Tipping Over (Part 2)
March 28, 2010
In my experience, a large percentage of tipped employees grossly overestimate their own level of competence. I don't believe that I have ever, and I mean ever heard a tipped employee say "You know, I think I got better tips than I deserved today." Instead, it's always the same tale of woe about the deadbeat customer who is incapable of comprehending just how difficult it is to carry a beer from point A to point B. I know a lot of tipped employees in this town, and almost none of them provide the level of service they think they do. Instead, they hang themselves on the cross while crowing about how they work soooooooooo hard to make people happy, yet get so little in return. Stop me if you've heard this one - "I provide excellent, superior service, and it's only reasonable to ... Read the full blog post...
Tipping Over (Part 1)
Tips. Even though Las Vegas is now little more than a corporate entity masquerading as a municipality, you still can't pick up a guide book or go to a Vegas website without being schooled in the art of tipping. We have the propaganda down to a science. "Tipping is the economic engine of Las Vegas." "Everyone you encounter in Las Vegas needs tips for their livelihood, so be sure to carry plenty of cash." "The rule of thumb is $1 for everyone you come in contact with, 20% for meals, blah blah blah." If you think about it, this whole campaign is brilliant. Every employer in this town has created a paradigm under which you, not them, are the villain when their employees can't make ends meet. Does anyone out there really think that Jim Murren would lose his house if he tripled the wages of his cocktail waitresses? Is there anyone reading this who believes ... Read the full blog post...
Local Media: Opiate for the Masses
March 16, 2010
It's that time of the month. The time of the month when our local media grows bored and desperate. The time of the month where the influx of actual news grinds to a halt and yellow journalism begins to rear its ugly head. Take for example, this recurring article. Now, at first the article seems legitimate. After all, a pharmacy was robbed. The local media, however, never one to miss a propaganda opportunity, seized the moment. Robbers targeted a Las Vegas pharmacy on Monday, getting away with thousands of dollars in prescription medication. Experts say the incident is indicative of an already serious problem in Southern Nevada: prescription drug abuse. When a bank has been robbed, have you ever, and I mean ever seen a news outlet address American's addiction to money? Maybe credit ruined the life of the bank robber, and they were at risk of losing their house? Maybe someone was sick, and the ... Read the full blog post...
Brother Can You Spare a Dime?
February 24, 2010
"Hey man, can you spare a couple of bucks?", said a voice from out of nowhere. Without breaking stride, I continued my walk on the pedestrian bridge toward the MGM Grand, and I quickly became aware that someone was following closely behind me. "What, you can't hear me?", the voice said more loudly. I looked over my shoulder to see a tall black gentleman with headphones and a box of what appeared to be CD's trailing about 5 paces behind me. I kept walking. "I don't need to ask motherf*cker, if I want your money I'll just take it!" Of course, his logic was flawed. If he could have taken my money, the fact that he didn't take it was prima-facie evidence that he didn't truly want my money. One might wonder why he even bothered to ask. Yes, this thought actually did go through my mind at the time, and while I was tempted to engage ... Read the full blog post...
Age Against The Machine
February 22, 2010
It's been one of those weekends. One of those weekends where nothing has gone right and I am pissed off at the world and everyone in it. Fortunately, I'm only in this mood 52 weekends out of the year, so things should turn around shortly. For whatever reason, I have had one hell of a frustrating weekend with regards to transportation around Vegas. Due to my dedication to stemming the effects of global warming, and to express my unconditional love for mother earth, for the first time in many months ... I decided to avail myself of a city bus on Friday. When I say "city bus", I do not mean a semi-functional line such as the Deuce or the 108 ... I am talking about a bus that primarily winds through locals-only areas of the city. While embarking on this trip, it never took me so long to go so short a distance in ... Read the full blog post...
iRex
January 28, 2010
"Rex, isn't this supposed to be a Las Vegas Blog?" My blogs are not traditional Vegas blogs. I don't try to be the Review Journal, nor do I try to report all the Vegas news that's fit to print. You already have 500 places to go for that (I recommend typing "Las Vegas" into Google News for all the mainstream news you can handle). Someone once called my blog "The VegasRex Show" and while it sounds narcissistic, it's probably closer to accurate than calling it "The Great Magical I Love Everything About Las Vegas Click Here To Book Great Room Rates" Blog. This is not so much a Las Vegas Blog as it is a blog written by a guy who lives in Las Vegas. I write about the things I see, hear, and read that interest me. Since I live smack between The Bellagio and Fremont Street, my observations usually involve Las Vegas, ... Read the full blog post...
Boys Will Be Boys
January 27, 2010
Years ago I was riding in the passenger seat of an automobile while a young female was behind the wheel. We were on our way from Washington to New York, and like most people, we took I-95 north. As we were coming off the downward span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge (which links Delaware with New Jersey), apparently we picked up too much speed. We had not been in New Jersey for more than 2 minutes when police lights lit up the rear view mirror. When the officer came to the window, my female friend immediately developed tears in her eyes and explained to the officer that she had a fear of bridges, and was just trying to get off of it as quickly as possible. She kept apologizing, lamenting what was going to happen to her driving record and car insurance, and before I knew it, the officer let her off with ... Read the full blog post...
The World’s Greatest Smartphone
January 16, 2010
Now that CES is officially in the books, it is time for a definite assessment of the state of technology, and who better to write such an article than yours truly. The New Year was rough from an electronic standpoint, and I rang in 2010 with a bit of technological discontent. My Blackberry has become too slow, the outages have been too numerous, and because of this I've spent a large part of the last week seeking its replacement. I swore up and down that I was not going to get another smartphone, but the temptation was too great. I bought the hype and I got caught up in the buzz. Droid! Nexus One! Samsung HD! iPhone GS! Here I was, the world's greatest blogger and smartest person in the solar system ... yet I had a laughable Blackberry Curve that I purchased in early 2008. The only thing ... The 2000’s: A Retrospective
December 30, 2009
Is there anything more cliche' than end-of-year retrospectives trotted out by self-important blowhards who think they have more insight than the average person? Yes. Even more annoying is end-of-year retrospectives trotted out by blowhards which are immediately preceded by self-deprecating comments intended to win over the audience before said blowhard launches into fifty paragraphs of self-indulgent crap. So, without further ado ... Exactly ten years ago this Thursday, I was in Times Square ushering in the new millennium with hundreds of thousands of my closest friends. We were all waiting for the world to end at the stroke of midnight. We were all relieved when the lights of Manhattan stayed on at 12:01am, but I was somewhat disconcerted when Citibank rejected my ATM card as "expired" an hour later as I tried to get cash in the West Village. Despite this minor setback, it was hard to deny that we were on the precipice of promising ... Read the full blog post...
What Happens in Vegas, Stays in 0×9940B925
November 29, 2009
Just when I thought I was done geeking out ... July 2008: I walk into a Palazzo elevator en-route to a suite on an upper floor and I glance at the small video screen above the button panel. Just as the doors close, it turns blue, lines of cryptic white text scroll down the screen, quickly followed by a “Windows XP” logo. “Well, it's been nice knowing you all”, I said to my fellow passengers, “if the elevator is running on Windows, then we're all goners.” Nervous stares. Flash forward to last Friday. I got to the top of the City Center walkway, and what greeted me at the top other than a gigantic version of a spectacular failure which used to greet me on a daily basis with Windows 95. I was stunned. Now, I'm not saying this to embarrass or ridicule anyone. These little malfunctions are kind of fun because they look out of place. We all ... Read the full blog post...
