Welcome to Las Vegas Sign Defaced

After the Las Vegas Sign was repaired

After the Las Vegas Sign was repaired

The Las Vegas Sign was defaced last night.  It appears a group of people used a red marker to write their initials all over it.  Not cool.  I went over to take a look.

Construction on Tropicana

Construction on Tropicana heading toward strip

I live on the opposite end of the strip, but my office is on the side of the city where the sign is.  I took Maryland to Tropicana and then realized I had made a big mistake.  I don’t read my own stuff… I forgot about the construction on Tropicana.  Damn.  I was in the middle of a traffic jam.

On the bright side, it gave me an opportunity to take a couple of photos for those who miss Las Vegas.  I posted a couple on Twitter for those who follow me and wish they were in Las Vegas right now but cannot be.

There was almost an accident at one intersection because some people just are too important to wait their damn turn through the light.  There was a lot of horn honking but I didn’t hear any crunching noises.  Too bad, because I’m sure somebody deserved it.

I got into the sign parking lot fairly easily, which was nice.  A lot of times I’ve seen that little parking lot full, but there were a couple of spaces open yet. A tour bus was just emptying out its passengers so they could get a group shot in front of our ruined sign.

Extreme Amy from Fox 5 morning news team

Extreme Amy from Fox 5 morning news team

Extreme Amy from the Fox 5 morning news was there on the scene talking with people on air.  She wasn’t so extreme this morning as she was reporting on our city tragedy.  (She’d be the type to climb the sign and wave at people passing by.)  Some turd messed up our sign!  It is our icon!  It is our history! How could someone do that?

This wasn’t gang graffiti like you see everywhere else.  This was initials.  It is the graffiti you used to see in less violent days, like back in the 1960s in any town everywhere.  I’m assuming it was drunk tourists on vacation from some white trash area in another state.  A state who was happy to see them go for a while.  Instead of peeing from the top of the MGM sign for youtube, they were destroying the sign that represents Fabulous Las Vegas.  And as bright as they were, they left their initials to give a hint to their identity.

Our mayor was quoted as saying, “Off with their heads!”.  The on air personalities who are reporting this are quick to follow up that he is kidding.  Our mayor used to be a mob lawyer.  Do you think he’s kidding?  I don’t think he’s kidding.  He’s pissed, as we all are.  Of course, city officials would never allow him to chop off the heads of the guilty, but it is a nice thought.  It is nice to have a mayor that has zero use for political correctness.

People are saying they will just photoshop it out

This is a pretty big deal here today.  They are talking about it on TV, they are talking about it on the radio.  A team of sign people have already been dispatched to clean the thing up.  They did a pretty good job getting most of it off of there, but you can still see some remains of the initials on the face of the sign.  From what I understand, they don’t want to put paint on the sign and they are trying to come up with a good way to get it all off of there.

I don’t know if they will ever find the culprits.  When you think about it, people are there taking photos and videos all day and all night.  Surely they are on someone’s camera getting ready to do it, doing it, or already having done it.  With any luck, justice will be served.  I wouldn’t want to be them.

If you have any information about this crime, you can call the graffiti hot line 702-455-4509.

New York New York Casino area

I leave you with a happier photo.  This is New York New York and the rest of the corner of Tropicana and the Strip.
