Selling Your Soul

There is one aspect of Rexville that people have been asking me to cover for roughly the past six months, but I have so far resisted doing so. At least in-depth. In addition to weekly motels, wedding chapels, drug sales, streetwalkers-r-us, tattoo parlors, strip clubs, and bail bonds places ... the next most prominent business type in the neighborhood would probably be pawn shops. I don't think I've ever seen a two-square-mile area in the world with more pawn shops than Rexville. Unfortunately, these are probably the businesses in which I am the least interested. Something about pawn shops have always depressed me. They represent the aspect of capitalism that I am the least fond of. Basically, one man's misfortune is another's gain. I generally don't think well of payday loan places, or realtors who take customers on tours of houses where the occupants have just been thrown on the street. I ... Read the full blog post...
Season’s Greetings
December 25, 2009
For the very first time, I visited Town Square this year for their Christmas festivities and it was actually quite enjoyable. The "town" was quite crowded, and we even got to enjoy a psuedo-white Christmas. At 7pm (Sun thru Thur) and 8pm (Fri and Sat), Town Square uses snow machines to blanket the central Christmas tree, and for 10 minutes it actually feels like you are somewhere, anywhere, other than Las Vegas. Especially with last night's temperatures in the 30's. Afterward, there was a large amount of Christmas shopping, window shopping, coffee sipping, and the place just felt alive as people from all ages and all walks of life milled about and seemed to be having a good time. I can't help but feel that Town Square is everything City Center promised to be, but isn't. Well except for the casino and hotels. Anyway, after playing in the "snow" and doing some shopping, we ... Tons of Silver
December 21, 2009
After two weeks of City Center/Bellagio/City Center/Sahara/City Center/Planet Hollywood/City Center (note the pattern), I decided to get out of town this weekend. Fortunately, when your sphere-of-being is the geographic area between Fremont Street and the Mandalay Bay, "getting out of town" requires little more than crossing the I-15. On Saturday morning, I gave serious consideration as to my casino choice of the day. I didn't just want to go someplace far. Red Rock Station is "far", but I've already been there a hundred times. I wanted to go someplace unfamiliar. A place with a different flavor. A place to lift the burnout of PR speak, over-saturation, and talking points. A place that didn't have a Twitter account. A place void of scenesters, trendsters, and those who are hipper-than-thou. Someplace that was not on the radar of a single talking head within a 100 mile radius. I double clicked the ever-present Las Vegas casino ... Read the full blog post...
City Center II: Crystal Clear
December 3, 2009
Well, it was bound to happen. My first shrug of Vegas 3.0. I went, I saw, I conquered ... a shopping mall. Okay, perhaps "conquered" is a strong word but it sounds better than "and then went home". Crystals, the new City Center shopping mall opened today, and I spent about two hours checking the place out. The verdict? Well, I may as well have been on a different planet. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice mall. Very nice. Far too nice for me apparently. As I was led on a tour of the property, I was greeted with the following stores (among others): Louis Vuitton. I've heard of it, but never set foot inside of one. I'm not even sure what they sell. Assouline. "Using human feces to power the cars of tomorrow!" Seriously, never heard of it. Ilori. Never heard of it. Bally. I hear Slick Rick likes their shoes, but I thought they made pinball machines. Mikimoto. The new ... Read the full blog post...
Playing The Palazzo
April 29, 2009
Given that there is an absolute dearth of “big” information coming from The Strip over the past couple of months, and given that there is an even larger void of projects which are actually reaching completion, things that would normally be greeted with a collective yawn are now starting to get some interest. Case in point … a new Walgreens opened up directly adjacent to the Palazzo. Yeah, Walgreens. The kind of store you find in any city in the USA. Despite its ubiquity, after I made a live update yesterday, I arrived home to an assortment of emails asking about the place: “Do they have booze?” “Do they have a pharmacy?” “Does it look the same or is there anything unique about it?” I could not answer the questions because none of these things seemed important to me. I simply looked at the outside of the store, snapped a shot, and moved on. As it ... Read the full blog post...
Hipster Paradise in the Heart of Downtown
April 27, 2009
Shopping. It's a word that strikes fear into the hearts of men, and instantly erects the nipples of all females who hear it. While I avoid this endeavor whenever possible, there are times when it must be done. When I do shop, I try to do it at the least expensive places possible. As a matter of fact, the shoes that I wear on a day-to-day basis were purchased at the 99 cent store for … 99 cents. I am not joking. They are plastic/rubber, and I can wash the dog excrement and used condoms off of the bottom of them with a garden hose. What more can you ask for? To be honest, I have not purchased “good” clothing for myself in … well … ever. If you ever see me wearing anything nice, or brand name, you can be 100% certain that it was a gift. By a female. Usually out ... Read the full blog post...
