Helping Todd Paul get into his pants
July 7, 2009
I went to Hooters tonight to show those people what real ones look like. Of course, I took protection, you know, in case they rushed me. Actually, I was going to review the new comic in town, Todd Paul. My buddy from my massage school days, Jody, tagged along to kill some time while he was in town.
The local Fox morning news had already been to see this guy. Todd, not Jody, keep up! They had Extreme Amy there in Hooters early one morning a few weeks ago. I was really enjoying this absolute lunatic and what he was putting Amy through over my coffee and morning chain smoking. I was anxious to see this crazy man in person and tonight was the night.
Upon entering the theater we were given 3-D glasses. Well, there is a clue this isn’t your average night in a comedy club, now isn’t it? We settled in to some of the tall seats because I was feeling like being tall. Wouldn’t ya know it, some really tall guy sat right in front of me. Some nights I have all the luck.
The show starts with some dancing guys. They were pretty cool and I must say, I will probably be going to see them later. I guess they have their own show. After a short, funny dance routine the warm up comic came out and got us going. She was really good and it got my hopes up for a great show. Who says there are no funny women comics?
When Todd Paul came out he greeted us, we all clapped and whopped it up. And then the intro started on the screen behind him. He got the guy in charge of that to stop it. It was one of those hot dog chasing bun things that lets you know there is one minute to show time. Another glitch or two like that continued, but he handled it well and everyone had a good chuckle over it. Hey, this is Hooters, not the big time. Although having your own show at Hooters is a fairly big deal!
It wasn’t long and Todd was pulling some, poor unsuspecting guy out of the audience. He was too shy to get on the stage so he moved on to the “Nascar” side of the room, as the warm up comedienne kept calling it. He found just the right guy and up onto the stage he went. We cheered, but we pitied him. Nobody wants to be the guy who gets called up to the stage. Nobody.
If you get right down to it, Todd Paul’s entire stage show is just one card trick. It is a really, really long card trick. Of course he wanders off to do this or that and takes you to other places entirely, but eventually he’ll get around to reminding you that we’re doing a card trick here. And then he’ll go off into a whole other trick or joke, always coming back to that card trick.
He reminds me a little of Bobcat Goldthwait, not the screaming stuff, he didn’t do that at all. It is more of Bobcat’s boyish manner and he’s just the kid who is looking for a little fun. With Todd Paul, it is going to be at the expense of someone who was foolish enough to come up onto the stage. Just a little fun. Everything is an adventure and he takes you right along with him.
He isn’t nearly as much of a lunatic as I thought he was going to be. I was prepared for a lot more high energy than what went on. He methodically went through his jokes, props, and a few audience members to pull it all off.
At one point, yeah – during the card trick, he had two guys on stage. He was giving them directions on what they needed to do. But the directions are never quite what they should be and the poor sucker who got on the stage ends up being told that, “really, it is my fault, you are not responsible for ruining the card trick.” Then he would look at the audience with that “what an idiot!’ look on his face. And he would continue on.
Eventually he did get up on the unicycle with a sword in his hand. He didn’t fall once, but I was almost expecting it. This is a small stage. There should not be a comedian on a unicycle there, haha.
Todd also juggles and he did some of that. Come to think of it, I think that was actually after the card trick! Oh wait, no it wasn’t, it was part of the card trick. He also does this really awesome thing with crystal balls. He rolls them up and down his arms. It is so cool. You just get mesmerized by those balls rolling, his grace in handling them, and the beauty of the rolling glass.
He doesn’t do much in the way of dancing in his stage act, but he does enough where you’re left wanting more. He is one sexy dancer and seems to hide that well. Ladies, if you want to see a guy who really knows how to move, this would be the show to catch. You’ll get just enough of that to make you never forget him. Just saying…
To end the show, given that he’s standing there in his boxers on a cold, black stage, he has a couple of girls come up to hold up his pants. He climbs up on the bar stool and actually jumps into his pants. Ta Da!
This is a very talented performer, far better than a lot of them on the strip. He engages the audience from the start of his show until the very end. Everyone is relaxed and having a blast watching him. He’s like your funny best friend at a party, but unlike your drunken friend, Todd Paul is actually very funny.
Tickets for this show are only $24.95 and that includes getting your friend in too. It is far too cheap for this performer. It is a must see. Todd Paul is in the theater at Hooters, show time is 7pm and lasts slightly longer than an hour.

I saw the show right after Todd Paul started at Hooters, i thought it was very entertaining, sounds like he may have added a few things and thats cool (sucks when you take a friend and its the same show you already saw) maybe i’ll go see it again. great that its early enough for a mom and dad (me and my wife) to get out and see it with dinner before and not be home to late. my wife also wanted to go back for the beefcake show after maybe i’ll send her with a few girl friends.

Yeah, that beefcake show is pretty high on my todo list.
I plan to go really soon! I’m pretty sure I’ll be going to see Todd Paul again too.
Those early shows are really nice. There is still either plenty of time left to hit the strip and gamble, or get to bed early, depending…
