Happy Birthday Elvis, where ever you are
January 8, 2009
Today Elvis Presley fans everywhere celebrate his birthday. He would have been 74 today, had things gone better. He died in 1977, regardless of what they might tell you in Kalamazoo. Nowhere are Elvis sightings more prevalent than in Las Vegas, though. He lives on. And on and on and on.
My mom was a huge fan of Elvis, like thousands and thousands of other women of her generation. I was required to stand in line for tickets for her on a cold day in Kalamazoo a few years before he died. It made mom so excited and I was glad to do that for her.
There is no huge extravaganza planned today for Elvis, which is a bit surprising. The fan club will be at the Hilton at 6:30pm tonight to do their annual vigil. The Hilton is where Elvis was a headliner from 1969 until 1976, breaking attendance records. The Hilton was then known as the International Hotel. Elvis lived on the 30th floor in room 3000 when he was doing his show. So, this is why the fan club meets there each year on this day.
This weekend there will be a couple of Elvis shows you can attend. There is the usual Darren Lee “American Superstars” tribute show at the Stratosphere. A reader told me it was a great show. She said he doesn’t look all that much like Elvis but he sounds just like him and did a great job. Show times are 6:30pm an 8:30pm, Friday and Saturday this weekend. Dennis Wise will perform his annual Elvis birthday concert Saturday at the Chrome Lounge at Santa Fe Station. There is the “Big Elvis” free show at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon. Johnny Fortuno will be performing his tribute to Elvis at the Cannery. Johnny Fortuno is more of a skinny Elvis.
Fat Elvi, Skinny Elvi, I’m sure there is an Elvis for everyone. What ever happened to the flying Elvi anyway?? They have a website and seem to still be around but have no performance dates on their website currently.
If there is anything going on tonight besides the vigil at the Hilton, I’m sure the fans can fill you in on where to go and all the finer details of the event.
