Fremont St Honors Michael Jackson
June 28, 2009
I went to Fremont Street, Downtown Las Vegas, on Saturday night to see the Michael Jackson tribute they were doing. It is an overhead light show they put together to honor Michael Jackson, now that he’s dead.
The show lasts a couple of minutes and there isn’t a whole lot to it. They have Michael singing one of his songs while they show pictures of Michael. Most of the photos are album covers.
This Michael Jackson tribute runs right after the regularly scheduled light show on the canopy.
It is really quite a solemn couple of minutes. The crowd isn’t expecting it for the most part. They are waiting for the lights to come on and then it starts. Probably 2/3rds of the crowd doesn’t much care and continues to talk and start to party again, but a third is quiet and cheers at the end.
I know everyone is probably on MJ overload at this point and I wasn’t going to add another tribute to the guy. I thought those who are fans of Michael Jackson would want to see the light show they made for Fremont Street to honor him.
Regardless of how you feel about “whacko jacko” and what he has been rumored to have done, he really was the King of Pop. He contributed more to music and dance than anyone in my lifetime. I dare to say, he gave us more than even Elvis. Jackson changed music videos and was always the cutting edge of that art form. He was a spectacular dancer and a great singer. His music was always brilliant, fresh and new. He has influenced so many in rock and roll and we’re all a lot better off in music and dance because of him.
The Jackson family made a star of Michael when he was only four years old. I can’t help but think of the Southpark episode they did on that subject of making young people stars. It was actually about Brittney Spears, but it would have been much more fitting to have done it about Michael Jackson. The TV show explained how society needs a sacrifice so they create a famous person and then kill them in the end. This is how I’m left feeling about Michael Jackson. The kid never had a chance. In a sense he was a monster other people created and then he died.
I’m sure it will eventually come out of the autopsy that he too was taken by addiction to pain killers. We recently lost Danny Gans when the pain medication made his heart such a mess that it gave out. I expect the same news about Michael Jackson. And I expect prescribed narcotics will take some of my friends, and other stars. It is just the way it is now. It is too damn easy getting along by popping pills. In a way it is even expected that you take them.
Michael Jackson’s father lives in Las Vegas, but the pop star hasn’t played here since the 1970s. At that time he performed here with his brothers in the Jackson Five. There were some rumors a year or so ago about him opening a show here, but it never came about. He was even living here for a short time around that time.
On Fremont Street there was a guy walking around selling pictures of Michael Jackson. I suppose the feeding frenzy on his death has begun. A whole lot of people will try to make a profit from his name because they are too much of loser to do anything on their own. I’m sure the talk shows will start booking everyone who starts yelling, “I was molested by Michael Jackson.” I expect there will be a whole bunch of that coming up next as soon as they get their stories all put together for the big fifteen minutes of fame they are looking for.
Show business is a filthy business. It always has been, I guess.
