Happy iDay Part 2

June 25, 2010

Anyway, since he got such a weird reaction from the crowd, I stood in place as he walked in my direction so that I could give him some affirmation. He was a Hispanic guy, maybe mid-30's, with the iPhone in one hand and two kids flanking him. The kids were clamoring for a peek at the device and he was grinning from ear-to-ear. When he got about 10 feet away from me, I said "Congratulations!" and I threw my hands in the air signaling a touchdown. He smiled widely and flashed the phone at me. I was genuinely happy for the douchebag. Contrary to popular belief, I'm really not a dick. I'm actually pretty nice, and this goes double if you are sort of an outcast. Now, this entire time, I noticed that a security guard had been ... Read the full blog post...

Happy iDay Part 1

Unless you've been living under a rock, you are no doubt cognizant of the fact that yesterday was the official launch of the iPhone 4.0. Of course, yours truly went over to Fashion Show Mall specifically to get pictures of the event. Why? Because I needed stock photos of an iPhone launch. As any regular reader is well-aware, I have an obsessive policy of only using photos that belong to me, and after looking through my stash, I realized that I didn't have any iLaunch pictures. As someone who ridicules Apple on a frequent basis, this could not stand. At some point, I'm going to need to photoshop a crowd of Heaven's Gate cult members standing in front of an Apple Store, and I need some kind of photographic footage to start with. Yesterday was my opportunity to get that footage. I arrived at Fashion Show around 9:30am, ... Read the full blog post...

EVO: Footsteps

June 7, 2010

Multi-tasking Modern computers need modern operating systems that multi-task, and the EVO is absolutely a modern computer. Really, we need to stop calling these devices "phones".  I've made two phone calls since I have received my EVO, and both of them lasted under 2 minutes.  The fact that these machines have phone capabilities is almost an afterthought.  These devices are not phones, they are handheld computers.  Whether you call them "palmtops", "handhelds", or something else is not terribly important, but I think everyone should stop calling them "phones".  I mean, I use my 24" desktop computer/monitor to make Skype calls, but I've never referred to it as my "big phone". As a small, powerful computer, I cannot imagine only being able to have a single task open at any given time. For the past couple of days, I have used my EVO to surf the internet, take pictures, edit pictures, record video, play games, ... Read the full blog post...

EVO: Once

For no particular reason, I am going to start with the negatives: Battery Life Although lithium ion batteries take some time and "conditioning" to reach full capacity, I can already tell that an exhausted battery is going to be a frequent companion of mine.  This is particularly true while using the camera.  While taking photos and recording videos, I was able to "red" the battery in about 4 hours.  When I looked at the Android Battery Meter, it informed me that the camera function had consumed 63% of my battery overall.  As one of the most prolific photobloggers on the planet ... ouch.  Typical users will probably have better results as casual use drains the battery much more slowly, but I will need either a spare battery or an external recharger for "blogging".  Without question, battery life is THE achilles heel of the EVO. The Camera Speaking of the camera, beyond 8' (the range ... Read the full blog post...

EVO: Alive

"Specs don't matter" If you dabble in the tech field at all, you no doubt hear this refrain often.  The interesting thing about this saying is that it always comes from the same group of people. Apple users. You see, only in the reality distortion field of the iPerson does this phrase make any sense.  The rest of us are acutely aware that computers are all about specs. How fast can your computer execute instructions? How much data can it hold? What kind of physical media can it handle? Everything above is primarily determined by one thing: Specs. Because of this, when it comes to computers, nothing matters more than do specs. "Well Rex, specs don't make a computer elegant and usable!  Specs have nothing to do with your overall computing experience." Of course they do.  Anyone who uses an 8 year old computer with 512MB of RAM today will tell you that their computer is almost completely unusable. ... Read the full blog post...

Bad Religion (Part 2)

April 4, 2010

Unfortunately, in my opinion, Apple is ratcheting up their exploitation of this demographic.  The iPad is a product borne of hubris and "we can sell these idiots anything" overconfidence.  It is, in my opinion, a social experiment by Apple to test the limits of just how ridiculously brainwashed their most loyal customers really are. I think, however, that Apple may be pushing it too far.  I think this might finally be the day that they have overplayed their hand. Because of this, I am considering doing something that I almost never do.  I am considering betting on the predomination of common sense. You see, I think it's finally happened.  I believe, that in 2010, Apple has officially jumped the shark.  Despite all of the talking heads on TV and all of the members of the lapdog press, I think that every non-hipster on the planet is going to take a look at this ... Bad Religion (Part 1)

Well, one of the most anticipated days in tech history has finally arrived, and even though I had no intention of doing so, I ended up spending some time with the new Apple iPad today. I went to Town Square for the annual Easter Egg Hunt (it wasn't so much a "hunt" as it was a preschool rugby match), and on my way back from the event, I was coaxed inside the Apple Store by one of their employees who was standing outside. Fine, it didn't take a ton of "coaxing".  I suppose I was slightly curious on some level, but her invitation at least gave me an excuse.  I mean, I couldn't just be rude and keep walking.  At least that is what I told myself. When I got inside, I waited for an iPad to free up, and then went to work making sure that my sites rendered properly on the ... Read the full blog post...

Overdriven

March 24, 2010

For the past week, I have been putting a relatively new piece of technology through its paces.  That technology is called the "Overdrive". Unlike standard wireless modems and hotspots which people have been able to use for over a year, the Overdrive is actually a dual-band device which attempts to latch onto a 4G signal when first turned on, and if one cannot be found, rolls back to standard cellular data. While this doesn't sound exciting, it is actually very important for yours truly because regular cellular signals penetrate buildings far better than do 4G signals.  Before this past week, I found myself in constant connectivity black holes in places such as Planet Hollywood and the Imperial Palace.  I once had to endure an hour long wait in the Hash House a Go-Go with no data connection whatsoever.  To me, this was the rough equivalent to being stuck in an elevator.  With ... "Rex, isn't this supposed to be a Las Vegas Blog?" My blogs are not traditional Vegas blogs. I don't try to be the Review Journal, nor do I try to report all the Vegas news that's fit to print.  You already have 500 places to go for that (I recommend typing "Las Vegas" into Google News for all the mainstream news you can handle). Someone once called my blog "The VegasRex Show" and while it sounds narcissistic, it's probably closer to accurate than calling it "The Great Magical I Love Everything About Las Vegas Click Here To Book Great Room Rates" Blog. This is not so much a Las Vegas Blog as it is a blog written by a guy who lives in Las Vegas.  I write about the things I see, hear, and read that interest me.  Since I live smack between The Bellagio and Fremont Street, my observations usually involve Las Vegas, ... The World’s Greatest Smartphone

January 16, 2010

Now that CES is officially in the books, it is time for a definite assessment of the state of technology, and who better to write such an article than yours truly.  The New Year was rough from an electronic standpoint, and I rang in 2010 with a bit of technological discontent. My Blackberry has become too slow, the outages have been too numerous, and because of this I've spent a large part of the last week seeking its replacement.  I swore up and down that I was not going to get another smartphone, but the temptation was too great.  I bought the hype and I got caught up in the buzz.  Droid!  Nexus One!  Samsung HD!  iPhone GS! Here I was, the world's greatest blogger and smartest person in the solar system ... yet I had a laughable Blackberry Curve that I purchased in early 2008.  The only thing ...
