EVO: Once

June 7, 2010

For no particular reason, I am going to start with the negatives: Battery Life Although lithium ion batteries take some time and "conditioning" to reach full capacity, I can already tell that an exhausted battery is going to be a frequent companion of mine.  This is particularly true while using the camera.  While taking photos and recording videos, I was able to "red" the battery in about 4 hours.  When I looked at the Android Battery Meter, it informed me that the camera function had consumed 63% of my battery overall.  As one of the most prolific photobloggers on the planet ... ouch.  Typical users will probably have better results as casual use drains the battery much more slowly, but I will need either a spare battery or an external recharger for "blogging".  Without question, battery life is THE achilles heel of the EVO. The Camera Speaking of the camera, beyond 8' (the range ... Read the full blog post...

EVO: Alive

"Specs don't matter" If you dabble in the tech field at all, you no doubt hear this refrain often.  The interesting thing about this saying is that it always comes from the same group of people. Apple users. You see, only in the reality distortion field of the iPerson does this phrase make any sense.  The rest of us are acutely aware that computers are all about specs. How fast can your computer execute instructions? How much data can it hold? What kind of physical media can it handle? Everything above is primarily determined by one thing: Specs. Because of this, when it comes to computers, nothing matters more than do specs. "Well Rex, specs don't make a computer elegant and usable!  Specs have nothing to do with your overall computing experience." Of course they do.  Anyone who uses an 8 year old computer with 512MB of RAM today will tell you that their computer is almost completely unusable. ... Read the full blog post...

3 Levels of Fun

June 5, 2010

For a couple of years I have been complaining about the blighted lot that sits immediately to the south of Planet Hollywood.  This parcel of land, almost dead-center strip, has always struck me as the most underutilized piece of real estate in the entire city. Today, however, I am happy to announce that this is all about to change. This week, the owners of the land annnounced that they are going to build something new and amazing on this particular corner. What, exactly, are they going to build? Well, hold on to your hats, because this is going to be the most exciting news you've heard in the past sixty, or possibly seventy seconds. Coming soon to the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon will be .... Drumroll please ... Wait for it ... Wait a little more for dramatic effect ... Can you feel the excitement ... Here comes the big announcement .... A Walgreens. Oh Hallelujah!  It's like a ... Read the full blog post...

Anonymous Alcoholics

June 4, 2010

Tuesday night was rather lackluster from a gaming standpoint. For the first time in a long time I played some cards at the Bellagio and I ended up getting my rear end handed to me when I slow-played Aces.  As bad as this sounds, I wish that it was the greatest injustice I was forced to endure on this particular night. After taking my beating like a man and congratulating the victor of the hand (I have no idea why I do this since I don't mean a word of it), I decided to expedite my trip home by taking the fabulous Las Vegas Monorail. I left the Bellagio through the north boulevard entrance, crossed the skywalk, climbed down to street level and started walking toward the Bally's sports book.  Entering through the rear of Bally's allows one to bypass three sets of escalators and also allows you to avoid the casino floor. ... Prattle of the Sexes

June 2, 2010

Over the past week or so, I've received more than a few pieces of correspondence from people who seem to be surprised that I have not addressed a particular injustice that is being perpetrated in my own backyard.  (Damn, that was a long sentence.) Apparently there is a civil rights crisis being perpetrated by Wynn Resorts as we speak.  A crisis which threatens the very foundation of our democracy, and one which represents another step in our unobstructed march toward totalitarianism. You see, the Encore Beach Club opened last weekend, and their admission structure has become the subject of some armchair controversy.  For those who are not yet aware, admission to the Encore Beach Club is officially $40 for men and $30 for women. They are also charging hispanic people $70 to enter and black people $90. Okay, I'm just kidding about those last two, but can you imagine ... Anyway, my opinion ... Read the full blog post...

Stripwalking

May 31, 2010

Two weeks ago I fractured my ankle and was advised to stay off of it.  Of course, I didn't exactly comply with this advice, but I did minimize the damage by riding around town in my Six Fo' Impala more than usual.  Today, I decided to push the issue a bit, and I spent most of the afternoon walking and playing amongst the Memorial Day Weekend crowd. While I would absolutely describe this weekend as "very crowded" ... it's not quite as busy as I was expecting it to be. Now, usually when I say this, somebody comes online screaming "What are you talking about?! I was there this weekend and it was soooooo crooowwwwwwdeeeeed!!!"  Everyone wants to think that they were here during the most epic weekend ever, and the prevailing wisdom seems to be that if I don't declare it to be packed, I ... That 70’s Post

May 30, 2010

Friday was the first night of "Summer of the '70s" Downtown, and to show support for the effort, I decided to spend a couple of hours patronizing Fremont Street and soaking in the new theme. Before availing myself of the entertainment, however, I had to eat, and this time around I decided to fill up on the Golden Gate's $3.99 "large" shrimp cocktail.  Honestly, in my several dozen trips to eat at the Golden Gate, this was the first time I had ever noticed the "large" option, and I am upset at myself for this.  Had I paid attention to the menu earlier, I would have been ordering one of these instead of two of the cheaper offerings.  The bigger cocktail is more appealing to me because the "large" shrimp are actually large.  I'm not sure if they fall into the "jumbo" realm, but they are damn close, and ... Let The Games Begin

May 29, 2010

It's hard to believe that it's already been a year, but today kicked off the 2010 World Series of Poker. Of course, the Main Event still doesn't begin for another month, but it feels like only yesterday that I was perusing the halls of the 2009 event. When I went over to the Rio to check out the preliminary tournaments today, I ran into a situation which I had heard about, but had never witnessed first-hand. Standing outside near the red carpet, random grinders were cutting deals with other players and benefactors.  People were showing up to the event without money and were trying to get staked on the spot.  It kind of reminded me of trying to get picked for dodgeball. One guy was saying "I came in 4th at the blah blah tournament last month", and another guy was pimping his son and trying to get him into a tournament.  ... Read the full blog post...

The Lady Luck Revival

May 27, 2010

Lady Luck is a somewhat imposing Downtown casino that was shuttered in 2006, expected to re-open a year later ... yet still sits dormant. Over the last year or so, I've received numerous inquiries into the state of affairs at the Lady Luck.  Unfortunately, to all of the inquiries I have received, my answer has always been the same: I don't know. While I am acquainted with a fair number of people who work in casinos which are actually open, I honestly wouldn't know who to contact when it comes to projects which are in the works.  Even if I did know who to contact, I doubt I would do so.  There is a huge difference between a "blogger" and a reporter.  A blogger writes a web log of his/her personal experiences and opinions, while a reporter investigates facts and is assigned to stories of which he/she may ... Positive Creep

May 26, 2010

Yesterday, construction began on a brand new piece of art. This is a display which will adorn my own neighborhood, and it is expected to be completed in three months. A short, mainstream explanation of the work-in-progress follows: We already have the Bow and Arrow Motel, the Horseshoe, and the Silver Slipper along Las Vegas Boulevard North, as well as the Vegas Sign, Martini Glass, and more along East Fremont Street. Now, another set of street installations is coming to the downtown area. Las Vegas has commissioned artist Dennis Oppenheim to create a gateway to the Arts District in downtown Las Vegas. His previous work consists of other outdoor installations around the world in locations including Lithuania; Kansas City, Missouri; Ventura, California; and Seattle’s Olympic Park. The local project will display a pair of 45-foot-tall paint brushes angled in over the street. Each will be topped by a set of lights that will shine a rainbow of ... Read the full blog post...
