Sammy Hagar Rocks the Strip Again Last Night
December 5, 2009
Las Vegas just doesn’t get any better than this! Last night was the official grand opening of Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Las Vegas, in the Miracle Mile of Shops over at Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas Strip. Did you think I’d miss this? Not a chance! I stood there with reporters shivering in the cold waiting for Sammy Hagar’s big entrance on to the red carpet. And along came Carrot Top. You’ve gotta love Carrot Top. I don’t know why he was there, maybe just to have a little fun with us because he was pretty much the last person we were expecting to see right then. He goofed for photographers for a bit and then the crowd of rabid fans began to scream. Sammy had arrived. He ran over to some fans that were being held back by a combination of a rope and a ... The T-Rex has found a home
November 13, 2009
For those of you who have been following along, "Samson" the T-Rex has found a new home. The rare 66-million year old Tyrannosaurus skeleton - dubbed "Samson" - is one of the three most complete specimens to have been discovered. Native to North America, Tyrannosaurus rex is recognized as the 'Tyrant Lizard King' and is the most famous of the behemoths of the "Age of Dinosaurs." This rare example from the Cretaceous period was excavated near Buffalo, South Dakota over 15 years ago. After changing hands a couple of times since discovery, Samson was part of the Nature History Auction which took place recently at the Venetian Hotel and Casino by Bonhams and Butterfields Auctioneers. The bids for Samson did not make the reserve, but there was a tremendous interest after the auction from institutional parties and private buyers from around the world. Now, Samson, who is actually was a she, has found a ... Read the full blog post...
Are the StripperMobile's Days Numbered?
November 12, 2009
Déjà Vu, one of the local strip joints, has taken their strippers to the streets. Namely, Las Vegas Boulevard. They built a truck with sort of a glass case on the back of it, stuck a stripper pole in there, tossed in a stripper or two and up and down the Vegas Strip they go. So, you’re going, “Only in Vegas!” Well, not so fast. There are some pretty ticked off people about this one. First, I have to say, this is one of the best public relations moves I’ve seen anybody do in a long time. Déjà Vu has been getting daily press over this. Our local fox TV station has run a story about it, but they also have this ‘daily rant’ where people can call up or email what has got their goat today and they put it on the news daily. ... Day of the Dead Las Vegas Style
November 8, 2009
“Dia de los Muertos,” (Day of the Dead), was happening for First Friday, Downtown, Las Vegas. Sure, it is on the first of November really, but it was still going on for the monthly art gallery stroll here in Las Vegas, which we call First Friday. I hung out for a bit at Place Gallery on Main Street for the happenings. It was a family friendly night, as it usually is at Place. There were altars aplenty for honoring the dead. A lot of work went into the themes and decorations. Kids were around busying themselves and actually being very well behaved! If you ever want to see that in person, you might checkout Place. Well behaved kids in Vegas can be as elusive as Osama bin Laden. It is always a bit of a surprise when you see one. One interesting altar was ... Read the full blog post...
The Goings On in the Las Vegas Valley
November 2, 2009
Driving around Las Vegas you see some weird stuff sometimes. It is always interesting, but sometimes a little strange. The cops have been in the news quite a bit lately. They turn up DOA in car accidents from time to time. Each time it happens, people start yelling on the evening news about it. Some people side with the cops and some side with the person who was hit by them. The debate rages on. Even the police department is saying things need to change in their organization lately. The last officer who died was speeding down the road at 100 mph or more and not only did not have his siren and lights going, he wasn’t wearing a seat belt. This seems to be a recurring theme lately. In the past week or so, I have seen an unusual number of police ... Read the full blog post...
Motorcycles aplenty
October 3, 2009
This morning I had to run back to my office because I realized I left my camera battery plugged into the charger on my desk. When I got to Sahara and Eastern I saw motorcycles everywhere. There were more bikes on the road than there were cars this morning on that corner. A few stores from the corner is the Harley-Davidson store. As I drove by I saw there was a bit of an event going on over there. Now, I have to tell ya, there is nothing quite like walking across a huge parking lot full of bikes and bikers when you woke up with 80s hair. I haven’t been checked out quite like that since I was eighteen-years old. I just might go back. You know, for a helmet or something… As it turns out, this weekend is the BikeFest. Bikers from ... Expert Gambling Tips
September 22, 2009
You know, living in Las Vegas sort of makes one an expert. People think I know what’s going on here at any given moment, when I’m actually more concerned in a day about whether or not my yard’s watering system blew a hose again. Or I wonder where the hell my gardener has gotten off to. People think because I live here and write a couple of Vegas blogs that I know everything there is to know about Las Vegas. Well, I don’t. I know a lot of things about Las Vegas, but when you meet me you quickly realize that I know what tourists tell me for the most part. I, like most of Vegas’s residents, don’t gamble. You might think because I live here that I’m out every night throwing money around, riding in limousines and eating in those fine restaurants and herding ... Read the full blog post...
And Mayweather Kick Some Ass
September 20, 2009
I would have loved to have attended the Mayweather Marquez fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but hey, I’m just a poor writer. Those tickets are expensive these days! Maybe I need a nice, cigar smoking boyfriend. I have the boobs to probably pull that off, but I think I have a date with destiny instead. I’ll wait for my true love to call. I was going to go bet on the fight. I never liked Mayweather. No particular reason for not liking him, I just don’t. There was a fight a few years ago where I decided I didn’t like him. I don’t remember who he fought now, was it Tyson?? Anyway, I decided the guy just wasn’t ready for prime time and my money was going on Marquez. But then, I got caught up in other things ... I left Vegas
September 14, 2009
I needed to leave town for a few days. Not because ‘they’ were after me, although they probably are for something, but my best friend was getting married in Utah. I wasn’t about to let that happen without me! The bird sitter flaked on me just before the trip so I decided to just take him with me. Have you ever traveled a long distance with an African Grey parrot before? I wouldn’t recommend it. He spend the first hour of the trip freaking out and begging to go home. He settled in eventually once we hit the long stretch of road going out of Las Vegas. Then he would start complaining off and on until we arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah. If you have never made that drive from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City, I’d highly recommend it if you like the ... Read the full blog post...
A day in the life of a Vegas Local
August 9, 2009
I’ve been taking it easy this week or so. My shoulder is way messed up and everything I do seems to make it worse. So I stayed around home, played with my bird and did some overdue housekeeping. No shows, no partying, no staying up late, just me, a parrot, the couch and some Vicodin here and there. Besides, I’m stressing over an investment that went bad last year. That business takes up an awful lot of my time these days and it still isn’t paying off. So it goes. We do what we’ve got to do. It occurs to me that a lot of you never really leave the strip when you come here. I thought I’d give you a glimpse of what it is like to live in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, when I have my camera with me and ready ... Read the full blog post...
