Naked City
January 18, 2009
“Naked City” is perhaps one of the most famous neighborhoods in Las Vegas. Well, not so much famous as notorious.
It is not only well-known to locals, but if you mention Naked City to practically anyone in the U.S., they have at least heard of it. It has quite the reputation as being one of the seediest areas in the country.
At one point it was renamed “Meadows Village”, but nobody calls it that. It is, was, and always will be Naked City to us Las Vegans.
Naked City is a neighborhood in Las Vegas which is roughly bounded as follows:
North: Utah Ave.
East: Las Vegas Blvd.
South: Sahara Ave.
West: Industrial Rd.
To more accurately describe it to the layperson, Naked City encompasses pretty much everything within a quarter mile of The Stratosphere Hotel and Casino.
If you’ve ever stayed in the Stratosphere, and were assigned a west or north-facing room … then you’ve seen Naked City. It’s that ghetto underneath you. If you have ever parked in the Stratosphere self-parking garage, then you have driven through the far eastern edge of Naked City.
When you mention this neighborhood to most locals, it typically invokes fear and loathing as it is one of the most notorious areas in the entire Las Vegas Valley.
The neighborhood is plagued with drug dealing, prostitution, violence, and, well … pretty much every type of crime imaginable.
Of course, it wasn’t always like this.
The neighborhood was actually quite a tourist attraction back in the day. The area was a popular hangout and home for showgirls, and they used to lounge by the pools without clothes on … which is how the area got its name “Naked City”.
Hell, I’m sure it would have been my first stop if I was around back then.
Today, there are no naked showgirls to be found around these apartment complexes.
Now, the neighborhood is bad.
How bad?
Taxi drivers are advised to completely avoid the area. There is an average of almost two drug arrests per night in this very small geographical area … which is pretty impressive given that the police themselves often avoid the area out of fear for their own safety.
As a matter of fact, it is generally considered the most dangerous neighborhood not only in Las Vegas, but possibly the entire West Coast. I can’t think of any other ½ square mile in the United States with almost 500 drug arrests yearly.
The Stratosphere’s location, practically in Naked City, is one of the reasons that this otherwise fine property has developed quite a poor reputation over the years. The walk from the Sahara to the Strat takes people to the fringes of The Naked.
People riding the rides on top of the Stratosphere Tower aren’t nearly as afraid of falling off the tower, as they are of landing in Naked City. If the fall doesn’t kill you, one of the local neighborhood residents will.
I make it a point not to hang out in The Naked too often, but that is exactly where I found myself today. I happened to be looking for a particular place in the neighborhood, and I had to drive up and down every street in NC before I found my destination.
I actually kind of like the street names of this hood. New York Ave, Chicago Ave, Philadelphia Ave, Boston Ave, St. Louis Ave, … it really seems like they had different plans for the area. Perhaps a different city theme on every street? That would have actually been quite cool, but it never materialized.
What always strikes me about this place is that in the daytime, it actually doesn’t look all that bad. It’s just a bunch of apartments. It doesn’t look upscale, but it really doesn’t look terribly ominous either.
I was eyeballed by each and every person on the street.
Was I an undercover officer?
Some lost, hapless tourist ripe for a car jacking?
Somebody looking to score crack?
A rival gang member?
They did their level best to figure that out with each turn I made.
Hell, I even rode with the windows down.
As a matter of fact, the widely accepted test as to whether or not you have a nice car is to drive through Naked City with your windows down.
If you get a gun shoved in your face, the car is decent. If not, you are driving a piece of crap.
I failed the test. The gang bangers had absolutely no interest in my car, and frankly, I feel a little insulted.
I mean, at least show some respect and make a verbal threat or throw a rock or something. There is no need to be so insulting as to make absolutely no attempt to steal the car. That’s just cruel.
There have been some attempts to clean up this area over the years.
For instance, not only was the Strat built here, but so was the upscale Allure condos. I always wondered how the people in the million dollar condos felt about overlooking this neighborhood, but as they have all probably been foreclosed upon by now … most of Naked City could possibly be comprised of former Allure residents at this point.
While most of the nude showgirls are gone from the area, they haven’t completely abandoned the area.
Believe it or not, one of the most popular topless pools in the city for Strippers and Showgirls is called “Beach Club 25”, which is located on the 25th floor of The Stratosphere Hotel. This is what the pool looks like from ground level.
And here’s the pool from The Tower:
I guess some things never change.

