And they're OFF!
November 1, 2008
The last remaining Sigma Derby game is at the MGM Grand. I was really surprised to see it because I had thought they had all been removed. Ah, but there it was, in all its glory.
It is a little table with horses. You put your quarter in and then the race starts. You watch the little mechanical horses race to the finish line. Yeah, it is simple, but oh is it fun! The night I ran into it the table was frequently full. People love this stuff. While all these new fancy, schmancy video machines are getting bigger and more complicated, there sits the Sigma Derby. We still love old fashioned, simple games after all. That Sigma Derby is never lonely.
Betting at times is still as intense as it is at the card tables. These people are only playing quarters, but you can see how seriously they are taking it. I have no idea how the thing works or even if there is any strategy to it. I just like feeding that thing quarters and watching the horsies go around and around.

It is probably the only one left in Las Vegas? I found a working model at the Horizon at Lake Tahoe last month. Busy all the time. Now if I could only find some of the old “flip it” around. You remember those? You would put a quarter in the slot and those piles of quarters would fall off the cliff if your quarter hit the sweet spot. The last one I saw was up in Virginia City about a year ago.
