Fire one up for me

December 23, 2008

After the lovely stroll through the Christmas cactus garden it was time to eat.  We zipped on over to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza.

This isn’t just any pizza joint.  They do things in there like put shrimp on pizza.  It is one of those gourmet pizza places.  In the 80s everyone was talking about this and expected it to be the next rage, but it didn’t really catch on until now.  Personally, if someone put shrimp or abalone or something of that sort on my pizza I’d consider that a crime and handle that person accordingly.  If you want to mess up a perfectly good pizza with fat, juicy insects, be my guest.  Just keep them off mine, thank you very much.  It is pepperoni all the way for me.

They have some incredibly delightful salads on the menu and a small assortment of other dishes.  I was surprised to see hummus and baba ganoush on there.  There were so many things I wanted to try, but I stuck to pizza and salad.  I was in a ‘woodfired’ pizza place and I was thinking I should probably try a woodfired pizza!

The greek salad was huge and was split by the members of our dinner party.  There was still some left over when we were done.  It was a very good salad, although they went a little heavy on the vinegar in the dressing.  I’m not so sure they used olive oil either.  I suspect soy, but that’s fairly normal.

Our waiter was very attentive and stopped by the table often.  Our salad came a long time before the bread did which I was a little bit annoyed by, but I got over it.

My pepperoni pizza was very flavorful with lots of cheese and sauce.  I ordered the thin crust and unfortunately the sauce had made the middle of the pizza very soggy on the bottom.   That was a shame because around the edges it was perfect.  I needed to use a fork to eat the pizza.  I was getting ash all over me from the crispier parts of the crust but that was just part of the fun.  The pizza really did need some oregano on it.  It seemed to be missing that but it was very heavy on the garlic, which I loved.

Our waiter really meant well and tried to take care of us, but he needed some training.  Our salad was still being eaten and we were not anywhere near done with it when the pizza was plopped down on the table.  The bread and butter was quite late into the salad, he’d barge up to the table and often mutter to himself.  I really don’t fault him, as he really was quite attentive, I fault the management.  If they want to run a restaurant with a higher end clientele and menu then they should probably ‘make’ proper waiters out of the help.  Just saying…

The decor was cozy and warm and very attractively designed.  The booths are quite small, really only fit for two instead of four.  They aren’t quite big enough to be comfortable with three or four diners.  There was one wall in particular which I just loved that had plants and other wall hangings on that I couldn’t stop starting at.  I went to take a picture and my battery died.  DAMN it.  I got lazy and didn’t recharge the camera earlier in the day.  I HAVE to get another battery for those times.  So, I’m sorry you won’t see how pretty the place is.

They have an outdoor patio, but of course, it is so cold outside right now that no one uses it this time of year at night.

The prices are quite reasonable at about $10 for a one person pizza.  I actually took half of mine home because I was stuffed.  They have two sizes for each salad, an individual size for around $9 and a larger size to share for around $13.  Their entrees seem to hover around the $20 mark.

It would be very easy to stuff your gut in there with some very tasty dinner.  Wine is available on the menu, although I didn’t really check out the selection.  You could easily have a wonderful night in there for under fifty dollars for two.