Which area would be considered worse: Naked City or Nora 2?
Think I read a police sub station has gone in over on Sierra Vista in an attempt to clean up Crack City a bit. Guessing the impetus for that would be the proximity that area has to the convention center and the large number of tourists there. Looking at Google maps, looks like the Convention Center Monorail stop is maybe two blocks from the west end of Sierra Vista. Does it seem the cops have had any luck cleaning things up?
Wynn might have a harder time getting primo prices for eastern view rooms if it weren’t for the golf course pretty much blocking their line of sight into Nora 2.

Nora 2 is a larger in area, has some shopping areas and resturants, and there are actually parts of it that are not THAT bad.
Naked City is smaller, more concentrated, and has absolutely no economy other than drugs and prostitution.
Crime-per-block I would imagine that Naked City is worse, but I wouldn’t buy a summer home in either place.
The sub station has been there for awhile. I even have pictures of it somewhere. It is adjacent to the south side of the Convention Center but I haven’t noticed much of a positive difference in the actual neighborhoods.
In Vegas a common refrain is that the cops ARE the criminals, but that’s another post …

You can score some good crack at the 7-11 behind the Stratosphere. There are some hookers too. Get some crack and use it to get a hooker. It’s actually cheaper than paying with cash. A ten dollar rock will do it, and you’ll have some left over for yourself too!
As far as car jacking they havn’t tried to steal my 79 toyota yet, but i saw a few of those bangers looking at it with some degree of interest. Or maybe they just wondered what I was doing on their turf.
I love this town!

Years ago there was a guy arrested for murder in the Naked City. He was an ex-military guy, an Iraq war vet with PTSD. He lived in one of the apartments in the area and was so worried about being robbed, that he went everywhere with an AK-47.
While walking home from a 7/11 one night, a man and woman attempted to rob him. He shot both, killing the woman. He was booked but later released.

Hey Rex……In your opinion. Would you stay at the Strat knowing what you know and the area you just described….aka Naked City??
Written by Rex on January 23, 2009 at 8:00 am
Absolutely. I have stayed in the Strat many times and would not hesitate to do so again.
The people who crap on it are usually people who have never stayed there. The rooms are fine, the gaming is fine, and the tower is very cool, and the restaurant in the tower is a great experience.
The outside neighborhoods generally do not enter the casinos in Las Vegas. Most of the neighborhoods within 2 miles of The Strip are “bad” by most metrics.
Nora 2 (”Crack Alley”) begins directly behind the Wynn Golf Course and is adjacent to the Convention Center, but you would never know that when you are inside the properties.
The Palms is also not in a stellar neighborhood.
In Las Vegas, street crime from the neighborhoods very, very rarely finds it’s way into the tourist casinos. If any crime finds its way in, it’s usually things like petty theft or pickpocketing, but even that is tough with cameras everywhere. There is just not much gang banging to do in tourist casinos, and there is too much security … so the casinos are pretty much islands unto themselves, regardless of their surrounding neighborhoods.
Unless you look for trouble, such as a being a gang member, trying to score drugs, or trying to buy an “escort” off the street, you chances of being a victim of a violent crime on The Strip are exceptionally low.
I have a police scanner, and I hear far more calls to Harrah’s and the Imperial Palace than I do to the Stratosphere. Usually over petty drunken nonsense.
The Strat is actually on the southeastern fringe of Naked City, so if you stay on The Strip and walk south to the Sahara, etc, you won’t really be “in” Naked City per-se. If you find yourself on a street named after a city “New York Ave”, “Chicago Ave”, etc … then you may have an issue.
If you stick to Las Vegas Boulevard, or stay in any of the casinos, everything is cool. You’ll likely never even realize our little ghettos exist.

The Aztec Inn area!!!
Oh, yeah.
That is where I spent a week once in just an afternoon during a recent trip.
Quite a motley group in there I must say.
Including me that day

it would SHOCK the tourist if they knew what when on 2 blocks in any direction of the strip!
Naked City is bad bad bad
