The Dancing Queen on Fremont Street
June 30, 2009
Going downtown, Las Vegas, last Saturday night was a bit of a last minute thing. I was hoping to catch up with some friends who were in town but I never connected with them. So, downtown it was. Man, I love downtown. Have I mentioned that before??
Last Saturday night there were a couple of tribute bands playing. I’m not much for tribute stuff. I would prefer to have the real thing, but hey, I’m cheap. These bands are playing for free. So I watch.
I had been spending a bit of time all week with a friend of mine who is from England. Unfortunate for me, both of the tribute bands were playing English guys. And well, they were not English. This means, they really need to fake the accent to keep in character. Lame, fake English accents get just a tad grating after a while. And when you’ve been listening to the real thing for days, well, it gets grating rather quickly.
The Beatles tribute band was singing Beatles stuff. They were pretty good. It sounded to me like one guy was going off key every now and then and I was suspicious of a guitar being out of key, but hey, I’m one fussy bitch. Nobody else seemed to have my little issues. I winced now and again but I had a good time just like everyone else.
The hit of the night was John Anthony and his Rod Stewart tribute.
That John Anthony is a bit of a sexy devil. I noticed most of the gay guys were gathering at his stage to watch and sing along. I don’t know if they are regular followers of the guy, but there seemed to be a lot of gay guys there that night. I felt very nonthreatened. You know how us girls love the gay guys.
I found it quite bizarre that there were more guys singing along to the Rod Stewart songs than there were women. I mean the straight guys! They know all the words to all the songs and were just singing along with Anthony. I guess there is something about Stewart and guys that I am not aware of. I thought it was really weird a few years ago when a guy called up my x-husband and was telling him to go to the Rod Stewart concert with him. Now, this is a macho plumber guy, not some sensitive type! My X wouldn’t go, so the guy kept calling us from the concert so we could here Stewart singing, much against our will.
What is with Rod Stewart and straight guys? If you are a guy and are into Rod Stewart’s love songs, let me know why. I don’t get it.
During one of the light shows I saw the crowd parting and someone dancing. People were beginning to gather around this dancer and so I started to pay attention. It was the cutest, young man just dancing his heart out. This kid must have come out of the closet about five minutes before he hit Fremont Street and wanted the whole world to know. He had his top tied up delightfully in the middle of his back, you know, to accent his best bottom feature. (I’d kill for that ass.) On top of his perfectly coiffed curls sat a pretty, pink hat. And he danced and danced.
Okay, here is another thing I don’t get. You know who he was dancing with? Macho Mexican guys who were about as legal as the Dancing Queen was straight. Is this a cultural thing I haven’t been told about? Do Mexican guys think they get good luck by dancing with some Fairy Princess or something? If it had been just one, I’d think the guy was just so drunk that he thought he was dancing with a girl, but he didn’t seem all that loaded. But there was a second guy, yeah, another Mexican national. He was so drunk the Dancing Queen had to hold him up to keep him upright. That didn’t last too long because the guy kept falling over, so the dancer gave up and headed to someone in a wheel chair.
Anyway, yep, I got some video of it. The first half of the video is the Dancing Queen with the first guy. The second half of the video is the band Psychedelic Ride, the band that plays on top of the painted up VW Bus on Fremont Street.
A couple of tourists got into the Dancing Queen portion of my video saying, “Only in Vegas!” I think I have to disagree with that statement. I can name two other cities where this sort of things goes on too. And really, you’d expect to see this in San Francisco, wouldn’t ya? But, I know what they mean. Anything can happen in Vegas. We’re pretty fun that way!
Man, I love this town!
