No offense to my cab driver buddies, but never trust them. It’s not that they don’t know (well, some of them don’t) … they just don’t think you know. Strip clubs and massage parlor fares are priority #1 right now, and they will do anything they can to get you there.

My advice? If you know Vegas fairly well, tell them that you live here. They won’t want to talk to you after that, because they know you’ll catch them in their bullshiit, and they will try to dump you out fast to get a tourist who is not familiar with the town.

Always, and I mean, ALWAYS have the Nevada Taxicab Authority programmed into your cellphone. If there is ever a dispute, your ride will be free. They will do anything to prevent you from calling that number. It’s your ace in the hole.

The number is: (702) 668-4000

Never get in a cab without your cellphone, and that number. Put it on speed dial when you land. You will immediately gain the upper hand. Just be fair. Don’t use it unless they really screw you badly.

There are many, many good drivers, but also many, many hustlers.

It’s not exactly their fault. The entire cab system in this town is broken.

I agree with almost every point you made about the Palms, as my two favorite places for video poker are there and Hooters (because that's where I win the most). But I had lunch at the buffet one day a year ago and thought the food was pretty bad (and I've even enjoyed the Riviera and the Stardust buffets in the past).

By the way, I'm in Vegas right now. I know you believe that anyone from Vegas knows more than someone from out of town, but I definitely knew more than my cab driver, who gave us a bunch of wrong info and seemed more interested in steering us to a strip club or a massage parlor than anything else, even after we declined. Then again, of course I knew more than this taxi driver... I read Vegas Rex!

Ive only been in the Palms once. I tried to play poker but the line was a mile long. Hand written list. Rude staff. Only 2 tables going. There were 2 seperate rooms, one for limit and one for no limit. Not enough dealers to accomodate the number of players. I stayed and watched for an hour or so at the 1 table they had open and then left. I didnt play any blackjack at all there. That was a couple years ago.

Rex,
You mentioned the Buffet and gave your impression on the best and worst in town. Can you identify say the Top 5 or 10 in town? Value for money, edible and selection that you have found in your travels.

Yes, they have a decent sports book. I don't use it that often because my favorite (Hilton) is closer and I rarely go more than a block off-strip to wager sports, but it's a fine book at which to place a wager.

With regards to the traffic. I have absolutely no idea. The City and County is famous for showing up one morning, and proceeding to tear up perfectly good roads for no articulable reason. Sometimes there is a reason, but often there is not. This is a corrupt town, and construction companies milk us for all it is worth.

"Hey, we can make Valley View Blvd. slightly more smooth for only $150 million, and we come highly recommended by the Mayor's daughter's father in-law. Did we mention that we contributed $50,000 to your campaign last year?"

From what I have seen with my own two eyes in the past 5 years, most "road work" is busy work on the taxpayer dime. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Valley View last month, but there is now ... because they come in with bulldozers and ripped it up.

I wish I could tell you what the construction picture would look like a couple of months from now, but hell, I don't even know until I get in my own car and run into it. They don't give us much advanced notice ... if any notice.

When they need some overtime cash, I think contractors simply pick a random street, and break out the jackhammmers.

My guess is that a ton of the Federal "bailout cash" was earmarked for road work, and everyone is getting their hand in the pot as quickly as they can. After all, once you have already ripped the road apart, they can't change their mind and say that it was not necessary.

As a result, it seems as if they are ripping up roads left and right as quickly as they can.

When will it end?

I wish I could tell you.

Rex - how long is the mass of construction supposed to last? I am coming out to Vegas mid-July and have driven in the past (since I go outside the city for 1/2 my trips) and want to know if I'm screwed traffic wise.

Does the Palms have a racebook? Yes it does ! Vegas racebooks never get any attention even though 90% of them are garbage. The Palms has a decent one thanks for sharing a pic.
