The Bellagio Gardens Fall Display

September 25, 2009

You know you’ve acclimated to the Vegas hot weather when you walk through the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and you actually get cold! The fall colors are out in the gardens and it is, of course, beautiful. Maybe it is not like a stroll through Vermont, but it is gorgeous, all the same. The new Fall display opened in the Conservatory on last Thursday and I took some photos for you. I know many of my readers love that place and if you can’t make it here this season, I have some pictures for you. In the entrance is a thirteen-foot scarecrow looking down on you with a smile. There are gold, scarlet and amber colors throughout the garden and sprinkled about. Some of the old features are back, like the talking tree, the 35-foot tall cider mill powered by water, and the ten-foot tall Ent - ... Read the full blog post...

I left Vegas

September 14, 2009

I needed to leave town for a few days. Not because ‘they’ were after me, although they probably are for something, but my best friend was getting married in Utah. I wasn’t about to let that happen without me! The bird sitter flaked on me just before the trip so I decided to just take him with me. Have you ever traveled a long distance with an African Grey parrot before? I wouldn’t recommend it. He spend the first hour of the trip freaking out and begging to go home. He settled in eventually once we hit the long stretch of road going out of Las Vegas. Then he would start complaining off and on until we arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah. If you have never made that drive from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City, I’d highly recommend it if you like the ... Read the full blog post...

Much Bling going to the auction block in Las Vegas

September 8, 2009

The ancient fossils and dinosaur skeletons aren’t the only thing Bonhams and Butterfields will be auctioning, there will be lots of jewelry and watches too! The Salon Jewelry auction will be held on September 21, 2009, at 1pm at the Venetian in Las Vegas. It will be simulcast in San Francisco and Los Angeles. When I previewed the fossils I couldn’t help but notice all those beautiful, colorful, sparkly, shiny things in the jewelry cases. I tried to walk past and did manage to stay away for a while, but hey, come on, I’m a girl. I ended up back at the pretty things before I left. I was strolling through by fingertips on the case glass, admiring all those beautiful and unusual rings, bracelets, necklaces and pins. Michael Larsen, the Senior Watch Specialist for Bonhams & Butterfields noticed my struggle with my camera. He offered ... Read the full blog post...

So a Wooly Mammoth and T-Rex walk into a casino

September 6, 2009

Bonhams & Butterfields Auction has set up a mini-museum inside the old Guggenheim Hermitage Museum inside the Venetian Casino. They will be holding an auction on October 3rd, 2009. Besides auctioning off a 66-million year old Tyrannosaurex skeleton named “Samson”, there are lots and lots of other way cool fossils. This make-shift museum is going to be open to the public starting September 18th. It only costs $6.00 per person to go inside and see this incredibly cool stuff. I went inside a couple of days ago and Tom Lindgren, from Bonhams showed me around. He’s their Natural History Specialist and was in charge of unpacking and setting up these fossils. If you ever need to know which bone connects to another, I guess he’s your man. Tom and I hung around the huge T-Rex, one of the largest ever found to date. He told me all ... A CityCenter Sneak Peek

August 28, 2009

There is something new for the artsy set. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art is opening up a new exhibit on September 18, 2009, and it will run through April 4, 2010. This art show is named "12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter" and is partnered with the CityCenter Fine Art Collection. I really didn't think most tourists who come to Vegas were interested in art gallery shows, but I'm getting asked about art now and then these days. People like to go to museums and have a little culture in their gambling and feasting outings, who knew? As it turns out, it wasn't just a goofy idea dreamed up by the Bellagio and Steve Wynn. People like still love some art! My faith in humanity has been renewed. "12 + 7" stands for twelve contemporary art stars and seven of the master architects who ... Read the full blog post...

The Best T-Rex Ever, coming to Vegas to be sold!

August 18, 2009

The coolest event ever is coming up at the Venetian in Las Vegas. I mean, totally and completely cool. Bonhams and Butterfields is going to auction off a real Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur, named Samson, and lots of other dinosaurs and fossils. The actual auction is scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd, 2009, at the Venetian in the space formerly occupied by the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum. I just got off the phone with Thomas Lindgren, the Co-director of Natural History at Bonhams & Butterfields. He has been watching this particular T-Rex named Samson since the mid 1990s. Samson is 66 million years old and is one of the three most complete specimens to have been discovered. More than 50% of the total bone count of the entire skeleton is with Samson. It was excavated near Buffalo, South Dakota over fifteen years ago. It was sold ... Read the full blog post...

July 30, 2009

Do you watch CSI? Then you’re going to love this! The MGM Grand Hotel is going to have an interactive CSI exhibit for you to go play around in. It isn’t open yet, but I’ve been told by those in the know it could be open as early as late August. In Search of Oscar Goodman

July 19, 2009

I saw on the morning news that it was Oscar Goodman’s birthday and he was having a public party on Fremont Street on Friday night! So, of course, I went. I wasn’t sure where it would be so I emailed my favorite morning news anchor and in between being the news guy on TV and dinking around with his Facebook account, he emailed me back to go to 1st and Fremont. It was very, very hot outside so I waited until 7pm to leave. I figured it would drop to at least 100 degrees by then. Well, wrong. It was 108 or so and the party was supposed to start at 7pm so I got into the bloggermobile and braved the heat. I parked in my usual spot over at Main Street Station and walked up to Fremont Street. It is only two blocks. I got ... Read the full blog post...

A Summer Stroll through the Venetian

May 18, 2009

Nothing better on a hot summer day than a walk through the Venetian.  Okay, I know, it isn’t really summer yet, but our Mayor has officially declared it summer so I’m saying it’s summertime.  Us Vegas locals stick together, you know. The Venetian is so beautiful and so is the Palazzo, the casino it is connected to.  The easy way to do this, at least how I do it, is I take Twain Street to the parking ramp in the Palazzo.  I take the first right inside there and there are always spots open really close to the escalator.  The floor is called one, but I know the sign going in says it is something different.  I typically park in 1a or 1b and it is a real short distance to the escalator. Once up in the Palazzo, I walk right over to the Venetian.  They are decorated for Spring with colorful ... Read the full blog post...
