Mr. Las Vegas – George Wallace
October 17, 2009
Since 2004, George Wallace has ruled in comedy in Las Vegas. No, not the shot guy and former racist governor of Alabama, but George Wallace the funny guy! Sure, there are other great comics here in Sin City, but they just aren’t George Wallace. He’s special. He’s a natural. I feel like I’ve been a fan my entire life. George signed with the Flamingo Casino for a thirty-day contract back in 2004, and he has been there ever since putting laughter in the hearts of the locals and the tourists.
I first saw him in person last year. The price of his ticket was more than I could afford at the time. George Wallace likes to give back to the community, though. He knows locals have a tough time coming up with show ticket money and he was also interested in people going to the polls to vote in the last national election. He came up with a great idea. He sent out a press release telling the locals that if they brought their “I Voted” sticker to the ticket booth, he’d make sure they got a ticket for free to his show. As it turns out, that was maybe a little less than legal because in a sense it is paying people to vote. Silly rules. The offer was publicly withdrawn because of that pesky rule, but if you took your “I Voted” sticker to the ticket booth, they did give you a ticket. So I got to see him that night last November.
But that is George Wallace, he likes to give back to the community. He is far from one of those “I’m famous and it is all about me now” kind of guys. He is a loving, caring, brilliant man who’s comedy comes to him quite naturally. He donates his time and talent to a number of charitable organizations here in the Las Vegas valley including Three Square. He was most recently a part of the Jerry Lewis Telethon. He frequently donates tickets to his show to be auctioned off for various charitable events including the Explore Knowledge Academy Spring Carnival that provides much needed supplies to students and teachers at that school and to the College of Southern Nevada Foundation which provides scholarships for students to begin or continue their collegiate careers. He’s also performed at the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation’s Grand Slam for Children benefit concert and has for the past several years. Also, in giving back to the entertainment industry, a number of performers have launched the next phases of their careers with his help, including most recently, the all-male accapella group MOSIAC.
George Wallace’s show isn’t G-rated, but it is pretty close. He uses a cuss word now and then, but the general premise of the show is fairly clean. He is famous for his ‘Yo Mamma’ jokes and his “I Be Thinkin’’ routines. He spends a lot of his time on stage just talking to the audience members and joking around with them, almost always getting the better of them. He’ll ask where the person is from, and then he’ll tell them he was just there yesterday. It usually takes a few cities before people catch on it is a running gag. Sometimes the person in the audience will turn it back on him and let him know he or she was just there yesterday!
It is so nice to just sit back and enjoy George Wallace’s humor. He has the audience in the palm of his hand from the moment he walks on stage. He’s just so lovable you just want to run up and give him a big bear hug. He has you laughing from the beginning of the show right up until the end.
Here is a video I found of him on YouTube that has some of his stage show featured:
Every night the show is different. He has some set observations and jokes he uses night after night but the majority of the show is fresh nightly. He’ll even pull an audience member out and put them up on the stage to sing a song, or like last night, show everyone the guy did not listen to his wife about wearing those shorts! For their participation they get a George Wallace CD or a T-shirt or some other fun prize. Many times he’ll feature an up and coming musical act and give them some stage time. On those nights, his show will run long because he knows you came to see him, so he makes sure you get all of the George Wallace time too.
Last night he made the preachers, ministers and reverends stand up in the audience. Of course, George makes them stand there for what must seem like an eternity. “Now, keep standing, don’t sit down yet,” he says. And they stand and they stand and they stand. Finally when he’s thoroughly grilled each one of them at the great expense of the person standing but to the hilarious laughter of the rest of the audience, he lets them take their seat once again. He was pretty easy on the preachers last night. Last year it was random people he pulled out of the audience and made them stand up on stage. He wouldn’t let them go back to their seats for what seemed a half an hour. The preachers didn’t have to take the stage.
I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up and he said, “I really thought I wanted to be a minister then I realized that I wanted to be a comedian and knew that at an early age. No matter, I graduated from the University of Akron, Ohio, with a degree in transportation in case this whole comedy thing didn’t work out so good I’d have that to fall back on. Why Transportation? People will always need to send stuff across the country and across the world.”
George is no stranger to performing. He’s been on numerous television shows as well as the entertainment type shows like “The Tonight Show.” He said his first television appearance was, “1978, “The Big Laff Off.” Up to then I was in night clubs in New York.”
He loves to interact with his fans on Facebook. He doesn’t just have a Facebook page, he actually uses it. He’ll post jokes almost daily. There is also a weekly Yo Mamma day where he tries to get his over 3,000 Facebook friends to try their hand at coming up with a new Yo Mamma joke. He will also post coupons so that you can get a discount on a ticket to his show. If you participate on Facebook, you probably want to be his friend.
It was a great show last night. I just love George Wallace. He was born to help us laugh, and I’m grateful for that. Even with the late start time of his show, you won’t be tired. You’ll forget all about the clock and just enjoy. You’ll still be smiling in the morning.
I asked him is there was any chance of bumping that pesky Donny (Donny and Marie Osmond use the theater for their show before Wallace) to the late slot so us old baby boomers can see you at an earlier time? Wallace replied, “No chance of that. Donny & Marie can’t stay up late, they got a curfew!”
George Wallace performs nightly at the Flamingo Casino at 10pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Tickets are $39.95 to $75.00 per person.
