Biggest Minibike Race

Biggest Minibike Race

My mom wouldn’t let me ride a minibike.  Maybe I could have had a career riding a minbike, but nooooo, I was a girl and couldn’t get on the minibike.  My brother, who was three years younger than me got a minibike.  He snuck me on the bike once and I got a nasty burn on my leg from the muffler.  That hurt for months. I suppose I’ll a little off topic, and a little bitter about the whole minibike fiasco, so I’ll get to the point here.

MINIBIKES!  The biggest minibike race in the world will be at the Orleans Area on May 1st.  Motocross Magazine calls it the best in minibike racing.  There will be about seven hundred riders and stars Jeremy McGrath and Derek Costella are expected to be there.

There are two new classes this year.  First, the MM8 Vintage pit bikes with twin shocks.  Secondly, the MM16 Stock/Mod play bikes, the big brother of the pit bike family and expected to become another staple of the biggest minibike race.  Do I know what they are?  Hell no, I don’t.  You can blame my mother of blessed memory for that.  I do.

Tickets are on sale now and are $22 – $33, plus taxes and fees.  You can purchase tickets at the Orleans Area Box Office by calling 702-284-7777.

When I lived in Carlsbad, California, the city was hopping when the motocross came to town.  It was a pretty big deal in the 70s and 80s.  I don’t know how it is received these days.  Well, maybe my experience was a little skewed because I used to hang out with reporters.  My best buddy was a motor sports editor and he hated it when the motocross came to town.  Everyone was bugging him about it and he covered Formula One auto racing for the most part.  He didn’t have a lot to do with the bikes.  So we’d sit in the bar across the street from the newspaper, get drunk and discuss.  I never did go see the motocross.  From what I surmised, the riders were cute and popular.  My editor friend wasn’t interested in any more competition for the ladies than he already had.

I don’t know what is going on with Motocross and Carlsbad these days.  I’ve been away for a long time.  Hm, but my editor friend is still there.  I’ll have to call him and bring it up.  You know, just to piss him off. It’ll remind him he’s alive. I do know that the minibike motocross is coming to town here!  I wonder if we can bet on it.  I’ll have to ask.
