The High Cost of Self Esteem
May 24, 2010
"Would you like to buy me a drink?" Up until this point, my evening was actually going pretty well. "What?", I responded to the young lady who had just parked herself beside me. I was hoping that I had misunderstood her but I was sure that I hadn't. "I said I'm going to let you buy me a drink", she reiterated, this time with even more self-confidence than before. I looked at the woman, this time more intently. She was in her mid 20's, had light brown hair ... and was about a 6.5 on a scale of 1-10. "That's a very generous offer", I said, "but I'm not even buying my own drinks." Technically, I was correct. For the first time in a long time, someone else was picking up my tab. It's not cheap being VegasRex since the money to grace others with my wonderful presence usually comes out of my own pocket. ... Read the full blog post...
Filling The Gap
A few weeks ago, while standing on the balcony of a Sahara penthouse suite, I looked to the lot immediately south of the casino and asked "Are they supposed to build something here?" The person whom I was with had no idea, and when I later posed the question in my own forums, I realized that almost nobody had an answer. The former home of the Wet n' Wild amusement park has been sitting vacant since 2004, and like so many other projects around town, it's devolved into little more than an eyesore. Yesterday, on my way back from an absolutely thrilling hold 'em session at Caesars Palace, I passed the vacant lot again and noticed a new fence which read "10,000 New Jobs For Nevada - Silver State Arena". Huh ... what?! Good god, how on earth had I managed to miss this development? They are building a stadium in my own backyard ... Read the full blog post...
Freaky Friday
May 23, 2010
Located in an unimpressive building on Industrial Road, only a block from the Trump Tower, sits a somewhat unlikely Las Vegas attraction. The Erotic Heritage Museum has been around for awhile, but for some reason, I've always just assumed that the place was a trap. I envisioned going inside, staring at a couple of posters on a wall, and then being herded into a strip club where I would be mercilessly hustled for lapdances until I was able to summon my inner ninja to stun my attackers and slip out the back door. It is entirely possible that I have lived in this town for too long, because I no longer trust anyone or anything here, and my natural assumption is that everything is a complete scam. More often than not, I'm correct ("Hey, how long are you in town for? Do you want to see a show?"), but after hearing some ... Read the full blog post...
Where’s The Gambling?
May 21, 2010
How about a round of applause for a little more Downtown redevelopment ... The Las Vegas City Council today unanimously approved leasing a city-owned, three-story former retail store to a pair of developers who hope to turn it into a nightclub that will help light up downtown's Fremont East District. The building, at the southeast corner of Fremont Street and Sixth Street, is envisioned to have a nightclub within about a year to a year and a half, and will also be used for retail space and condominiums, according to the developers. Terry Caudill, who owns the Four Queens and Binion's casinos, and Carlos "Big Daddy" Adley and his wife, Ava Berman Adley, who own the Velvet Margarita in Hollywood, have formed a limited liability corporation to lease the property, called 601 Fremont LLC. "We're going to bring in some of the top retail, restaurant and amenities, literally in the country to this spot," ... Read the full blog post...
We Are Beautiful, No Matter What The Trop Says
May 19, 2010
Even though I had transit difficulties on Monday, I was still able to make it to the Tropicana without too much trouble, and while I was there I decided to get some updated shots of their "new" pool. Of course, Monday just happened to be the most overcast, windy day we had experienced in several weeks, but such is the dark cloud that ostensibly hovers over my head. It's not that Jesus doesn't love me, he's just not big on public displays of affection when it comes to yours truly. In any event, the "new and improved" Tropicana Pool has been open for much of this month, but as you can clearly see from the photographs, it is not yet finished. At this point, the pool does not look all that different from the "old" pool. Since I have always been a huge fan of the Tropicana swimming hole, this is certainly ... Read the full blog post...
ACEs Cracked
May 18, 2010
Well, I tried to be a "green" citizen. I tried to prevent global warming. I tried to save trees, plants, and baby dinosaurs. Despite my best efforts, however, the Las Vegas Regional Transit Authority told me to go fornicate myself with a sharp stick ... although not in those exact words. You see, shortly after 1pm today, I walked over to the Stratosphere ACE stop with the full intent to buy a one-way pass (which the RTC calls a "2 hour all access pass") to go to the Tropicana. Why was I buying only a one-way pass? Because the person with whom I was meeting with at the Trop had rented a car for the week, and I anticipated returning home not on the ACE, but in a private vehicle. Sounds reasonable, no? Apparently this was not reasonable at all, because when I got to the ACE ticket machine, I quickly learned that the RTC had completely eliminated ... Read the full blog post...
Summer of the ’70s
May 17, 2010
After the very successful "Summer of '69" effort, I was strongly hoping that Fremont Street would bring us another theme this year, and it appears that I will be getting my wish: It's going to be 102 days of dy-no-mite surprises as Fremont Street Experience brings you the "Summer of the '70s" festival and free concert series. Headlining bands as well as weekly tribute bands will fill downtown with sounds of the '70s including disco, classic rock and more. Although I started getting burned out on tie-dye halfway through the summer, when all was said and done, I thought that what Fremont did last year was brilliant. The free concerts, costumes, and custom light shows really added an element of fun to Downtown that surprised me. Before the Summer of '69 theme kicked off, frankly, I was skeptical. The whole thing just seemed too corny, and when I first heard about it, I ... Read the full blog post...
Indecent Counter-Proposal
Well, another Triple Crown race, another loss. My longshot strategy is 0-2 this year. I know, "that's why they call them long shots", but where the hell is equine Jeff Gillooly when you need him? For the Preakness, I decided to give my money to the Sahara book, but when the lone guy behind the counter refused to take his eyes off of a televised game to answer my questions, I got back in the car and made a quick drive to the Hilton. Hey, Nevada Public Utilities Commission, do you see that ... the competitive marketplace actually works. When I say that "I" drove to the Hilton, I don't mean that I actually operated the gas pedal and the steering wheel. The fact is, I only drive a small percentage of the time I go somewhere by vehicle. I hate driving, I know just enough people in this town that I don't ... Read the full blog post...
Neon Diarrhea
May 15, 2010
Now that it is officially a new decade, I am updating the pictures I have for every property in Las Vegas. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have photographically covered every inch of Las Vegas Boulevard from the North Las Vegas border to the M Resort, but keeping them up to date is a continuous process. For the last week or so, I have focused my attention on the area between Flamingo Rd. and Harmon Ave., and from my own perspective ... I think this area is now the very best that the Las Vegas Strip has to offer. At this point, I might go so far as to say that this half mile stretch of road is the Las Vegas Strip. At least from a visual standpoint. I think it is fair to say that the Las Vegas Strip is in a rut. In the last decade, The ... Read the full blog post...
Scam Vegas
May 14, 2010
So far, 2010 has been a somewhat unusual year in Las Vegas from my perspective as a resident. While there have always been copious amounts of panhandlers, bums, and "can you spare some change so I can buy baby formula" scammers in this town, in the past several months, the numbers of these groups have really picked up. Allow me to give you an example. About an hour ago, as I was arriving home, a man dressed in a city worker's uniform greeted me at my driveway. I rolled down my window to see what he wanted, and he said "Hello, I am with the Las Vegas Safety Department and I am here to repaint your house number on the curb. It's almost worn off and it needs to be visible in case of emergency". "Alright, whatever", I said, and I began rolling up my window. Before it reached the top, the man shouted out ...
