Bikers and Roller Derby Girls mix it up at the Double Down
August 3, 2009
What is more fun than a biker bar? Tossing in a few hundred Roller Derby gals in there to mix it up. RollerCon 2009 has been going on in Las Vegas for the past several days. This is the annual convention for the roller derby. Over a thousand of them descended on our fine Sin City and networked, trained, shopped for outfits, got new gear and possibly swapped some lipstick. I was a big fan of the roller derby in the 1960s. I’d watch Anne Calvello with her multi-colored hair beat the crap out of some other skater and cheer her on. The roller derby was my wrestling, because, well, I was a girl. Although, I did sort of like wrestling too back then. Who says I didn’t have any role models? I had the show “Julia” on TV so I knew I could grow up ... Read the full blog post...
Tooling around Fabulous Las Vegas
July 23, 2009
So, you hit Las Vegas and think, “Wow, I need a car to hit all the casinos!” Well, you don’t really. It would be nice if we had some sort of reasonable public transportation here, but we don’t. The monorail does not go to the airport and it really isn’t all that far from the strip. Yeah, go figure, long story there. Most of the casinos you are going to want to see are on the strip or on Fremont Street. And you’ll probably be staying one place or the other. The rest of them are pretty much locals places, or when you check in to the ones far away, you’ll want to stay right there. But, let’s say you’re adventurous and you are going to rent a car. Let me explain what driving in Las Vegas is like. It is ... Read the full blog post...
Welcome to Las Vegas Sign Defaced
July 14, 2009
The Las Vegas Sign was defaced last night. It appears a group of people used a red marker to write their initials all over it. Not cool. I went over to take a look. I live on the opposite end of the strip, but my office is on the side of the city where the sign is. I took Maryland to Tropicana and then realized I had made a big mistake. I don't read my own stuff... I forgot about the construction on Tropicana. Damn. I was in the middle of a traffic jam. On the bright side, it gave me an opportunity to take a couple of photos for those who miss Las Vegas. I posted a couple on Twitter for those who follow me and wish they were in Las Vegas right now but cannot be. There was almost an accident at one intersection because some people just are too important ... Read the full blog post...
Stupid is as stupid does
July 11, 2009
Something has been on my mind lately. It seems every couple of weeks there is press coverage of yet another loser who committed a crime in another state and then went straight to Las Vegas. The US Marshals and/or the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police pick them up, toss them in the can and wait for their state to come fetch them. It seems to be happening more and more, or maybe I'm just noticing it. The first time I heard this and went "WTF?" is when Warren Jeffs, the famed Utah/Arizona polygamist prophet came here to hide. Now, if I were into the things that Warren Jeffs was into like simple living, extreme modesty in dress, and the other things he, his wives and his followers seem to be about, Las Vegas would be the last place I'd like to be caught. What shame and humiliation, ... Read the full blog post...
Big Brother and the Holding Company in Vegas
July 5, 2009
I got a jump start on the 4th of July because I really wanted to see Big Brother and the Holding Company on Fremont Street Experience, downtown, Las Vegas. You never know what you’re going to get with these old groups, and this is one that I didn’t want to miss. They played for free on Fremont Street and I was there. I was just in time for the first light show of the night. After the regular show they placed the new Fourth of July light show. It was way cool. It is also quite long. I skipped the first part of the Hendrix type style of the national anthem, which was a little hard on the ears, but I got the rest of it on video for you. Big Brother and the Holding Company has three of the original members in it. I ... Read the full blog post...
A Warren Moon Meet and Greet
June 30, 2009
On June 12, 2009, The Palazzo welcomed NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon and other celebrity athletes and friends at The Sportsbook Bar & Grill. The group was in town for the 9th Annual Sports Dream Bowl which benefits the Urban Youth Scholarship Fund. The national charity awards inner city youth financial scholarships to pursue higher education. Warren and friends were being interviewed LIVE for the ESPN radio show, “Cofield & Cokin.” They were all having a great time with the hosts of the radio show. Some discussed their previous and current careers while others gave their thoughts and insight on sporting event highlights of today. Most importantly at the end of each interview, they talked about what the Sports Dream Bowl meant to them and how it was a meaningful way to give back and make a difference. The celebrity athletes in attendance were: Warren Moon, Junior Seau, ... Read the full blog post...
I Just Want to Celebrate – Rare Earth
June 7, 2009
Security was really beefed up last night for the free Rare Earth Concert on Fremont Street, Downtown, Las Vegas. I saw more than enough to make me feel safe. Actually, there were so many of them that the girls in the front took to flirting in order to get into the VIP area in front of the stage. That actually worked for some young girls from Oklahoma. The twenty-something security guard got them some passes and ushered them to the front area, they squealed all the way there. You will see them in the video I took. They kept turning around and smiling. Rare Earth was hot in the early 70s. They had some big hits with "Big Brother","Born to wander", "Tobacco road", "Losin You", and "I Just Want To Celebrate". You might not remember the songs by the titles, but you sure ... Read the full blog post...
Smoke 'em if ya got 'em! Well, almost.
June 2, 2009
The smoking ban was revised by the Nevada State Assembly last Sunday. So smokers, you’re in luck. We’re back in polluted air once again. Butt heaven! Well, sort of. There was no ban of the ban. There are some changes, though. The bit of annoyance called the “Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act” , was presumably named because there is only one type of air pollution in Nevada and that is smokers. Nobody cares about the inch of filth that is all over my countertops when I leave a window open, because obviously this came from smokers. Oh yeah, I smoke so it must have come from my cigarettes. So what if it only shows up if I open a window. Must be God choosing that particular moment to punish my naughtiness. And He is so very reliable when windows are open. No explaining God. So, the battle against the Nevada Clean Indoor ... Read the full blog post...
Blood, Sweat and Tears
May 28, 2009
Sunday night on Fremont Street was another free concert, Blood, Sweat and Tears. I have some good memories with their songs. Some of their greatest hits were: “You make me so very happy” “And when I die” “I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know” “ Lisa” “Listen to Me” So, there are a lot of them. I fought the crowds. I thought I did a brilliant thing by arriving a little early. I got there before 8pm. The ads said they were to start at 8pm. So I was watching this other band on the main stage, who were sort of creeping me out. I, like everyone else, was getting antsy and wanted to know where Blood, Sweat and Tears were. We discussed amongst ourselves. At 8:55pm, someone got on the loud speaker and told everyone that Blood, Sweat and Tears were going to be on the First Street stage. Oh, Maaaan! A whole lot of people ... Read the full blog post...
The Doors Tribute and strip photos
May 25, 2009
Saturday night was just too much fun with the Guess Who playing for free, and the Memorial Day celebration. Fremont Street, Downtown, Las Vegas was packed. I took some photos of the strip before I went downtown. I was up top of the Mirage parking lot. I didn’t want to be way up there, but I got one of the few parking spaces left. And that was still early in the night. The strip was packed, as was Downtown. I took a lot of video that night. I would have liked to have recorded just about the entire Guess Who show, but I only carry around so many little memory cards for the camera. It sure was a nice change to the tribute bands they’ve been having, to say the least. There was one tribute band there on the other stage though. I don’t know ... Read the full blog post...
