Freemont St Experience 2009

Freemont St Experience 2009

Ah, what a night it was on Fremont Street for New Year’s Eve 2009!  I don’t think I have ever, EVER had as much fun on a New Year’s Eve before.

I had been planning to spend the celebration at the Fremont Street Experience for several days.  Being afraid of the traffic I thought I’d just book a hotel and stay there at one of the hotels.  I’m just too cheap to pay $200 for a night in a room that usually goes for $49 a night or less.  This left me looking at the bus schedule. I finally figured it out with the help of someone who knows the bus system here.

On a bus I am just a stranger in a strange land.  I am almost completely clueless because I haven’t been on a bus in decades.  Everyone was friendly though and they got me to where I was going.  I hung with some girls in the front of the bus who were on their way home from work and they were really helpful.  Especially when they did a couple of shoots of their can of Lysol when the really fat guy in the wheelchair boarded.  It seems they expect to see him daily.

The bus driver tossed me off one block from the festivities and wished everyone a very happy New Year’s celebration.  It could not have been easier.  And the bus ride was free!  The city buses are still free up until 6pm tonight.

I zoomed through the line to get into the Fremont Street Experience because I am a local.  They were just sort of yelling to people, “Do you have ID??” and then they ushered you through.

I got there early because I was worried about the crowds, but really, I got there about 2 hours too early.  There were more cops around than people it seemed.  They were everywhere.  The first thing I saw them do was round up a really, really drunk woman with a cane who was falling down and rolling around.  It wasn’t even 6:30pm yet.

Around 8pm people began arriving in a big way.  It was like all of a sudden the place filled up with jovial partiers.  Everyone seemed so happy!  They were dancing and singing and carrying on.  The out of control drunks seemed a rare sight.  Most everyone was even saying, “Excuse me,” as they plowed through the masses of people. Everyone was best friends, high-fiving, bumping knuckles, dancing and just getting to know their neighbor – who was generally pressed up against them.

I met an awful lot of people.  What stands out most were the girls.  I had a lot of fun with the girls, haha.  I have never seen so many chicks who totally cracked me up.  The things they’d say while standing in the crowd were hysterical.  There are a couple of them in the Kiss tribute band video that I was having a great time with.  But where ever I went there was always someone starting a conversation with me and we whooped it up.

I didn’t see anyone I knew.  I did think I heard someone yelling, “PAAaaaam!”  But I hear people yelling that all the time.  Usually they are really yelling Jan, or Sam, or Kim, or just baying at the moon.  So I ignored it and pressed on through the masses of people.

A long line of cops, arm to arm, were making a line through the crowd in front of me in that last hour before midnight.  I wondered what was going on.  After about eight cops I saw our mayor, Oscar Goodman.  They were trying to get him to the stage.  I could have gotten about ten clean photos of him, but being the noob that I am, I realized I should have been taking photos after he was several feet away.  At that point it just wasn’t happening in a good way, haha.  But here is what I could get:

Oscar Goodman Presses thru the crowd

Oscar Goodman Presses thru the crowd

Shortly after Oscar’s passing by, I started to get a bit of a crowd panic.  I needed to get out of that mass of flesh.  There are people who can break a path in a sea of bodies so I hooked on to one of those lines.  The lead person is like one of those ice breaking boats, parting the way for the ship.  I just tagged along and eventually they got me out of there so I didn’t have a melt down.  I was surprised I started to panic because things were going great for me in the middle of the crowd up until then.  It was time to press on so I settled into a roomier area to do the countdown to midnight.

Also, given my superstitions and all, I didn’t want to get totally messed up for the year by being kissed by Mr. Wrong.  So off on the side of the action with being busy with my camera worked best for me.  I had been told earlier that everyone in the crowd starts kissing everyone else and it is just an orgy of fun.  It was better for me if I missed that part.

It was a blast for me though.  Being a romantic, I love seeing all the sweethearts dancing and kissing.  The video hit on a couple of songs that have some old special memories for me of people I have known at various points in my life.  All in all, it was a great night for me.

I will write more later, I have some more videos and lots of photos I’ll post a little later today.  There is lots to go through and much editing to be done.

I hope you have a wonderful year ahead.  I know I have started my year off right and I think this year will be even better than the last.  May all your new year’s dreams come true.

NYE at Fremont was hella fun! I was there, didn’t get to see the KISS tribute band, but did see them on THE Experience show, and that was bad ass! There is a Derby game in old Town as well. I dont recall what hotel as I was a bit tipsy on New Years, but my eyes grew big and my heart stopped when i saw it!!
