KISS on New Years Eve!

Kiss Tribute Band

Kiss Tribute Band

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m not a KISS fan.  When they popped up on the rock scene, I declared them Alice Cooper wannabees and wrote them off.  I never really paid much attention to them.  I never understood their popularity really.  But a lot of people younger than me treat them like they are just the best thing to ever happen to rock and roll.  Maybe its a generational thing, maybe I just don’t know a good band, I do not know.

One thing for sure, this KISS tribute was a fairly big deal.  So I participated and took some photos.  I’m not going to miss out!

Well, the photo thing didn’t work out so well, as you can see.  Have I mentioned lately how much I hate my camera? There was no way I was going to get a good photo.  Every one of them was blurry to some level or another. I even tried my sports macro or whatever that setting is called. I was in a packed crowd being bumped and well, I was short that night.  One woman in front of me was 6′5″ tall. One guy on my left was the same towering height.  I’m not kidding.  I know a couple of guys who are 6′2″ – 6′3″ and she is a lot taller than them, without a doubt.  And oh boy, was she a KISS fan!  She was clapping and singing and jumping around.

I moved around a bit and squeezed to one side and stepped in front of some other people and switched the camera to video to at least get something for you to watch.  I think it ended up being a much better choice than photos.  Well, aside from the guy with the frickin’ hat in front of me on my left.  That hat pretty much blocked the left side of the stage for me and sometimes the entire stage…

The two girls I ended up next to were keeping me in stitches.  They had a real problem with “Amazon Woman”, as they called her.  I don’t know why really, other than maybe Amazon Woman was in front of them and they were about 5 feet tall.  Most of what they were saying I won’t repeat but my God, they were funny.  I had a great time smashed up against everyone with them in the crowd.  I probably should have asked for their phone numbers.  These are just the kind of girls I get along well with on nights out on the town.

Once the tribute band was finished, they started the debut of the canopy tribute.  The actual band KISS did that canopy video in conjunction with the Fremont Street Experience.  It was pretty cool.

I have no real way of knowing if the tribute band was as good as KISS, as I’m not a fan.  I do know, though, that they put on a tighter performance than the other tribute bands I saw last night.  They were rockin’ out.  The other bands would sort of step three times, do this gesture the rockstar does and then step two times… you know what I mean?  It was overly rehearsed.  But not the KISS band, they just rocked.  I found it more enjoyable and a lot more believable.

When the tribute started, some of the tribute band came out and were talking to people in the crowd.  Some of the fans went nuts.  I think maybe they thought it was the actual band??  After a few minutes things calmed down behind me.  The guys stayed and watched the next tribute band from the sidelines and rocked out with everyone else.

Am I KISS fan after all of this?  Well, no.  I still think Alice is the way to go.  I still don’t get KISS, haha.  I did have a great time, though!  I’d probably go see this band perform again for a crowd.  The crowd loooooves them and it’s a rockin’ fun time.
