CityCenter set to open soon
November 20, 2009
The City Center, a joint venture project for MGM Mirage and Infinity World Development corp., is scheduled to start opening in just a couple of weeks on the Las Vegas Strip. This has been a very much anticipated face lift for Las Vegas. To hear some news reports, it not only will save Las Vegas from its unemployment crisis by employing thousands, it will save the planet as well with all its renewal resources in its design. And well, it is just plain cool. The first part of City Center to open will be Vdara on December 1st, 2009. This all suite hotel and spa has nightly rates from $159 to $2000. This is a nongaming, nonsmoking hotel. If you enjoy gambling, it is very close by in the City Center as well as entertainment, shopping and dining. Vdara offers a luxurious wellness spa ... Christmas Vegas Style
November 18, 2009
It is that time of year already! Ethel’s Chocolate Factory has lit the Christmas lights for the season in their famous cactus garden. Some cities have a Christmas Street and here in Las Vegas we have the Ethel M’s cactus garden. Odd, I know, but we like it. Last night local entertainers George Wallace, Zowie Bowie, Michael Grimm and the group Mosaic ushered in the winter season with Christmas songs and entertained the crowd while they waited for the lights to come on in the garden. I’m a big blues fan and was pleased that Michael Grimm played the only Christmas song I actually like. At about 6:30pm, the switch was hit and the desert garden illuminated in the night to cheers from the anxious onlookers. George Wallace offered a special deal to see his show later that night. He told everyone that the first one hundred ... Read the full blog post...
Photos of the Las Vegas Strip
November 9, 2009
Friday’s adventures on the Las Vegas Strip started with a traffic jam, of course! I sat in traffic for about twenty minutes to go just a couple of blocks on Tropicana headed towards the Strip. So, I made like a tourist and took photos while I was parked there. I didn’t realize it at the time, but when I went through the photos I saw this one. It looks like a new version of the Beatles' Abbey Road album cover. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s what I see in it. Here is what I could get of the Tropicana while sitting in traffic. That casino is not easy to take a photo of from the road! So, this is the best I could do for you guys who have fond Tropicana memories. Okay, I guess there is a ship outside of the New York New York ... Read the full blog post...
Costumes and Magician's Tricks on Fremont Street
October 23, 2009
Last night there was a private party on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, which I attended with some party animals from Wisconsin. I knew one of the girls, Julie, from about a year and a half ago when we went on a downtown Las Vegas adventure. She’s was a lot of fun and this time she was bringing friends. Julie claimed these gals were going to outdo her in the having a good time competition. I braced myself and my camera for an eventful evening. The event started early, at 7pm, which I find to be a real plus. I’m old and I eat dinner at 4pm with an African Grey Parrot. A 7pm party time sounds just about right for me. I can still go to sleep by 10pm. That is just how old I have become. The evening’s festivities started a little ... Read the full blog post...
Around the Vegas Strip taking photos
October 21, 2009
I have some photos I’ve been saving up from when I was hanging out on the Las Vegas Strip a couple of weeks ago. At least most of them are from a couple of weeks ago. I know how you want to be in Vegas and gambling in person all live and up close and personal, so I thought I’d post them here for you to enjoy. I SO love my new camera! I was hanging out mostly on the Margarittaville balcony. I really like that little balcony. Whenever I’m walking around on that part of the strip, I like to just hang out there and get a little sun while watching the tourists walk by. On this particular day there were a couple of guys standing outside Margarittaville with a couple of Macaws. The birds were having a good time and the guys were having fun ... The Palazzo's Fall Decorations
October 4, 2009
The Palazzo Casino has put up their autumn decorations and seeing how I needed to be there anyway, I thought it was the perfect time to try out the new camera. The new design started on September 30th and will be up until November 29, 2009. I started in the lobby and worked my over to the waterfall. The Lalique inspired statue in the lobby is draped in the swirling hand-sculpted bronze vine and copper toned leaves. Around the base of the statue are various pumpkin patches with the usual gigantic pumpkins ranging in weights from 300 to 1000 pounds each. You can click on the photos in my blog posts and see a larger version of them. There is a lot of fall color with mums, cattails, tall grasses and various other flowers giving the usual reds, oranges and yellows of fall. The swirling vine is hand-sculpted from steel adorned with fully ... Read the full blog post...
The Bellagio Gardens Fall Display
September 25, 2009
You know you’ve acclimated to the Vegas hot weather when you walk through the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and you actually get cold! The fall colors are out in the gardens and it is, of course, beautiful. Maybe it is not like a stroll through Vermont, but it is gorgeous, all the same. The new Fall display opened in the Conservatory on last Thursday and I took some photos for you. I know many of my readers love that place and if you can’t make it here this season, I have some pictures for you. In the entrance is a thirteen-foot scarecrow looking down on you with a smile. There are gold, scarlet and amber colors throughout the garden and sprinkled about. Some of the old features are back, like the talking tree, the 35-foot tall cider mill powered by water, and the ten-foot tall Ent - ... Read the full blog post...
City Center Preview
September 19, 2009
The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s latest show is “12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter.” This new exhibition is in partnership with CityCenter Fine Art Collection and it debuted September 18th, 2009. I went to check it out, of course! This exhibition features sculptures, drawings, paintings and models by twelve contemporary artists and seven of the master architects who designed CityCenter. CityCenter will open to the public in December of this year. This art is on display in the meantime so you can get a bit of a preview of what this new Las Vegas development is all about. This exhibit will run through April, 2010. “CityCenter will be an international architectural achievement integrating the talents of world-renowned artists, architects and designers in one development; it will be a landmark of global taste and style,” said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Mirage. ... So a Wooly Mammoth and T-Rex walk into a casino
September 6, 2009
Bonhams & Butterfields Auction has set up a mini-museum inside the old Guggenheim Hermitage Museum inside the Venetian Casino. They will be holding an auction on October 3rd, 2009. Besides auctioning off a 66-million year old Tyrannosaurex skeleton named “Samson”, there are lots and lots of other way cool fossils. This make-shift museum is going to be open to the public starting September 18th. It only costs $6.00 per person to go inside and see this incredibly cool stuff. I went inside a couple of days ago and Tom Lindgren, from Bonhams showed me around. He’s their Natural History Specialist and was in charge of unpacking and setting up these fossils. If you ever need to know which bone connects to another, I guess he’s your man. Tom and I hung around the huge T-Rex, one of the largest ever found to date. He told me all ... A CityCenter Sneak Peek
August 28, 2009
There is something new for the artsy set. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art is opening up a new exhibit on September 18, 2009, and it will run through April 4, 2010. This art show is named "12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter" and is partnered with the CityCenter Fine Art Collection. I really didn't think most tourists who come to Vegas were interested in art gallery shows, but I'm getting asked about art now and then these days. People like to go to museums and have a little culture in their gambling and feasting outings, who knew? As it turns out, it wasn't just a goofy idea dreamed up by the Bellagio and Steve Wynn. People like still love some art! My faith in humanity has been renewed. "12 + 7" stands for twelve contemporary art stars and seven of the master architects who ... Read the full blog post...
