Age Against The Machine

February 22, 2010

It's been one of those weekends. One of those weekends where nothing has gone right and I am pissed off at the world and everyone in it. Fortunately, I'm only in this mood 52 weekends out of the year, so things should turn around shortly. For whatever reason, I have had one hell of a frustrating weekend with regards to transportation around Vegas. Due to my dedication to stemming the effects of global warming, and to express my unconditional love for mother earth, for the first time in many months ... I decided to avail myself of a city bus on Friday.  When I say "city bus", I do not mean a semi-functional line such as the Deuce or the 108 ... I am talking about a bus that primarily winds through locals-only areas of the city. While embarking on this trip, it never took me so long to go so short a distance in ... Las Vegas Derailed

February 1, 2010

It's a bad time to be a fan of rail transit in Las Vegas. The application for our proposed high-speed Maglev train from Anaheim to Las Vegas has been denied. So much for that. Supposedly, not all is lost, however.  Backers of the "DesertXpress" train from Victorville to Las Vegas see this as a positive development since their project is still in the works, and the ruling eliminates what would ostensibly be their primary competitor. In theory. Frankly, if anyone thinks Californians are going to all of a sudden discover rail travel and abandon their vehicles, they're higher than I have ever been in my life. I used to live directly on top of the Los Angeles Red Line subway, and I rode it almost daily, but the greatest thing about the train was the fact that I almost never had to compete for a seat.  Keep in mind that this was a train that traversed ... Pain For The Train

December 20, 2009

We all saw this coming from 8,000 miles away, and it's finally here. The Las Vegas Monorail Company has stated that it "might" seek bankruptcy protection in the near future. It's hard to believe that a transit system that links the MGM Grand and the Sahara (the two most synergistic properties in Las Vegas) together is having problems, but alas it is true. As the most prolific monorail rider in the history of Las Vegas, this really and truly does disappoint me.  I'm aware that the rail is a punch line, but it takes me mere minutes to walk to the Sahara Station, and it's my primary means into and out of the mid-to-south Strip. While other people wring their hands about traffic, parking, and valets, the monorail is the prime reason that I really don't have to worry about any of this. I ride the Deuce and drive my car to nearby properties as ... Read the full blog post...

What Happens in Rexville

November 25, 2009

Rexville. Much like Compton, the Bronx, and the Encore Hotel and Casino … the word denotes a location that strikes fear in the hearts of all men. This may be coming to an end, however. The neighborhood best known for overrated custard stands, pants-less murderers, talk show hosts with bad accents, petrified Indian actresses, and questionably sane Las Vegas “bloggers” is finally getting a little love from the city. The Scenic Byways project has begun making its way south from Downtown into Rexville, and so far I like what I see. Obviously, “Rexville” is not an official map designation, although it goddamn well should be since I have never seen as much concentrated mainstream coverage of this area than I have in the last several months.  Is it a coincidence, or is the 30% tail wagging the 70% dog? It's a legitimate question, but it doesn't matter terribly much.  The important thing is that the neighborhood ... Read the full blog post...

Las Vegas: Where Good Ideas Come to Die

November 13, 2009

How about that for a slogan? Dear LVCVA ... that one's on the house. You knew it couldn't last. http://www.lvrj.com/news/breaking_news/Pole-dancer-truck-to-disappear-from-Strip-70038082.html: ”Hauling pole dancers around the Strip in a transparent box turned out to be a short-lived marketing stunt. The owners of the all-nude clubs Deja Vu Showgirls and Little Darlings agreed today to halt the road shows that grabbed widespread attention and stirred a debate about whether they had gone too far, even in Las Vegas. Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, who considered it a traffic hazard, welcomed the news. "There will be no more stripper-mobiles after right now," Sisolak said. "It's gone. It's done." … Given that Larry Beard, Marketing Director of Deja Vu, insisted to the Associated Press earlier this week that he was willing to fight the County on the matter, it looks like he quickly turned into the anatomical object that his dancers are hiding under the front of their g-strings. Or maybe he's ... Read the full blog post...

