Giant Step towards Legalizing U.S. Online Gambling

Giant Step towards Legalizing U.S. Online Gambling

Thursday, Feb 5, 2009 | By CasinoGuide

With the inauguration of the new president the United States will face a fresh and more liberal regime. "Change will come" the immensely popular Democrat promised, and luckily this also applies to the US gambling legislation.

As early as in the end of October 2008 we informed you that there was every reason to believe the stringent gambling legislation would become a thing of the past under the new democrat administration.

Pioneer UIGEA-Critic
Barney Frank, the chairman of the House financial service committee, and fierce and well-spoken opponent of the UIGEA, said to the Financial Times that he will put forth a bill in order to set up a framework for regulating and licensing online gambling operations.

Barney Frank mentioned that the anti-gambling legislation, that was put through in the dying days of the Bush administration, is part of the regulations that are up for discharge if supported by enough Congress votes.

Online Gambling Raid
In 2006, during the Bush administration, the UIGEA was forced upon the American citizens. As the legislation became more stringent online gambling and gaming operators faced legal charges, with some of the CEOs even getting arrested and brought to court.

Mr Frank comments to this: "I expect an Obama Department of Justice to be less zealous about locking people up. These outrageous arrests in transit - they should be stopping that stuff."

Fair, Open and Responsible
The last restricting pieces of the UIGEA regulations where finalized by the Bush administration just days before Obama was to be inaugurated. However, these measures need not to be implemented until December of this year. In the mean time we hope, and we expect, the Obama administration has created a fair, open and responsible online gambling climate.
