Las Vegas Gets a Presidential Diss
February 18, 2009
By now, everyone should be aware that Las Vegas is embroiled in a bit of a controversy with our newly elected overlord.
Two idiots are currently having a war of words over the legitimacy of Las Vegas as a destination for business meetings. Those two idiots are our President and our Mayor.
The Obama guy has stated in no uncertain terms that companies should not come to Las Vegas on the taxpayer dime.
Of course, Oscar Goodman had a conniption fit when our savior made the comment. He has called the statement “outrageous” and has demanded an apology from Barack Obama, who by the way, is black. For some reason the media has completely neglected to mention the President’s race in the past three and a half seconds, and I just wanted to throw it in there lest you forget.
Anyway, keep in mind that these “outrageous” statements and requests for apologies are coming from a former mob lawyer who swills martinis and walks around flanked by showgirls. It’s nearly impossible to take the statements seriously.
When you woke up with a horse head on your pillow back in the 70’s, Oscar was the guy they called in to convince you that you were overreacting.
Oscar Goodman calling someone “outrageous” is like Charles Manson calling someone “unstable”.
The entire drama is patently laughable, but that hasn’t stopped people across the country from stroking their chins and analyzing both sides of the argument.
Personally, I disagree with private corporations coming to Las Vegas on the public dime. Of course, I disagree with private corporations going anywhere on the public dime. I disagree with private corporations getting public dimes. Period.
Every financial institution in this country pushed as hard as they could for bankruptcy reform, but when those very same institutions are threatened with bankruptcy, who do they ask to pay their bills? That’s right, the exact same people they labeled deadbeats just a few short years ago. For some reason, the irony of this is lost on most people.
While I wholeheartedly agree that the recipients of “bailout” money should not be coming here, the question begs to be asked … why are companies getting taxpayer money at all?
It seems kind of disingenuous to rob people, give their possessions to others, and then admonish the recipients of the fenced loot to “keep it clean”.
Obama Christ and Congress is taking money from people at the point of a gun to give to private companies, and are turning around and questioning the morality of using the stolen money to play Roulette.
Really?
How about questioning the morality of … I don’t know … robbing people?
How about the morality of debasing the currency of a nation of 300 million people?
Seriously, am I missing something?
Obama (who is black by the way) doesn’t even know where the first trillion dollar handout went . All he knows is that he doesn’t want any of the cash going into video poker machines, or for tickets to see The Blue Man Group. Is playing Blackjack really the paramount insult to the American public in this whole mess?
Barack, however, is not the only one trying to scapegoat Vegas.
CEOs across the country have determined that our “image” is bad for business. They have concluded that it just doesn’t look right to hold meetings in Las Vegas. Paying themselves huge bonuses while the shareholders get shafted is cool. Hording the money instead of loaning it out is cool.
Las Vegas, they have determined, is the real problem.
That’s their story and they are sticking to it.
Four large companies have recently cancelled meetings and conventions that were scheduled to take place here this year. Just last week Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo cancelled their Vegas meetings.
As more and more companies are getting “bailout money”, fewer and fewer will be coming to Las Vegas. Apparently, the national image of our town is one of complete debauchery, so companies are deciding to move their meetings to other, less controversial cities.
As a matter of fact, Goldman Sachs has just moved its three day conference from the Mandalay Bay, to San Francisco. Yeah, San Francisco … the second most expensive city in the USA, where the annual cost of living is almost twice the national average.
But hey, at least they don’t have an image problem. San Francisco is as clean and as family-value oriented as they come. Nothing controversial has ever come out of San Francisco. Well, except hippies, drugs, gay bathhouses, OJ Simpson, and M.C. Hammer. I’m pretty sure that San Francisco has booze, drag shows, and prostitutes too.
Those things aren’t the problem, though. The problem is Blackjack and Video Poker. Those games are evil, and Obama (who is black) is absolutely right to worry about tarnishing the impeccable reputations of our large corporations by steering clear of these evil games.
How can we expect our financial institutions to foreclose on middle-class taxpayers and throw them out in the street if they stay up all night watching Donny and Marie perform at the Flamingo?
Seriously, I just don’t get the whole controversy, nor do I get how Las Vegas was dragged into it. We’re a city that specializes in meetings and conventions, and the people who are being told not to come here have done far more evil things than anything you can find in this city. With the exception of 6:5 Blackjack, of course.
Last but not least, everyone in financial distress should be encouraged to come to Las Vegas as soon as possible.
Unlike our financial markets, at least you have a chance at winning here.
