about McDonald's, much less make a five minute video about a trip to one, however, today … I am doing both. Why? Because a new McDonald's named Viva McDonald's opened on the Las Vegas Strip, and there is a large amount of media interest in the story. Why? Because this is the largest McDonald's in the world. That's right … not only can Las ... Read the full blog post...
Anyone Want To Buy A Giant Cup?
December 8, 2008
I have interesting news to report. Sexxpresso has moved. I just happened to be in the neighborhood of Flamingo and Swenson this morning, and decided to stop by the place. It has a real estate sign hanging on it, and they had already begun taking down the picture of the girl from the west side of the building. I assumed that it was yet another victim of the crappy economy, and I was frankly, disappointed. My first thought was that the location, a nondescript strip mall 2 miles East of The Strip had destroyed the business. Honestly, it was in a terrible location. I always thought that it was their achilles heel. Well, apparently they agreed with me. When I got home, I looked up their site to see what had caused the demise of the scantily-clad coffee shop, and I learned that they did not exactly close … but they have moved down to The Strip. The ... Read the full blog post...
I "Experienced" Minus 5
November 8, 2008
I met up with someone yesterday at the Mandalay Bay, and we both decided to check out the new "Minus 5 Ice Lounge" that opened last month. Minus 5 is actually on the Mandalay Place overpass between the Luxor and Mandalay. Since it is the first establishment up the escalator, it's only about a one minute walk from the House of Blues, and maybe a 90 second walk from the Poker Room. How was the joint? It was pretty cool ... literally. The inside bar is -5 degrees Celsius ... which is 23 degrees Fahrenheit. While 23 degrees doesn't sound terribly cold, coming off of 108 degree summer days just months ago, and sitting in the 80's for most of the past month ... it was a bit of a surprise to the system. My trips to the East Coast don't usually put me in these temps either, and I try to avoid air travel ... Read the full blog post...
