The Grand Lux Cafe, whichever
December 27, 2008
I know I am a royal pain to go out to dinner with. Seriously. Eat with me only if you dare. I’m going to have to take photos of damn near everything. I am amazed people will be seen with me at all in a restaurant. Oddly enough, unlike casino security, the waiters seem to love it.
On this particular day, I went to the Grand Lux in the Palazzo. There are two Grand Lux’s. One is in the Venetian and one in the Palazzo. After much grilling from my friend Marlene, we came to the conclusion that I had no idea where in the hell I’ve eaten and I haven’t. But I have had dinner at the Grand Lux on three occasions. And the bread was spectacular each and every time. Hey, in my defense, I’m a single girl and I do remember WHO I had dinner with each of those times. Some things are important and some are not. Who cares if it was in the Palazzo or the Venetian? I don’t even know when I’m in the Venetian or Palazzo. But I’ll always know who I’m with.
Okay, so on this day I was in the Palazzo and having an early dinner at the Grand Lux. I’m writing it down.
It was an early dinner and we did have to wait to be seated. The wait wasn’t very long though. Being that there was three in our party it took like five seconds longer than the two party people.
The dining room was very bright and cheery, but it was big with high ceilings. As you know, I’m more in to the cozy and quiet dining and this was neither. We were packed in there like sardines trying to pop our heads out of the can, but I got used to it.
The place was swamped and the waiters were doing everything they could to keep up. There were a couple of times we almost had to take a flying leap at the help to get their attention. Yeah, you got it, I wanted my bread and was tired of waiting for it.
Finally we found the ‘bread person’. There seems to be some overkill going on in there in the number of people who are going to bring you this and that. With a place so busy and cramped, I’d think just one person with a couple of tables would have served better, but I’m not a restaurant manager. Just an eater and a very hungry one on this particular day.
The toasty warm bread finally arrived and I dug in. I love this bread. Its fluffy, it’s warm, and soon it was oozing fresh butter.
I decided on the fish and chips. Normally I eat something a bit more interesting but I have had the fish and chips at this restaurant before and it was incredible. There is something about the taste of the fish they use. I kept going back to it on the menu and I simply HAD to have it again.
Marlene went with the chicken pot pie she had heard raves about and her husband, Alan, went with my fish and chips choice.
The pot pie, as it turned out, needed to be sent back to the kitchen for a reheat. It was luke warm at best and she was going to have none of it. It seemed to take an eternity for it to come back out of the swamped kitchen. Eventually it re-arrived and Marlene was very happy with it. She kept trying to feed Alan the ’sauce’, that’s Jewish for ‘gravy’.
Alan was agreeing with me with every bite that it was the best fish and chips he had ever had. He thought there was just something about that fish, too. We never did figure out what it was, maybe some culinary magical spell.
The portions at the Grand Lux are huge. Very huge. I have taken home left overs every time I’ve eaten there and had two more meals out of it. I’m not kidding.
Their menu has so many choices it is really difficult to decide what to pick. Sometimes I think they have everything you could possibly want on there. How they keep prepared for all those meals, I have no idea, but they seem to.
I got the best photo of the menu that I could, although it is still difficult to read. Have I mentioned lately how much I hate my camera?
Prices are excellent, anywhere from $10 to $20. They have a small selection of deserts and hit some of the better sweet ideas. You do need to order your desert about a half an hour in advance so they can cook it up to perfection for you. So once you finally figure out which of those entrees you’re hungry for, flip over to the deserts and order that too. You won’t be able to fit another bite into your belly when it arrives, but you can always take it home, haha.
As for which of these locations I had visited before… It was the Venetian. I’m pretty sure. I think. Well, wait…no, I’m pretty sure it was the Venetian. But then again, I think I was in the Palazzo location one time on my second time out with that one guy but we sat in the bar area and not the dining room. Maybe. Oh, who cares, he was adorable.

i remember passing this place in the Palazzo, a line a mile long. Bunch of young looking people trying to compare eachother on their attire. Looked at the menu, It seemed encouraging enough to venture in. I would have attempted to check it out but didn’t feel like waiting at the end of the Yuppie and Wasp crowd. Maybe next week…

Hey!! Did you guys steal “sauce” ( for gravy) from the French Canucks? LOL
Pronunciation: sose. As in “petite frites avec sauce”.
I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood, I’ve never heard them say sauce.
Oh and I’ve been to Grand Lux, we split a meal 3 ways. HUGE

Hey, Maureen!
Yeah, that is probably where I get that sauce = sauce thing. My Rabbi is French Canadian (Montreal).
Those meals there are SO huge! I can’t believe it. And the food is good and the prices are great.
I hope you’re keeping warm up there in the great, white north!

Ok, Montreal, that explains it. LOL
And no, we’re fucking freezing in Vancouver. We have snow, AND WE’RE NOT USED TO IT!!!
See you in Feb.
