Chicks Hanging Out in the Man Cave
December 14, 2009
Friday night was one of the Las Vegas Weekly’s famous parties. I like to go to those parties now and then. You never know who you’re going to meet and they do know how to put on a nice, fun event. This time the bash was at the new Lagasse’s Stadium. Now, if I had to guess, I never would have guessed that the famous chef Emeril Lagasse would open up a sports book. Emeril seems to be full of surprises for me. But he has opened up a sportsbook, and it is downstairs at the Palazzo. Lagasse’s Stadium opened in September of this year and this was my first time in there. I had to ask where it was because although I’m in the Palazzo a lot these days, I had never seen it. They hide it downstairs. There is an escalator that goes ... Read the full blog post...
Where the Floating Cranberries Come From
December 9, 2009
The Palazzo went with a polar bear and conservation theme this year in their winter décor. They had their winter ritual this evening to celebrate the change in seasons. This display will be up until after the New Year for you to enjoy when you visit. The evening began with the angels riding down the escalator into the waterfall area of the casino. First three beautiful angels came down one by one and then the King and Queen of winter made their entrance. Have you ever wondered how the cranberries get into that fountain every year? Well, it seems there is a magical ritual which happens and I was there this year to see it. While the tourists and Vegas locals sampled hot chocolate drinks and coconut cupcakes, courtesy of the new cupcake and candy store Sweet Surrender, the angels and the Queen poured vases of cranberries into ... My Journey into Crystals at CityCenter
I had some time to kill on Friday night and seeing how I have been wanting to checkout the new Crystals shopping center at CityCenter in Las Vegas, I finally got in there to see how it all turned out. Cyrstals was designed by award winning architect Daniel Libeskind who is most famous for designing the World Trade Center in 2003, and also for the Jewish Museum in Berlin in 1990. The latter project really launched his career and he became a one hundred person firm. Getting to the CityCenter from where I was at Planet Hollywood was a very peculiar experience. I walked to the end of Planet Hollywood outside on the strip side and went down the escalator. You can easily see where access to the walk-over bridge is once you’re on the strip level. I had to fight off a few porn slappers who were ... Read the full blog post...
Fun Stuff to do in Vegas Starting Tonight
December 4, 2009
Here are some fun events that are going on in and around Vegas if you are in town or coming to town soon. Of course, there’s always lots going on in Las Vegas every day and night, but I thought I’d mention a couple of the highlights I’ve come across for you to enjoy. Tonight: Sammy Hagar will rock the strip tonight with his grand opening of Cabo Wabo Cantina! Sammy Hagar has opened his hard rockin’ dining and nightlife experience, Cabo Wabo® Cantina, on the Las Vegas Strip. The two-level, 15,000-square-foot Cantina brings the best of Cabo San Lucas to Vegas, with its prime location at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Cabo Wabo combines Hagar’s signature blend of killer margaritas, flavorful Mexican food and rock ‘n’ roll style, where it is never uncommon to catch the Red Rocker grabbing a bite to eat or jammin’ out a ... Hot Time or NightClub Robbery?
December 2, 2009
Since the problems at the nightclub Prive have been in the news, there is a lot of talk going on about Las Vegas nightclubs. Last summer Prive, located in Planet Hollywood, caught the attention of the law with topless and lewd activity taking place on site, among other violations. They lost their liquor license over the deal and then got it back. Apparently, the cost of the legal fees and fines put the nightclub into bankruptcy. They are still open and the word is that they intend to remain open through it all. Being a local, I hear stories about the nightclubs all the time. I have heard stories about having to pay hundreds of dollars in tips just to get in, get a seat, and it just goes on and on. I sit and listen to this stuff and the only word that comes to mind ... Strip shut down for collector cars
October 9, 2009
It was a beautiful fall day last Wednesday, the perfect kind of day to walk down the strip and see the Barrett-Jackson auction’s collector cars drive down Las Vegas Boulevard. I hung out on the balcony at Margaritaville to watch the cars drive by on their way to Mandalay Bay Casino for the auction. I gathered around a couple of tourists and let them know what was going on. I was hoping they’d all come down at once, sort of two by two in a cluster or something, but they were more like one at a time. The police had closed the Strip for the occasion and escorted them down to the casino’s warehouse. The cars were gorgeous. There were all kinds of them, from the Model T type to the modern sports car. Every one of them was in perfect condition with their new wax jobs gleaming ... Read the full blog post...
Free Laughs
October 7, 2009
I just love comedy and joke writing and all the fun and heartache that goes with that. It is just one of those fascinations of mine. I tried to find a joke writing school but couldn’t find one for just writers. All the schools seem to focus on stand-up. I have no business being on stage and have no interest in that, so I just go to the clubs and talk to the comics in an effort to figure it all out. This mission led me to Bonkerz Comedy Club once again. They were graduating their latest crop of funny people. Graduation night at Bonkerz is free, by the way. It is well worth checking out. Bonkerz Comedy Club is a regular comedy club inside the Palace Station Casino, just off the strip in Las Vegas. Yeah, of OJ Simpson fame, but ... Read the full blog post...
The Bad Boys and Girls of Art
October 6, 2009
I discovered a new art gallery on that First Friday visit I did over the weekend. It’s called just Place and it is owned by Joe Frcho, and a passion of Gina Quaranto. Place is located in the art district of downtown, Las Vegas. Place has four artists in residence and they have space available for three more. One of those artists in residence is Arty Mike, who is the head of the Art Renegades, the current show at Place. Lisa Fields Clark is a Mosaic artist. Gina Quaranto is a long time street artist in Las Vegas and is known for her woeful women art and it is Gina who is the driving force behind the gallery. Jessica Kennedy is a resident artist and running her graphic arts business from this new location. “It is wonderful for me, because I had been in ... Read the full blog post...
The Palazzo's Fall Decorations
October 4, 2009
The Palazzo Casino has put up their autumn decorations and seeing how I needed to be there anyway, I thought it was the perfect time to try out the new camera. The new design started on September 30th and will be up until November 29, 2009. I started in the lobby and worked my over to the waterfall. The Lalique inspired statue in the lobby is draped in the swirling hand-sculpted bronze vine and copper toned leaves. Around the base of the statue are various pumpkin patches with the usual gigantic pumpkins ranging in weights from 300 to 1000 pounds each. You can click on the photos in my blog posts and see a larger version of them. There is a lot of fall color with mums, cattails, tall grasses and various other flowers giving the usual reds, oranges and yellows of fall. The swirling vine is hand-sculpted from steel adorned with fully ... Read the full blog post...
First Friday, Las Vegas's Gallery Stroll
October 2, 2009
I finally went downtown for First Friday. Every first Friday of the month the galleries downtown Las Vegas open their doors and let everyone wander through at night. It is a fairly big deal. Many of the shops blast music or have live musical groups to lure people in. There are people walking around the streets, popping in and out of galleries and having a fun time. For the past couple of days we’ve been experiencing a sudden cool down in the weather. A few days ago it was 100 degrees and then it dropped right down to the 70s over night. So tonight it was pretty cool and it was perfect for an evening autumn walk through the stores. There are all kinds of stores down there. I haven’t been in that area of Las Vegas since I moved here. It has improved since ... Read the full blog post...