Cruising the Assphalt

November 12, 2009

Several days ago, I saw a bizarre new vehicle rolling down the street. It appeared to be some kind of fishbowl-like truck with women dancing inside. Since I was about 50 yards away and on foot, I was not able to get a closer look as it took off south on Las Vegas Boulevard in relatively mild and unfettered traffic. Last night was different. After leaving the Palazzo parking garage and queuing up at the light near the Fashion Show Mall and Treasure Island, it appeared before my very eyes. I once again saw the windowed vehicle filled with four women dressed in bikini attire, and riding shotgun, I ordered the driver to "follow that van". Not that he would have done otherwise. Our automatic transmission vehicle had already turned into a stick shift ... if you know what I mean. Hell, by the time the light turned ... Read the full blog post...

Sign of The Times

September 21, 2009

The area of Las Vegas Boulevard just north of Sahara is not only home to the (potentially over-hyped) Luv-It Frozen Custard. It's also escort-billboard central. Rex, I'm really happy for you, imma let you finish, but Richard Danielson wrote one of the best blog posts of all time! - Kanye There is some debate as to where “The Strip” ends (or even if it exists at all anymore), but generally speaking … Sahara Ave is more or less the traditional cutoff point on top. Once you find yourself north of this street, you are in a proverbial no-tourists-land that I simply call “Central Vegas”.  Technically, this area of the city is part of Downtown (The Stratosphere is officially a Downtown casino), but aside from this it has few claims to fame. What we do have, however, is the highest concentration of mobile billboards in the free world ... and the United States as well. These billboards ... Read the full blog post...

Tales From The Rails

July 29, 2009

Since I spent both Friday and Saturday nights Downtown, I decided to spend Sunday hanging out on The Strip. I jumped on the Monorail at the Sahara station en-route to the MGM Grand, and as I was buying my dollar locals pass, I struck up a conversation with the booth monkey. While most monorail booth monkeys are rude, contemptuous, or indifferent creatures … this particular young lady was actually quite nice.  I almost feel bad calling her a “booth monkey”, but I've grown to love the monikers that I have invented.  They are each like one of my cherished glue-sniffing children. I know that self-important titles are all the rage these days, so maybe I should reconsider my description of other people's occupations.  Perhaps “senior monorail ticket engineer” is more appropriate. In any event, while the booth monkey (sorry, it just flows better) was filling out the eight hundred pages of paperwork in order ... Read the full blog post...

DesertXpress – The Train to Nowhere

July 6, 2009

If you thought the Las Vegas Monorail was a cruel joke, get ready for a replay. It looks like there may soon be another way to get to Las Vegas from an obscure California town, and hey, isn't that just what we need the most? The federal government has designated a route between Southern California and Las Vegas as part of  a new “high-speed rail corridor”, and a group of investors armed with Federal money are looking to take advantage of the situation. In what can only be described as the most ill-conceived rail project ever, in a few short years a $4 Billion project known as DesertXpress might begin linking Las Vegas to the huge California city of … wait for it … Victorville.  That's right, Victorville.  For those of you who are not familiar with this place, it is a small city in the high desert about 100 miles from major ... Taking The Train to Times Square in Vegas

June 24, 2009

This week has brought word of a couple of issues that effect my neighborhood directly. First of all, it's hard to believe that several months have passed without a mention of the monorail. Why? Because I am the most prolific Las Vegas monorail rider in the world. I am not saying this in a joking manner or using hyperbole.  I honestly believe that I have ridden this particular transit system more than any other human being on planet earth.  There are only about five neighborhoods in total that are even served by the Monorail, and most of the people in those neighborhoods don't ride the rail … they drive stolen cars. Since I have ridden this train thousands of times, and if I am not #1 - I am damn close.  I've also tailored my residential choices over the last several years to ensure that I was never more than a 5 minute walk ...
