The Goings On in the Las Vegas Valley
November 2, 2009
Driving around Las Vegas you see some weird stuff sometimes. It is always interesting, but sometimes a little strange.
The cops have been in the news quite a bit lately. They turn up DOA in car accidents from time to time. Each time it happens, people start yelling on the evening news about it. Some people side with the cops and some side with the person who was hit by them. The debate rages on. Even the police department is saying things need to change in their organization lately. The last officer who died was speeding down the road at 100 mph or more and not only did not have his siren and lights going, he wasn’t wearing a seat belt. This seems to be a recurring theme lately.
In the past week or so, I have seen an unusual number of police officers on the road I take home from my office. Twice now I have seen motorcycle cops weaving through the traffic at stop lights for no reason other than to be first in line. I’m talking driving in between cars in order to get to the front of the line at the red light. How safe is that? One day three of them did it. They chatted with each other and when the light turned green they all took off. Yep, side by side in the lane. I thought they taught me in driver’s education not to do that. Anyway, they seem to be a happy bunch, but not a great example of driving skills, I’m afraid.
I’m not one to go taking photos of police officers in Las Vegas. I feel this is probably not a safe practice. Just appreciate the fact I risked my life to get that photo. Just kidding!
In my other cruses around the strip, the following car was found in the Flamingo parking garage. It just begs the question, “So, like, just when did he get caught with Jackie?” Was it the day the photo was taken and he was working at the casino? Was it days before and he was wearing his shame? At any rate, I’m thinking the graffiti artist/X was real pissed off at him! I’ll bet this was the one and only time he was happy he doesn’t drive a Ferrari.
In other news around town, the casinos are still leaking funds like water through a sieve. This morning Boyd Gaming was attempting to buy Station Casinos, again. The are petitioning the court asking for them to get a value placed on it. The Wynn posted more huge losses and Harrah’s Entertainment says they lost a billion last quarter. Yeah, a billion dollars, that would be with a ‘b’. Of course, that is for the entire Harrah’s company, not just Las Vegas’s casinos.
The Fountain Bleu still has its issues in trying to come back to life but nothing ever seems to work. So there it sits. Our landscape is just one big construction zone. Until we get a 1980s dot.com bubble style of money flowing again we’re just going to sit like this. It is ugly in more ways than one, I’m afraid. It really sucks to live around it too. We have horrible dust problems here and all that construction just sitting there is really adding to it.
I’m sorry I do not have photos for you, but yet another experimental aircraft fell out of the sky last week in North Las Vegas. If I have my count correct this is the third in the past many months. The aircraft are not so much experimental as they are homemade. I’m sure they are flying all day long over there in North Las Vegas and nothing happens, but every couple of months one meets the ground in the most unattractive way. This last mishap was safer than the rest. The pilot lived and the person was fine in the SUV he hit on the road. The ones before were not so lucky and several people died.
That’s all the news I have today. For Halloween I went as a sweaty, feverish, menopausal middle aged woman with the flu. I didn’t exactly go anywhere. I just handed out penny toys to the massive amounts of kids who came to my door. It seems they enjoy spiders and glow-in-the-dark snakes for Halloween instead of candy. Which was good, because I wasn’t about to go to the store and spend real money on candy.
I’m feeling much better now, thank you. I hope you had a good one!
